The Lord decided not to do this.[a] “It will not happen,” the Lord said.

  1. Amos 7:3 tn Or “changed his mind about this.”
  2. Amos 7:4 tn Heb “behold” or “look.”
  3. Amos 7:4 tc The Hebrew appears to read, “summoning to contend with fire,” or “summoning fire to contend,” but both are problematic syntactically (H. W. Wolff, Joel and Amos [Hermeneia], 292; S. M. Paul, Amos [Hermeneia], 230-31). Many emend the text to לרבב אשׁ, “(calling) for a shower of fire,” though this interpretation is also problematic (see F. I. Andersen and D. N. Freedman, Amos [AB], 746-47).
  4. Amos 7:5 tn Heb “stand.”
  5. Amos 7:5 tn Heb “small.”

So (A)the Lord relented concerning this.
“It shall not be,” said the Lord.

(B)Oh, that Jacob may stand,
For he is small!”

A Vision of Fire

I had another vision from the Sovereign Lord. In it I saw him preparing to punish his people with fire. The fire burned up the great ocean under the earth and started to burn up the land. Then I said, “Stop, O Sovereign Lord! How can your people survive? They are so small and weak!”
