Intercessione di Amos in favore d’Israele
7 (A)Il Signore, Dio, mi fece vedere questo: egli formava delle locuste al primo spuntare dell’erba tenera, quella che spunta dopo la falciatura per il re.
2 Quando esse ebbero finito di divorare l’erba della terra, io dissi: «Signore, Dio, perdona! Come potrà sopravvivere Giacobbe, piccolo com’è?»
3 Il Signore si pentì di questo. «Ciò non accadrà», disse il Signore.
4 Il Signore, Dio, mi fece vedere questo: il Signore, Dio, annunciava di voler difendere la sua causa mediante il fuoco: il fuoco divorò il grande abisso e divorò la campagna.
5 Allora io dissi: «Signore, Dio, fèrmati! Come potrà sopravvivere Giacobbe, piccolo com’è?»
6 Il Signore si pentì di questo. «Neppure ciò accadrà», disse il Signore, Dio.
7 Egli mi fece vedere questo: il Signore stava sopra un muro e aveva in mano un filo a piombo.
8 Il Signore mi disse: «Amos, che cosa vedi?» Io risposi: «Un filo a piombo». E il Signore disse: «Ecco, io metto il filo a piombo in mezzo al mio popolo, Israele; io non lo risparmierò più;
9 saranno devastati gli alti luoghi d’Isacco, i santuari d’Israele saranno distrutti, e io mi leverò con la spada contro la casa di Geroboamo».
Amos e il sacerdote Amasia
10 (B)Allora Amasia, sacerdote di Betel, mandò a dire a Geroboamo, re d’Israele: «Amos congiura contro di te in mezzo alla casa d’Israele; il paese non può sopportare tutte le sue parole. 11 Amos, infatti, ha detto: “Geroboamo morirà di spada e Israele sarà condotto in esilio lontano dal suo paese”». 12 Poi Amasia disse ad Amos: «Veggente, vattene, fuggi nel paese di Giuda; mangia il tuo pane laggiù e là profetizza; 13 ma a Betel non profetizzare più, perché è santuario del re e residenza reale».
14 Allora Amos rispose: «Io non sono profeta, né figlio di profeta; sono un mandriano e coltivo i sicomori. 15 Il Signore mi prese mentre ero dietro al gregge e mi disse: “Va’, profetizza al mio popolo, a Israele”.
16 Ora ascolta la parola del Signore. Tu dici: “Non profetizzare contro Israele e non predicare contro la casa d’Isacco!” 17 Ebbene, così dice il Signore: “Tua moglie si prostituirà nella città, i tuoi figli e le tue figlie saranno uccisi con la spada, il tuo paese sarà spartito con la cordicella, tu stesso morirai su terra impura e Israele sarà certamente condotto in esilio, lontano dal suo paese”».

To Die Homeless and Friendless
7 1-2 God, my Master, showed me this vision: He was preparing a locust swarm. The first cutting, which went to the king, was complete, and the second crop was just sprouting. The locusts ate everything green. Not even a blade of grass was left.
I called out, “God, my Master! Excuse me, but what’s going to come of Jacob? He’s so small.”
3 God gave in.
“It won’t happen,” he said.

4 God showed me this vision: Oh! God, my Master God was calling up a firestorm. It burned up the ocean. Then it burned up the Promised Land.
5 I said, “God, my Master! Hold it—please! What’s going to come of Jacob? He’s so small.”
6 God gave in.
“All right, this won’t happen either,” God, my Master, said.

7 God showed me this vision: My Master was standing beside a wall. In his hand he held a plumb line.
8-9 God said to me, “What do you see, Amos?”
I said, “A plumb line.”
Then my Master said, “Look what I’ve done. I’ve hung a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel. I’ve spared them for the last time. This is it!
“Isaac’s sex-and-religion shrines will be smashed,
Israel’s unholy shrines will be knocked to pieces.
I’m raising my sword against the royal family of Jeroboam.”
10 Amaziah, priest at the shrine at Bethel, sent a message to Jeroboam, king of Israel:
“Amos is plotting to get rid of you; and he’s doing it as an insider, working from within Israel. His talk will destroy the country. He’s got to be silenced. Do you know what Amos is saying?
11 ‘Jeroboam will be killed.
Israel is headed for exile.’”
12-13 Then Amaziah confronted Amos: “Seer, be on your way! Get out of here and go back to Judah where you came from! Hang out there. Do your preaching there. But no more preaching at Bethel! Don’t show your face here again. This is the king’s chapel. This is a royal shrine.”
14-15 But Amos stood up to Amaziah: “I never set up to be a preacher, never had plans to be a preacher. I raised cattle and I pruned trees. Then God took me off the farm and said, ‘Go preach to my people Israel.’
16-17 “So listen to God’s Word. You tell me, ‘Don’t preach to Israel. Don’t say anything against the family of Isaac.’ But here’s what God is telling you:
Your wife will become a whore in town.
Your children will get killed.
Your land will be auctioned off.
You will die homeless and friendless.
And Israel will be hauled off to exile, far from home.”

Locusts, Fire and a Plumb Line
7 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me:(A) He was preparing swarms of locusts(B) after the king’s share had been harvested and just as the late crops were coming up. 2 When they had stripped the land clean,(C) I cried out, “Sovereign Lord, forgive! How can Jacob survive?(D) He is so small!(E)”
3 So the Lord relented.(F)
“This will not happen,” the Lord said.(G)
4 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me: The Sovereign Lord was calling for judgment by fire;(H) it dried up the great deep and devoured(I) the land. 5 Then I cried out, “Sovereign Lord, I beg you, stop! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!(J)”
6 So the Lord relented.(K)
“This will not happen either,” the Sovereign Lord said.(L)
7 This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb,[a] with a plumb line[b] in his hand. 8 And the Lord asked me, “What do you see,(M) Amos?(N)”
“A plumb line,(O)” I replied.
Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.(P)
9 “The high places(Q) of Isaac will be destroyed
and the sanctuaries(R) of Israel will be ruined;
with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.(S)”
Amos and Amaziah
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel(T) sent a message to Jeroboam(U) king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy(V) against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words.(W) 11 For this is what Amos is saying:
“‘Jeroboam will die by the sword,
and Israel will surely go into exile,(X)
away from their native land.’”(Y)
12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer!(Z) Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.(AA) 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel,(AB) because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple(AC) of the kingdom.(AD)”
14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet(AE) nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees.(AF) 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock(AG) and said to me, ‘Go,(AH) prophesy(AI) to my people Israel.’(AJ) 16 Now then, hear(AK) the word of the Lord. You say,
“‘Do not prophesy against(AL) Israel,
and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.’
17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says:
