Woe to Those at Ease in Zion
6 (A)“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion,
and to those who feel secure on (B)the mountain of Samaria,
(C)the notable men of (D)the first of the nations,
to whom the house of Israel comes!
2 Pass over to (E)Calneh, and see,
and from there go to (F)Hamath the great;
then go down to (G)Gath of the Philistines.
(H)Are you better than these kingdoms?
Or is their territory greater than your territory,
3 (I)O you who put far away the day of disaster
(J)and bring near the seat of violence?
4 “Woe to those (K)who lie on (L)beds of ivory
(M)and stretch themselves out on their couches,
and eat lambs from the flock
(N)and calves from the midst of the stall,
5 (O)who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp
and like David (P)invent for themselves instruments of music,
6 (Q)who drink wine in bowls
and (R)anoint themselves with the finest oils,
but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!
7 (S)Therefore they shall now be the first of those who go into exile,
and the revelry of those who stretch themselves out shall pass away.”
8 (T)The Lord God has sworn by himself, declares the Lord, the God of hosts:
“I abhor (U)the pride of Jacob
and hate his strongholds,
(V)and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.”
9 And (W)if ten men remain in one house, they shall die. 10 And when one's relative, (X)the one who anoints him for burial, shall take him up to bring the bones out of the house, and shall say to him who is in the innermost parts of the house, “Is there still anyone with you?” he shall say, “No”; and he shall say, (Y)“Silence! We must not mention the name of the Lord.”
11 For behold, the Lord commands,
and (Z)the great house shall be struck down into fragments,
and the little house into bits.
12 Do horses run on rocks?
Does one plow there[a] with oxen?
(AA)But you have turned justice into (AB)poison
(AC)and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood[b]—
13 you who rejoice in Lo-debar,[c]
who say, (AD)“Have we not by our own strength
captured Karnaim[d] for ourselves?”
14 “For behold, (AE)I will raise up against you a nation,
O house of Israel,” declares the Lord, the God of hosts;
“and they shall oppress you from (AF)Lebo-hamath
to the Brook of (AG)the Arabah.”

“Those at Ease in Zion”
6 Woe (judgment is coming) to those who are at ease and carefree in Zion (Judah)
And to those on the mountain of Samaria who feel secure,
The distinguished men of the foremost of nations,
To whom the house of Israel comes.(A)

Go over to Calneh [in Babylonia] and look,
And from there go [north of Damascus] to the great city of Hamath;
Then go down to Gath of the Philistines.
Are they better than these kingdoms [of yours],
Or is their territory greater than yours?
3
Do you put off the day of punishment,
Yet cause the seat of violence to come near?
4
Those who lie on [luxurious] beds of ivory
And lounge around out on their couches,
And eat lambs from the flock
And calves from the midst of the stall,
5
Who improvise to the sound of the harp—
Like David they have composed songs for themselves—(B)
6
Who drink wine from sacrificial bowls
And anoint themselves with the finest oils [reflecting their unrestrained celebration];
Yet they are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph (Israel).(C)
7
Therefore, they will now go into exile with the first of the captives,
And the cultic revelry and banqueting of those who lounge around [on their luxurious couches] will pass away.
8
The Lord [a]God has sworn [an oath] by Himself—the Lord God of hosts, says:
“I loathe and reject the [self-centered] arrogance of Jacob (Israel),
And I hate his palaces and citadels;
Therefore, I shall hand over the [idolatrous] city [of Samaria] with all that it contains [to the Assyrian invaders].”
9 And it shall come to pass that if there remain ten men in one house, they shall die [by the pestilence that comes with war]. 10 Then one’s uncle, or his undertaker, shall come to bring the [disease-infected] body out of the house, [to cremate it], and he will say to another in the farthest part of the house, “Is there anyone else with you?” And that one will say, “No one.” Then he will respond, “Hush! Keep quiet! For the name of the Lord is not to be mentioned [even casually, for fear that we might invoke even more punishment].”(D) 11 For behold, the Lord is going to command that the great house be smashed to pieces and the small house to fragments.

Do horses run on rocks?
Do men plow rocks with oxen? [Of course not!]
Yet you have turned justice into poison
And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood (bitterness),
13
You who [self-confidently] rejoice in [b]Lo-debar (Nothing),
Who say, “Have we not by our own strength taken [c]Karnaim (Strength) for ourselves?”
14
“For behold, I am going to stir up a nation against you,
O house of Israel,” says the Lord, the God of hosts,
“And they will afflict and torment you [to the entire limits of Israel] from the entrance of Hamath [in the north]
To the brook of the Arabah [in the south].”

- Amos 6:13 Lit a thing of nothing. Lo-debar and Karnaim apparently were Aramean sites that had been captured by Israel. Amos uses the meanings of these names in a play on words to rebuke Israel.
- Amos 6:13 Lit a pair of horns. The horns of animals were regarded as symbols of power. Amos condemns Israel for claiming that their victories were achieved without God’s help.

6 Ai dos que têm uma vida boa em Jerusalém! Ai de vocês que vivem sossegados em Samaria, vocês que são as autoridades desse grande país de Israel, vocês a quem o povo vai pedir ajuda! 2 Vocês dizem ao povo: “Vão olhar a cidade de Calné, e depois vão até a grande cidade de Hamate, e dali cheguem até a cidade de Gate, na terra dos filisteus. Por acaso, aqueles povos são mais ricos do que nós ou os seus países maiores do que o nosso?” 3 Vocês não querem acreditar que o dia do castigo esteja perto, mas o que vocês estão fazendo vai apressar a chegada de um tempo de violência. 4 Ai de vocês que gostam de banquetes, em que se deitam em sofás luxuosos e comem carne de ovelhas e de bezerros gordos! 5 Vocês fazem músicas como fez o rei Davi e gostam de cantá-las com acompanhamento de harpas. 6 Bebem vinho em taças enormes, usam os perfumes mais caros, mas não se importam com a desgraça do país. 7 Portanto, vocês serão os primeiros a serem levados como prisioneiros para fora do país, e não haverá mais banquetes alegres.
8 O Senhor, o Todo-Poderoso, jurou assim:
— Eu vou entregar a cidade de Samaria nas mãos do inimigo, que levará embora tudo o que encontrar. Pois eu odeio o orgulho do povo de Israel, detesto os seus palácios.
9 E vai acontecer que, se houver dez pessoas numa casa, todas morrerão. 10 E, quando alguém chegar para tirar da casa o corpo do seu parente e queimá-lo, perguntará a quem ainda estiver vivo lá dentro: “Tem mais gente aí?” O outro responderá: “Não tem, não.” Então o primeiro dirá: “Cale a boca! Não devemos nem dizer o nome do Senhor!” 11 Pois o Senhor vai dar uma ordem, e todas as casas, as grandes e as pequenas, serão destruídas.
12 Por acaso, podem os cavalos galopar sobre as rochas? Ou será que os bois podem puxar o arado no mar? Claro que não! Mas vocês fazem a honestidade virar veneno e a justiça virar injustiça. 13 Vocês se orgulham de terem derrotado a cidade de Lo-Debar e se gabam, dizendo: “Pela nossa própria força conquistamos Carnaim.”
14 O Senhor, o Deus Todo-Poderoso, diz:
— Povo de Israel, vou mandar uma nação invadir o seu país, e todos vocês serão perseguidos desde a subida de Hamate, no Norte, até o riacho Arabá, no Sul.
