¹² And Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there,

³⁴ Then the whole town came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him they begged him to leave their region.

⁹ (Formerly in Israel, anyone who went to inquire of God would say, “Come, let us go to the seer,” for the one who is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer.)^(A)

² to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight,^[a] not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it,^[b] not for sordid gain but eagerly.^(A)

¹⁴ Those who are unspiritual^[a] do not receive the gifts of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.^(A)

¹⁸ For such people do not serve our Lord Christ but their own appetites,^[a] and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded.^(A)

³⁹ so they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and asked them to leave the city.^(A)

The Lament over Jerusalem

³¹ At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”

³⁷ Then the whole throng of people of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes^[a] asked Jesus^[b] to leave them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned.^{(A) 38} The man from whom the demons had gone out begged that he might be with him, but Jesus^[c] sent him away, saying,

¹⁰ Oh, that someone among you would shut the temple^[a] doors, so that you would not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hands.^(A)
