⁴² But God turned away from them^(A) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.^(B) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:

⁸ “‘But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me;^(A) they did not get rid of the vile images they had set their eyes on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt.^(B) So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in Egypt.^(C)

¹⁴ “Now fear the Lord^(A) and serve him with all faithfulness.^(B) Throw away the gods^(C) your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt,^(D) and serve the Lord.

⁷ They must no longer offer any of their sacrifices to the goat idols^[a](A) to whom they prostitute themselves.^(B) This is to be a lasting ordinance^(C) for them and for the generations to come.’^(D)

⁵ “Ask all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted^(A) and mourned in the fifth and seventh^(B) months for the past seventy years,^(C) was it really for me that you fasted?
