III. LE VISIONI
Prima visione: le cavallette
7 Ecco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore Dio: egli formava uno sciame di cavallette quando cominciava a germogliare la seconda erba, quella che spunta dopo la falciatura del re. 2 Quando quelle stavano per finire di divorare l'erba della regione, io dissi: «Signore Dio, perdona, come potrà resistere Giacobbe? E' tanto piccolo». 3 Il Signore si impietosì: «Questo non avverrà», disse il Signore.
Seconda visione: la siccità
4 Ecco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore Dio: il Signore Dio chiamava per il castigo il fuoco che consumava il grande abisso e divorava la campagna. 5 Io dissi: «Signore Dio, desisti! Come potrà resistere Giacobbe? E' tanto piccolo». 6 Il Signore se ne pentì: «Neanche questo avverrà», disse il Signore.
Terza visione: il piombino
7 Ecco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore Dio: il Signore stava sopra un muro tirato a piombo e con un piombino in mano. 8 Il Signore mi disse: «Che cosa vedi, Amos?». Io risposi: «Un piombino». Il Signore mi disse: «Io pongo un piombino in mezzo al mio popolo, Israele; non gli perdonerò più. 9 Saranno demolite le alture d'Isacco e i santuari d'Israele saranno ridotti in rovine, quando io mi leverò con la spada contro la casa di Geroboàmo».
Conflitto con Amasia. Amos espulso da Betel
10 Amasia, sacerdote di Betel, mandò a dire a Geroboàmo re di Israele: «Amos congiura contro di te in mezzo alla casa di Israele; il paese non può sopportare le sue parole, 11 poiché così dice Amos: Di spada morirà Geroboàmo e Israele sarà condotto in esilio lontano dal suo paese». 12 Amasia disse ad Amos: «Vattene, veggente, ritirati verso il paese di Giuda; là mangerai il tuo pane e là potrai profetizzare, 13 ma a Betel non profetizzare più, perché questo è il santuario del re ed è il tempio del regno». 14 Amos rispose ad Amasia:
«Non ero profeta, né figlio di profeta;
ero un pastore e raccoglitore di sicomori;
15 Il Signore mi prese
di dietro al bestiame e il Signore mi disse:
Và, profetizza al mio popolo Israele.
16 Ora ascolta la parola del Signore: Tu dici: Non profetizzare contro Israele, né predicare contro la casa di Isacco. 17 Ebbene, dice il Signore: Tua moglie si prostituirà nella città, i tuoi figli e le tue figlie cadranno di spada, la tua terra sarà spartita con la corda, tu morirai in terra immonda e Israele sarà deportato in esilio lontano dalla sua terra».

7 Ecco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore, l'Eterno: egli formava cavallette, quando iniziava a crescere la seconda erba; ed ecco, la seconda erba veniva dopo la falciatura del re.
2 Quando esse ebbero finito di divorare l'erba della terra io dissi: «Signore, Eterno deh perdona. Come potrebbe durare Giacobbe, dato che è piccolo?».
3 L'Eterno si pentí di questo: «Ciò non avverrà», disse l'Eterno.
4 Ecco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore, l'Eterno: il Signore, l'Eterno, proclamava di voler difendere la sua causa col fuoco; e il fuoco divorò il grande abisso e divorò una parte del paese.
5 Allora io dissi: «Signore, Eterno, deh, cessa. Come potrebbe durare Giacobbe, dato che è piccolo?».
6 L'Eterno si pentí di questo: «Neppure questo avverrà», disse il Signore, l'Eterno.
7 Ecco ciò che egli mi fece vedere: il Signore stava ritto sopra un muro a piombo e con un filo a piombo in mano.
8 L'Eterno mi disse: «Amos, che cosa vedi?». Io risposi: «Un filo a piombo». Allora il Signore disse: «Ecco, io pongo un filo a piombo in mezzo al mio popolo Israele; non lo risparmierò piú a lungo.
9 Gli alti luoghi d'Isacco saranno devastati e i santuari d'Israele saranno distrutti; io mi leverò con la spada contro la casa di Geroboamo».
10 Allora Amatsiah, sacerdote di Bethel mandò a dire a Geroboamo re d'Israele: «Amos congiura contro di te in mezzo alla casa d'Israele; il paese non è in grado di sopportare tutte le sue parole.
11 Amos infatti ha detto cosí: Geroboamo morirà di spada e Israele sarà certamente deportato lontano dal suo paese.
12 Amatsiah disse ad Amos: «Veggente, va scappatene nel paese di Giuda; là mangerai pane e là profetizzerai;
13 ma non profetizzare piú a Bethel, perché è il santuario del re e la residenza reale».
14 Allora Amos rispose e disse ad Amatsiah: «Io non ero profeta né figlio di profeti, ma ero un mandriano e coltivavo i sicomori.
15 L'Eterno mi prese da dietro al gregge, e l'Eterno mi disse: "Va' profetizza al mio popolo d'Israele
16 Ora perciò ascolta la parola dell'Eterno: Tu dici: "Non profetizzare contro Israele e smettila di parlare contro la casa di Isacco"
17 Perciò cosí parla l'Eterno: "Tua moglie si prostituirà nella città, i tuoi figli e le tue figlie cadranno di spada e il tuo paese sarà spartito con la corda; tu morirai su terra impura e Israele sarà certamente deportato lontano dal suo paese"».

Locusts, Fire and a Plumb Line
7 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me:(A) He was preparing swarms of locusts(B) after the king’s share had been harvested and just as the late crops were coming up. 2 When they had stripped the land clean,(C) I cried out, “Sovereign Lord, forgive! How can Jacob survive?(D) He is so small!(E)”
3 So the Lord relented.(F)
“This will not happen,” the Lord said.(G)
4 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me: The Sovereign Lord was calling for judgment by fire;(H) it dried up the great deep and devoured(I) the land. 5 Then I cried out, “Sovereign Lord, I beg you, stop! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!(J)”
6 So the Lord relented.(K)
“This will not happen either,” the Sovereign Lord said.(L)
7 This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb,[a] with a plumb line[b] in his hand. 8 And the Lord asked me, “What do you see,(M) Amos?(N)”
“A plumb line,(O)” I replied.
Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.(P)
9 “The high places(Q) of Isaac will be destroyed
and the sanctuaries(R) of Israel will be ruined;
with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.(S)”
Amos and Amaziah
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel(T) sent a message to Jeroboam(U) king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy(V) against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words.(W) 11 For this is what Amos is saying:
“‘Jeroboam will die by the sword,
and Israel will surely go into exile,(X)
away from their native land.’”(Y)
12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer!(Z) Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.(AA) 13 Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel,(AB) because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple(AC) of the kingdom.(AD)”
14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet(AE) nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees.(AF) 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock(AG) and said to me, ‘Go,(AH) prophesy(AI) to my people Israel.’(AJ) 16 Now then, hear(AK) the word of the Lord. You say,
“‘Do not prophesy against(AL) Israel,
and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.’
17 “Therefore this is what the Lord says:

7 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.
2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
3 The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord.
4 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
5 Then said I, O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
6 The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God.
7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
8 And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court.
14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
15 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.
16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
