Amaziah’s Complaint

¹⁰ Then Amaziah the ^(A)priest of ^(B)Bethel sent to ^(C)Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to ^[a]bear all his words.

⁴ Therefore the princes said to the king, “Please, ^(A)let this man be put to death, for thus he ^[a]weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the ^[b]welfare of this people, but their harm.”

³¹ He made ^[a]shrines on the high places, ^(A)and made priests from every class of people, who were not of the sons of Levi.

³² Jeroboam ^[b]ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like ^(B)the feast that was in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did at Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made. ^(C)And at Bethel he installed the priests of the high places which he had made.

⁸ Now it happened, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, “You will surely die! ⁹ Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be ^(A)desolate, without an inhabitant’?” And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

¹⁰ When the princes of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the Lord and sat down in the entry of the New Gate of the Lord’s house. ¹¹ And the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and all the people, saying, ^[a]“This man deserves to ^(B)die! For he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your ears.”

Jesus’ Authority Questioned^(A)

^23 (B)Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and ^(C)said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?”

^33 (A)After this event Jeroboam did not turn from his evil way, but again he made priests from every class of people for the high places; whoever wished, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

^5 (A)For we have found this man a plague, a creator of dissension among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.
