Annunzio del giudizio ed esortazione al ravvedimento
5 (A)Ascoltate questa parola,
questo lamento che io pronunzio su di voi,
o casa d'*Israele!
2 «La vergine d'Israele è caduta
e non risorgerà piú;
giace distesa al suolo
e non c'è chi la rialzi».
3 Perché cosí dice il Signore, Dio:
«Alla città che metteva in campo mille uomini,
non ne resteranno che cento;
alla città che ne metteva in campo cento,
non ne resteranno che dieci per la casa d'Israele».
4 (B)Perché cosí dice il Signore alla casa d'Israele:
«Cercatemi e vivrete.
5 Non cercate *Betel,
non andate a *Ghilgal,
non giungete sino a Beer-Sceba;
perché Ghilgal andrà certamente in esilio,
e Betel sarà ridotto a nulla».
6 Cercate il Signore e vivrete,
affinché egli non si avventi come un fuoco sulla casa di *Giuseppe
e la consumi senza che a Betel ci sia chi la spenga.
7 Voi alterate il diritto in assenzio,
e gettate a terra la giustizia!
8 Egli ha fatto le Pleiadi e Orione,
cambia in aurora l'ombra di morte,
e il giorno in notte oscura;
chiama le acque del mare
e le riversa sulla faccia della terra:
il suo nome è il Signore.
9 Egli fa sorgere improvvisa la rovina sui potenti,
e la rovina piomba sulle fortezze.
10 (C)Essi odiano chi li ammonisce
e detestano chi parla con rettitudine.
11 Perciò, visto che calpestate il povero
ed esigete da lui tributi di frumento,
voi fabbricate case di pietre squadrate,
ma non le abiterete;
piantate vigne deliziose,
ma non ne berrete il vino.
12 Poiché io so quanto sono numerose le vostre *trasgressioni,
come sono gravi i vostri peccati;
voi opprimete il giusto, accettate regali
e danneggiate i poveri in tribunale.
13 Ecco perché, in tempi come questi, il saggio tace;
perché i tempi sono malvagi[a].
14 Cercate il bene e non il male, affinché viviate,
e il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, sia con voi,
come dite.
15 Odiate il male, amate il bene
e, nei tribunali, stabilite saldamente il diritto.
Forse il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, avrà pietà
del resto di Giuseppe.
16 Perciò, cosí dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, il Signore:
«In tutte le piazze si farà lamento
e in tutte le strade si dirà: “Ahimè! ahimè!”
Si inviteranno i contadini a fare cordoglio,
e al lamento quelli che conoscono le nenie del lutto.
17 «In tutte le vigne si alzeranno lamenti,
perché io passerò in mezzo a te», dice il Signore.
18 (D)Guai a voi che desiderate il *giorno del Signore!
Che vi aspettate dal giorno del Signore?
Sarà un giorno di tenebre, non di luce.
19 Voi sarete come uno che fugge davanti a un leone
e s'imbatte in un orso;
come uno che entra in casa, appoggia la mano alla parete,
e lo morde un serpente.
20 Il giorno del Signore non è forse tenebre e non luce?
oscurissimo e senza splendore?
21 «Io odio, disprezzo le vostre *feste,
non prendo piacere nelle vostre assemblee solenni.
22 Se mi offrite i vostri olocausti e le vostre offerte,
io non le gradisco;
e non tengo conto
delle bestie grasse che mi offrite in sacrifici di riconoscenza.
23 Allontana da me il rumore dei tuoi canti!
Non voglio piú sentire il suono delle tue cetre!
24 Scorra piuttosto il diritto come acqua
e la giustizia come un torrente perenne!
25 O casa d'Israele, mi avete forse presentato sacrifici e offerte
nel deserto,
durante i quarant'anni?
26 Ora prenderete sulle spalle il baldacchino del vostro re
e il piedistallo delle vostre immagini,
la stella dei vostri dèi,
che vi siete fatti;
27 e io vi farò andare in esilio oltre *Damasco[b]»,
dice il Signore, il cui nome è Dio degli eserciti.

5 Mga Israelita, pakinggan nʼyo itong panaghoy tungkol sa inyo:
2 Ang Israel na katulad ng isang babaeng birhen ay nabuwal at hindi na muling makabangon.
Pinabayaan siyang nakahandusay sa sarili niyang lupain at walang tumutulong para ibangon siya.
