⁶ So the Lord relented.^(A)

“This will not happen either,” the Sovereign Lord said.^(B)

² He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew^(A) that you are a gracious^(B) and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love,^(C) a God who relents^(D) from sending calamity.^(E)

¹⁰ When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented^(A) and did not bring on them the destruction^(B) he had threatened.^(C)

³ So the Lord relented.^(A)

“This will not happen,” the Lord said.^(B)

¹⁹ “Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone else in Judah put him to death? Did not Hezekiah^(A) fear the Lord and seek^(B) his favor? And did not the Lord relent,^(C) so that he did not bring the disaster^(D) he pronounced against them? We are about to bring a terrible disaster^(E) on ourselves!”

¹⁶ Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord.^(A) And he could bear Israel’s misery^(B) no longer.^(C)

¹⁸ Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved^(A) them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented^(B) because of their groaning^(C) under those who oppressed and afflicted^(D) them.
