Amos 6:4-8

New International Version

⁴You lie on beds adorned with ivory
    and lounge on your couches.^(A)
You dine on choice lambs
    and fattened calves.^(B)
⁵You strum away on your harps^(C) like David
    and improvise on musical instruments.^(D)
⁶You drink wine^(E) by the bowlful
    and use the finest lotions,
    but you do not grieve^(F) over the ruin of Joseph.^(G)
⁷Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;^(H)
    your feasting and lounging will end.^(I)

The Lord Abhors the Pride of Israel

⁸The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself^(J)—the Lord God Almighty declares:

“I abhor^(K) the pride of Jacob^(L)
and detest his fortresses;^(M)
I will deliver up^(N) the city
and everything in it.^(O)”

New International Version

¹¹For the Lord has given the command,
and he will smash^(A) the great house^(B) into pieces
and the small house into bits.^(C)

¹²Do horses run on the rocky crags?
    Does one plow the sea^[a] with oxen?
But you have turned justice into poison^(D)
    and the fruit of righteousness^(E) into bitterness^(F)—
¹³you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar^[b]
    and say, “Did we not take Karnaim^[c] by our own strength?^(G)”

¹⁴For the Lord God Almighty declares,
“I will stir up a nation^(H) against you, Israel,
that will oppress you all the way
from Lebo Hamath^(I) to the valley of the Arabah.^(J)”