3 Ito ang sinabi ng Panginoong Dios, “Sa 1,000 sundalo na ipapadala ng isang lungsod sa Israel, 100 na lang ang matitira. At sa 100 sundalo na kanyang ipapadala, 10 na lang ang matitira. 4 Kaya kayong mga Israelita, dumulog kayo sa akin at mabubuhay kayo. 5 Huwag na kayong pumunta sa Betel, sa Gilgal, o sa Beersheba, upang sumamba roon. Sapagkat siguradong bibihagin ang mga mamamayan ng Gilgal at mawawala ang Betel. 6 Dumulog kayo sa akin, kayong mga lahi ni Jose, at mabubuhay kayo. Dahil kung hindi, lulusubin ko kayo na parang apoy. Kaya malilipol ang Betel at walang makakapigil nito.[a] 7 Nakakaawa kayo! Ang katarungan ay ginagawa ninyong marumi[b] at pinawawalang-halaga ninyo ang katuwiran!”
8 Ang Dios ang lumikha ng grupo ng mga bituing tinatawag na Pleyades at Orion. Siya ang nagpapalipas ng liwanag sa dilim, at ng araw sa gabi. Tinitipon niya ang tubig mula sa karagatan para pumunta sa mga ulap upang muling ibuhos sa lupa sa pamamagitan ng ulan. Panginoon ang kanyang pangalan. 9 Agad niyang winawasak ang matitibay na napapaderang bayan,[c] at dinudurog ang napapaderang lungsod.
10 Kayong mga taga-Israel, napopoot kayo sa humahatol nang tama at nagsasabi ng totoo sa hukuman. 11 Inaapi ninyo ang mga mahihirap at pinipilit na magbigay sa inyo ng kanilang ani.[d] Kaya hindi kayo makakatira sa ipinatayo ninyong mansyon, at hindi kayo makakainom ng katas mula sa itinanim ninyong mga ubas. 12 Sapagkat alam ko[e] kung gaano karami at kabigat ang inyong mga kasalanan. Inuusig ninyo ang mga taong walang kasalanan at kinikikilan pa ninyo. Hindi ninyo binibigyan ng hustisya sa hukuman ang mga mahihirap. 13 Dahil naghahari ngayon ang kasamaan, ang marurunong ay tumatahimik na lang. 14 Gawin na lamang ninyo ang mabuti at huwag ang masama para mabuhay kayo, at sasamahan kayo ng Panginoong Dios na Makapangyarihan, gaya nang inyong sinasabi. 15 Kapootan ninyo ang masama at gawin ang mabuti, at pairalin ninyo ang hustisya sa inyong mga hukuman. Baka sakaling maawa ang Panginoong Dios na Makapangyarihan sa inyong mga natitira sa mga lahi ni Jose.
16 Kaya ito ang sinasabi ng Panginoong Dios na Makapangyarihan: “Darating ang araw na maririnig ang mga iyakan at panaghoy sa mga plasa at mga lansangan. Ipapatawag ang mga magsasaka para umiyak sa mga patay[f] na kasama ng mga taong inupahan para umiyak. 17 May mga iyakan din sa inyong mga taniman ng ubas.[g] Mangyayari ito dahil parurusahan ko kayo. Ako, ang Panginoon, ang nagsasabi nito.”
Ang Araw ng Paghatol ng Dios
18 Nakakaawa kayong naghihintay ng araw ng Panginoon. Huwag ninyong isipin na araw iyon ng inyong kaligtasan. Sapagkat iyon ang araw na parurusahan kayo. 19 Para kayong taong nag-aakalang ligtas na siya dahil nakatakas siya sa leon, pero nasalubong naman niya ang oso. O di kayaʼy nag-aakalang ligtas na siya dahil nasa loob na siya ng kanyang bahay, pero nang isinandal niya ang kanyang kamay sa dingding, tinuklaw ito ng ahas. 20 Tiyak na darating ang araw ng Panginoon at itoʼy magdudulot ng kaparusahan at hindi kaligtasan; katulad ito ng dilim na walang liwanag kahit kaunti man lang.
Ang Gusto ng Panginoon na Dapat Gawin ng Kanyang mga Mamamayan
21 Sinabi ng Panginoon sa mga Israelita, “Napopoot ako sa inyong mga pista; hindi ako nalulugod sa inyong ginagawang pagtitipon. 22 Kaya kahit dalhan pa ninyo ako ng sari-saring handog, kahit pa ang pinakamabuting handog ay hindi ko tatanggapin. 23 Tigilan na ninyo ang maingay ninyong awitan. Ayokong makinig sa tugtog ng inyong mga alpa. 24 Sa halip, nais kong makita na pinaiiral ninyo ang katarungan at ang katuwiran na parang ilog na patuloy na umaagos.
