6 Malheur à vous ╵qui vivez bien tranquilles dans Sion,
et vous qui vous croyez ╵bien en sécurité ╵sur la montagne ╵de Samarie !
Oui, vous les grands ╵de la première des nations,
vous tous vers qui accourt ╵la communauté d’Israël !
2 Rendez-vous à Kalné[a], ╵pour voir ce qui s’y est passé.
Puis, de là, rendez-vous ╵à Hamath, la grande cité[b].
Puis descendez à Gath[c], ╵la ville philistine.
Constatez si ces villes ╵sont en meilleur état ╵que ces royaumes-ci
ou si leur territoire ╵est plus grand que le vôtre.
3 Or le jour du malheur, ╵vous pensez l’éloigner,
mais vous vous attirez ╵un règne de violence.
4 Vous voilà allongés ╵sur des lits incrustés d’ivoire,
vous vous vautrez ╵sur des divans.
Vous mangez des béliers ╵choisis dans le troupeau,
des veaux de premier choix ╵pris dans l’étable.
5 Vous qui chantez ╵au son du luth,
qui composez comme David ╵pour vos instruments de musique[d],
6 vous buvez votre vin ╵à pleines coupes
et vous oignez vos têtes ╵de parfums raffinés.
Mais la destruction qui menace ╵tout le royaume de Joseph ╵ne vous affecte pas.
7 C’est pourquoi vous irez en tête ╵des déportés,
et c’en sera fini ╵des banquets des fêtards ╵vautrés sur leurs divans.
Samarie sera détruite
8 Le Seigneur, l’Eternel, ╵l’a juré par lui-même
– c’est là ce que déclare l’Eternel, ╵Dieu des armées célestes :
J’ai en horreur ╵ce qui fait l’orgueil de Jacob
et je hais ses palais,
je livrerai la ville ╵et ce qu’elle contient.
9 Si, dans une maison, il subsiste dix hommes, eh bien, ils périront. 10 Quand le parent d’un défunt emportera de la maison le mort pour le brûler, il demandera à celui qui se trouve au fond du logis : Quelqu’un d’autre est-il encore avec toi ?
Celui-ci répondra : Il n’y a plus personne.
Et l’on dira : Silence ! Car il n’y a pas lieu d’invoquer l’Eternel.
11 L’Eternel va donner des ordres :
les grandes maisons, il les frappera ╵pour en faire un tas de gravats,
puis les petites, ╵pour y ouvrir des brèches.
12 A-t-on vu des chevaux ╵galoper sur le roc ?
Laboure-t-on la mer[e] avec des bœufs ?
Mais vous, vous changez le droit en poison,
le fruit de la justice ╵en de l’absinthe amère.
13 Vous vous réjouissez ╵d’avoir pris Lo-Debar,
vous dites : N’est-ce pas ╵grâce à notre puissance
que nous avons pris Qarnaïm[f] ?
14 Voici ce que déclare ╵l’Eternel, le Dieu des armées célestes :
O communauté d’Israël, ╵je vais susciter contre vous
une nation qui vous opprimera ╵depuis Lebo-Hamath
et jusqu’au torrent de la Araba[g].

Woe to the Complacent
6 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion(A)
and to those who feel secure on the hill of Samaria—
the notable people in this first of the nations,
those the house of Israel comes to.
2 Cross over to Calneh(B) and see;
go from there to great Hamath;(C)
then go down to Gath(D) of the Philistines.
Are you better than these kingdoms?
Is their territory larger than yours?
3 You dismiss any thought of the evil day(E)
and bring in a reign of violence.(F)
4 They lie on beds inlaid with ivory,(G)
sprawled out on their couches,(H)
and dine on lambs from the flock(I)
and calves from the stall.
5 They improvise songs[a] to the sound of the harp(J)
and invent[b] their own musical instruments like David.(K)
6 They drink wine by the bowlful(L)
and anoint themselves with the finest oils
but do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.(M)
7 Therefore, they will now go into exile
as the first of the captives,(N)
and the feasting(O) of those who sprawl out
will come to an end.
Israel’s Pride Judged
8 The Lord God has sworn by Himself(P)—this is the declaration of Yahweh, the God of Hosts:
I loathe Jacob’s pride(Q)
and hate his citadels,(R)
so I will hand over the city(S) and everything in it.
9 And if there are 10 men left in one house, they will die.(T) 10 A close relative[c] and burner[d](U) will remove his corpse[e] from the house. He will call to someone in the inner recesses of the house, “Any more with you?”
That person will reply, “None.”
Then he will say, “Silence, because Yahweh’s name must not be invoked.”(V)
11 For the Lord commands:
The large house will be smashed to pieces,
and the small house to rubble.(W)
12 Do horses gallop on the cliffs;
does anyone plow there with oxen?[f]
Yet you have turned justice into poison(X)
and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood(Y)—
13 you who rejoice over Lo-debar(Z)
and say, “Didn’t we capture Karnaim
for ourselves by our own strength?”(AA)
14 But look, I am raising up a nation
against you, house of Israel(AB)—
this is the declaration of the Lord,
the God of Hosts—
and they will oppress you
from the entrance of Hamath[g](AC)
to the Brook of the Arabah.[h]

Warnings to Zion and Samaria
6 Woe (A)to you who are at (B)ease in Zion,
And (C)trust in Mount Samaria,
Notable persons in the (D)chief nation,
To whom the house of Israel comes!
2 (E)Go over to (F)Calneh and see;
And from there go to (G)Hamath the great;
Then go down to Gath of the Philistines.
(H)Are you better than these kingdoms?
Or is their territory greater than your territory?
3 Woe to you who (I)put far off the day of (J)doom,
(K)Who cause (L)the seat of violence to come near;
4 Who lie on beds of ivory,
Stretch out on your couches,
Eat lambs from the flock
And calves from the midst of the stall;
5 (M)Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments,
And invent for yourselves (N)musical instruments (O)like David;
6 Who (P)drink wine from bowls,
And anoint yourselves with the best ointments,
(Q)But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
7 Therefore they shall now go (R)captive as the first of the captives,
And those who recline at banquets shall be removed.
8 (S)The Lord God has sworn by Himself,
The Lord God of hosts says:
“I abhor (T)the pride of Jacob,
And hate his palaces;
Therefore I will deliver up the city
And all that is in it.”
9 Then it shall come to pass, that if ten men remain in one house, they shall die. 10 And when [a]a relative of the dead, with one who will burn the bodies, picks up the [b]bodies to take them out of the house, he will say to one inside the house, “Are there any more with you?”
Then someone will say, “None.”
And he will say, (U)“Hold your tongue! (V)For we dare not mention the name of the Lord.”
11 For behold, (W)the Lord gives a command:
(X)He will break the great house into bits,
And the little house into pieces.
12 Do horses run on rocks?
Does one plow there with oxen?
Yet (Y)you have turned justice into gall,
And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,
13 You who rejoice over [c]Lo Debar,
Who say, “Have we not taken [d]Karnaim for ourselves
By our own strength?”
