Gods woorden tegen de rijke vrouwen van Samaria
4 De Heer zegt: Luister naar Mij, vrouwen van Samaria, vette koeien[a] van Basan! Jullie behandelen de arme mensen slecht. En dan zeggen jullie tegen je man: "Kom, laten we wijn drinken!" Jullie denken alleen maar aan jezelf. 2 De Heer heeft bij zijn heiligheid gezworen: Op een dag zullen jullie en jullie kinderen worden weggesleept, als vissen aan een vishaak. 3 Jullie zullen allemaal door de gaten in de muren van de stad worden weggesleept naar Harmon, zegt de Heer.
Gods straffen omdat Israël God niet langer aanbidt
4 De Heer zegt: Ga maar naar Bet-El en Gilgal! Ga daar jullie goden maar aanbidden. Dat willen jullie toch zo graag? Breng 's morgens maar offers. Breng op de derde dag van de week jullie tienden van de oogst maar. 5 Verbrand maar een dank-offer van gegist deeg![b] Schep maar op over jullie vrijwillige offers. Dat doen jullie toch zo graag, volk van Israël? zegt de Heer.
6 Voor straf heb Ik ervoor gezorgd dat jullie niets meer te eten hebben. In al jullie steden en dorpen ontstond hongersnood. Toch zijn jullie niet bij Mij teruggekomen, zegt de Heer.
7 Ook heb Ik ervoor gezorgd dat het drie maanden vóór de oogsttijd niet meer regende. Op sommige steden liet Ik het regenen, maar op andere niet. Sommige akkers kregen regen, maar andere niet, zodat ze verdroogden. 8 De mensen zwierven in groepjes van twee of drie van stad naar stad om water te drinken, maar er was nooit genoeg. Toch zijn jullie niet bij Mij teruggekomen, zegt de Heer.
9 Ik heb jullie gestraft met ziekten in het graan. Ik heb jullie tuinen en wijngaarden, vijgenbomen en olijfbomen door de sprinkhanen laten kaalvreten. Toch zijn jullie niet bij Mij teruggekomen, zegt de Heer.
10 Ik heb de pest laten komen, zoals vroeger in Egypte. Ik heb jullie jonge mannen laten doden in de oorlog. Ik heb jullie paarden als buit laten meenemen. Ik heb jullie de stank van jullie legerkampen laten ruiken. Toch zijn jullie niet bij Mij teruggekomen, zegt de Heer.
11 Ik heb sommige van jullie steden helemaal laten verwoesten, zoals vroeger Sodom en Gomorra.[c] Jullie lijken wel een verkoold stuk hout dat uit het vuur is gerukt. Toch zijn jullie niet bij Mij teruggekomen, zegt de Heer.
12 Daarom zal Ik jullie straffen, bewoners van Israël! Maak je dus klaar om je God te ontmoeten! 13 Want Hij die de wind en de bergen maakt, Hij die de mensen laat weten wat zijn plannen zijn, Hij die de dag verandert in nacht, Hij die over de bergen wandelt, is de Heer, de God van de hemelse legers.

- Amos 4:1 In veel culturen was dik zijn mooi: het was een teken dat je rijk was. Waarschijnlijk worden de vrouwen hier 'koeien' genoemd om aan te geven dat ze rijk waren, niet om ze te beledigen.
- Amos 4:5 In de meel-offers voor de Heer mocht geen gist zitten!
- Amos 4:11 Sodom en Gomorra waren twee steden die honderden jaren eerder door God waren verwoest omdat de bewoners zo slecht waren. Lees Genesis 13:13 en Genesis 19:15, 24 en 25.

God’s Punishments Have Not Reformed Israel
4 Hear this word, you (A)cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria,
Who oppress the (B)poor,
Who crush the needy,
Who say to [a]your husbands, “Bring wine, let us (C)drink!”
2 (D)The Lord God has sworn by His holiness:
“Behold, the days shall come upon you
When He will take you away (E)with fishhooks,
And your posterity with fishhooks.
3 (F)You will go out through broken walls,
Each one straight ahead of her,
And you will [b]be cast into Harmon,”
Says the Lord.
4 “Come(G) to Bethel and transgress,
At (H)Gilgal multiply transgression;
(I)Bring your sacrifices every morning,
(J)Your tithes every three [c]days.
5 (K)Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven,
Proclaim and announce (L)the freewill offerings;
For this you love,
You children of Israel!”
Says the Lord God.
Israel Did Not Accept Correction
6 “Also I gave you [d]cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
And lack of bread in all your places;
(M)Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.
7 “I also withheld rain from you,
When there were still three months to the harvest.
I made it rain on one city,
I withheld rain from another city.
One part was rained upon,
And where it did not rain the part withered.
8 So two or three cities wandered to another city to drink water,
But they were not satisfied;
Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.
9 “I(N) blasted you with blight and mildew.
When your gardens increased,
Your vineyards,
Your fig trees,
And your olive trees,
(O)The locust devoured them;
Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.
10 “I sent among you a plague (P)after the manner of Egypt;
Your young men I killed with a sword,
Along with your captive horses;
I made the stench of your camps come up into your nostrils;
Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.
11 “I overthrew some of you,
As God overthrew (Q)Sodom and Gomorrah,
And you were like a firebrand plucked from the burning;
Yet you have not returned to Me,”
Says the Lord.
12 “Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel;
Because I will do this to you,
(R)Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”

4 “Listen, you [lovely] cows of Bashan,
who live on Mount Shomron,
who oppress the poor and grind down the needy,
who say to their husbands, ‘Bring something to drink’:
2 Adonai Elohim has sworn by his holiness
that your time is surely coming.
“You will be dragged away with hooks,
the last of you with fishhooks.
3 You will leave through breaks in the wall,
each woman right behind the next,
and be sent off to Harmonah,” says Adonai.
4 “Come to Beit-El, and commit crimes;
to Gilgal, and commit more crimes!
Bring your sacrifices in the morning
and your tithes after three days;
5 burn leavened bread as a thank offering;
brag in public about your voluntary offerings;
because that’s what you love to do, Isra’el!”
says Adonai Elohim.
6 “I made your teeth clean of food in all your cities,
left you nothing to eat in all your villages;
still you haven’t returned to me,” says Adonai.
7 “I withheld the rain from you
three months before the harvest.
I made it rain on one city
and not on another —
one field had rain,
while another with no rain dried up;
8 from two or three cities they would stagger to one city
for water to drink, but there wasn’t enough;
still you haven’t returned to me,” says Adonai.
9 “I struck your crops with hot winds and blight,
your many gardens and vineyards;
the cutter-worms devoured
your fig and olive trees;
still you haven’t returned to me,” says Adonai.
10 “I sent a plague on you like that of Egypt,
put your young men to death with the sword;
let your horses be captured;
and filled your nostrils with the stench of your camps;
still you haven’t returned to me,” says Adonai.
11 “I overthrew some of you,
as when God overthrew S’dom and ‘Amora;
you were like a burning stick snatched from the fire;
still you haven’t returned to me,” says Adonai.
12 “This is why I will deal with you in this way, Isra’el;
and because I will deal with you in this way,
prepare to meet your God, Isra’el —
13 him who forms mountains and creates wind,
who declares to humankind his thoughts,
who turns the morning to darkness
and strides on the heights of the earth —
Adonai Elohei-Tzva’ot is his name.”