25 “Mga mamamayan ng Israel, noong nasa ilang ang inyong mga ninuno sa loob ng 40 taon, naghandog ba sila sa akin? Hindi! 26 At ngayon ay buhat-buhat ninyo si Sakut, ang dios-diosang itinuturing ninyong hari, at si Kaiwan, ang dios-diosan ninyong bituin. Ginawa ninyo itong mga imahen para sambahin. 27 Kaya ipapabihag ko kayo at dadalhin sa kabila pa ng Damascus.” Ito nga ang sinabi ng Panginoon na tinatawag na Dios na Makapangyarihan.

A Lament and Call to Repentance
5 Hear this word, Israel, this lament(A) I take up concerning you:
2 “Fallen is Virgin(B) Israel,
never to rise again,
deserted in her own land,
with no one to lift her up.(C)”
3 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Israel:
“Your city that marches out a thousand strong
will have only a hundred left;
your town that marches out a hundred strong
will have only ten left.(D)”
4 This is what the Lord says to Israel:
“Seek(E) me and live;(F)
5 do not seek Bethel,
do not go to Gilgal,(G)
do not journey to Beersheba.(H)
For Gilgal will surely go into exile,
and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.[a](I)”
6 Seek(J) the Lord and live,(K)
or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire;(L)
it will devour them,
and Bethel(M) will have no one to quench it.(N)
8 He who made the Pleiades and Orion,(R)
who turns midnight into dawn(S)
and darkens day into night,(T)
who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the face of the land—
the Lord is his name.(U)
9 With a blinding flash he destroys the stronghold
and brings the fortified city to ruin.(V)
10 There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court(W)
and detest the one who tells the truth.(X)
11 You levy a straw tax on the poor(Y)
and impose a tax on their grain.
Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,(Z)
you will not live in them;(AA)
though you have planted lush vineyards,
you will not drink their wine.(AB)
12 For I know how many are your offenses
and how great your sins.(AC)
There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes(AD)
and deprive the poor(AE) of justice in the courts.(AF)
13 Therefore the prudent keep quiet(AG) in such times,
for the times are evil.(AH)
14 Seek good, not evil,
that you may live.(AI)
Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you,
just as you say he is.
15 Hate evil,(AJ) love good;(AK)
maintain justice in the courts.(AL)
Perhaps(AM) the Lord God Almighty will have mercy(AN)
on the remnant(AO) of Joseph.
16 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord God Almighty, says:
“There will be wailing(AP) in all the streets(AQ)
and cries of anguish in every public square.
The farmers(AR) will be summoned to weep
and the mourners to wail.
17 There will be wailing(AS) in all the vineyards,
for I will pass through(AT) your midst,”
says the Lord.(AU)
The Day of the Lord
18 Woe to you who long
for the day of the Lord!(AV)
Why do you long for the day of the Lord?(AW)
That day will be darkness,(AX) not light.(AY)
19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion
only to meet a bear,(AZ)
as though he entered his house
and rested his hand on the wall
only to have a snake bite him.(BA)
20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness,(BB) not light—
pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?(BC)
21 “I hate,(BD) I despise your religious festivals;(BE)
your assemblies(BF) are a stench to me.
22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings(BG) and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.(BH)
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
I will have no regard for them.(BI)
23 Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.(BJ)
24 But let justice(BK) roll on like a river,
righteousness(BL) like a never-failing stream!(BM)
25 “Did you bring me sacrifices(BN) and offerings
forty years(BO) in the wilderness, people of Israel?
26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king,
the pedestal of your idols,(BP)
the star of your god[b]—
which you made for yourselves.
27 Therefore I will send you into exile(BQ) beyond Damascus,”
says the Lord, whose name is God Almighty.(BR)

5 Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.
2 The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.
3 For thus saith the Lord God; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.
4 For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:
5 But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.
6 Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.
7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,
8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name:
9 That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.
10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.
11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.
13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.
14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.
16 Therefore the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.
17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the Lord.
18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.
19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
20 Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.
22 Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.
24 But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
25 Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, whose name is The God of hosts.
