Holman Christian Standard Bible

Woe to the Complacent

6 Woe to those who are at ease in Zion(A)
and to those who feel secure on the hill of Samaria—
the notable people in this first of the nations,
those the house of Israel comes to.
2 Cross over to Calneh(B) and see;
go from there to great Hamath;(C)
then go down to Gath(D) of the Philistines.
Are you better than these kingdoms?
Is their territory larger than yours?
3 You dismiss any thought of the evil day(E)
and bring in a reign of violence.(F)

4 They lie on beds inlaid with ivory,(G)
sprawled out on their couches,(H)
and dine on lambs from the flock(I)
and calves from the stall.
5 They improvise songs[a] to the sound of the harp(J)
and invent[b] their own musical instruments like David.(K)
6 They drink wine by the bowlful(L)
and anoint themselves with the finest oils
but do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.(M)
7 Therefore, they will now go into exile
as the first of the captives,(N)
and the feasting(O) of those who sprawl out
will come to an end.

Israel’s Pride Judged

8 The Lord God has sworn by Himself(P)—this is the declaration of Yahweh, the God of Hosts:

I loathe Jacob’s pride(Q)
and hate his citadels,(R)
so I will hand over the city(S) and everything in it.

9 And if there are 10 men left in one house, they will die.(T) 10 A close relative[c] and burner[d](U) will remove his corpse[e] from the house. He will call to someone in the inner recesses of the house, “Any more with you?”

That person will reply, “None.”

Then he will say, “Silence, because Yahweh’s name must not be invoked.”(V)

11 For the Lord commands:

The large house will be smashed to pieces,
and the small house to rubble.(W)

12 Do horses gallop on the cliffs;
does anyone plow there with oxen?[f]
Yet you have turned justice into poison(X)
and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood(Y)—
13 you who rejoice over Lo-debar(Z)
and say, “Didn’t we capture Karnaim
for ourselves by our own strength?”(AA)
14 But look, I am raising up a nation
against you, house of Israel(AB)—
this is the declaration of the Lord,
the God of Hosts—
and they will oppress you
from the entrance of Hamath[g](AC)
to the Brook of the Arabah.[h]

    Các ngươi sẽ không còn nằm ườn ra dự tiệc nữa.

8 CHÚA lấy chính mình Ngài mà thề, CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời Vạn Quân phán:

“Ta ghê tởm sự kiêu hãnh của Gia-cốp,
    Ta ghét các pháo đài nó,
Ta sẽ nộp thành ngươi cho kẻ thù,
    Và dân cư cùng tài sản trong thành.

9 Nếu trong nhà kia còn lại mười người, họ sẽ chết. 10 Khi thân nhân người chết, là người sẽ phải đốt xác chết, đến đem xác chết ra khỏi nhà, hỏi người còn trốn ở nhà trong: ‘Còn có ai với ngươi nữa không?’ Người kia đáp: ‘Không.’ Thân nhân nói: ‘Suỵt! Chúng ta không nên nhắc đến danh CHÚA.’

11 Vì này CHÚA sẽ truyền lệnh,
    Nhà to lớn sẽ bị đập thành nhiều mảnh,
    Nhà nhỏ bé sẽ nát như dăm.
12 Có thể nào ngựa phi trên các khối đá lởm chởm,
    Hoặc bò cày trên đó không?[a]
Thế mà các ngươi đã biến công lý thành thuốc độc,
    Bông trái của sự công chính thành ngải cứu.
13 Các ngươi reo mừng vì chiếm được thành Lô-đê-ba,
    Các ngươi tự hào: ‘Chúng tôi cậy sức mình chiếm được thành Cát-na-đim!’ ”
14 CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời Vạn Quân phán:
    “Này, hỡi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên,
Chính Ta sẽ khiến một dân tộc dấy lên nghịch cùng ngươi,

Woe to the Complacent

6 Woe to you(A) who are complacent(B) in Zion,
    and to you who feel secure(C) on Mount Samaria,(D)
you notable men of the foremost nation,
    to whom the people of Israel come!(E)
2 Go to Kalneh(F) and look at it;
    go from there to great Hamath,(G)
    and then go down to Gath(H) in Philistia.
Are they better off than(I) your two kingdoms?
    Is their land larger than yours?
3 You put off the day of disaster
    and bring near a reign of terror.(J)
4 You lie on beds adorned with ivory
    and lounge on your couches.(K)
You dine on choice lambs
    and fattened calves.(L)
5 You strum away on your harps(M) like David
    and improvise on musical instruments.(N)
6 You drink wine(O) by the bowlful
    and use the finest lotions,
    but you do not grieve(P) over the ruin of Joseph.(Q)
7 Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;(R)
    your feasting and lounging will end.(S)

The Lord Abhors the Pride of Israel

8 The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself(T)—the Lord God Almighty declares:

“I abhor(U) the pride of Jacob(V)
    and detest his fortresses;(W)
I will deliver up(X) the city
    and everything in it.(Y)”

9 If ten(Z) people are left in one house, they too will die. 10 And if the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of the house to burn them[a](AA) asks anyone who might be hiding there, “Is anyone else with you?” and he says, “No,” then he will go on to say, “Hush!(AB) We must not mention the name of the Lord.”

11 For the Lord has given the command,
    and he will smash(AC) the great house(AD) into pieces
    and the small house into bits.(AE)

12 Do horses run on the rocky crags?
    Does one plow the sea[b] with oxen?
But you have turned justice into poison(AF)
    and the fruit of righteousness(AG) into bitterness(AH)—
13 you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar[c]
    and say, “Did we not take Karnaim[d] by our own strength?(AI)”

14 For the Lord God Almighty declares,
    “I will stir up a nation(AJ) against you, Israel,
that will oppress you all the way
    from Lebo Hamath(AK) to the valley of the Arabah.(AL)”
