God’s Reasons for Punishing Israel
3 Listen to this message that the Lord has spoken against you, Israelites, against the entire clan that I brought from the land of Egypt:(A)
2 I have known only you(B)
out of all the clans of the earth;
therefore, I will punish you for all your iniquities.(C)
3 Can two walk together(D)
without agreeing to meet?
4 Does a lion roar(E) in the forest
when it has no prey?
Does a young lion growl from its lair
unless it has captured something?
5 Does a bird land in a trap on the ground
if there is no bait for it?
Does a trap spring from the ground
when it has caught nothing?
6 If a ram’s horn(F) is blown in a city,
aren’t people afraid?(G)
If a disaster(H) occurs in a city,
hasn’t the Lord done it?(I)
7 Indeed, the Lord God does nothing
without revealing his counsel
to his servants the prophets.(J)
8 A lion has roared;(K)
who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken;(L)
who will not prophesy?(M)
9 Proclaim on the citadels in Ashdod(N)
and on the citadels in the land of Egypt:
Assemble on the mountains of Samaria,(O)
and see the great turmoil in the city
and the acts of oppression within it.(P)
10 The people are incapable of doing right(Q)—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
those who store up violence and destruction(R)
in their citadels.
11 Therefore, the Lord God says:
12 The Lord says:
As the shepherd snatches two legs
or a piece of an ear
from the lion’s mouth,(V)
so the Israelites who live in Samaria
will be rescued
with only the corner of a bed(W)
or the[a] cushion[b] of a couch.[c](X)
13 Listen and testify(Y) against the house of Jacob—
this is the declaration of the Lord God,
the God of Armies.
14 I will punish the altars of Bethel(Z)
on the day I punish Israel for its crimes;
the horns of the altar(AA) will be cut off
and fall to the ground.(AB)
15 I will demolish the winter house(AC)
and the summer house;(AD)
the houses inlaid with ivory(AE) will be destroyed,
and the great houses(AF) will come to an end.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

II. AVVERTIMENTI E MINACCE A ISRAELE

3 Ascoltate questa parola
che il Signore ha detto riguardo a voi,
Israeliti,
e riguardo a tutta la stirpe
che ho fatto uscire dall'Egitto:
2 «Soltanto voi ho eletto
tra tutte le stirpi della terra;
perciò io vi farò scontare
tutte le vostre iniquità».
La vocazione profetica è irresistibile
3 Camminano forse due uomini insieme
senza essersi messi d'accordo?
4 Ruggisce forse il leone nella foresta,
se non ha qualche preda?
Il leoncello manda un grido dalla sua tana
se non ha preso nulla?
5 Cade forse l'uccello a terra,
se non gli è stata tesa un'insidia?
Scatta forse la tagliola dal suolo,
se non ha preso qualche cosa?
6 Risuona forse la tromba nella città,
senza che il popolo si metta in allarme?
Avviene forse nella città una sventura,
che non sia causata dal Signore?
7 In verità, il Signore non fa cosa alcuna
senza aver rivelato il suo consiglio
ai suoi servitori, i profeti.
8 Ruggisce il leone:
chi mai non trema?
Il Signore Dio ha parlato:
chi può non profetare?
Samaria, corrotta, perirà
9 Fatelo udire nei palazzi di Asdòd
e nei palazzi del paese d'Egitto e dite:
Adunatevi sui monti di Samaria
e osservate quanti disordini sono in essa,
e quali violenze sono nel suo seno.
10 Non sanno agire con rettitudine,
dice il Signore,
violenza e rapina accumulano nei loro palazzi.
11 Perciò così dice il Signore Dio:
Il nemico circonderà il paese,
sarà abbattuta la tua potenza
e i tuoi palazzi saranno saccheggiati.
12 Così dice il Signore:
Come il pastore strappa dalla bocca del leone
due zampe o il lobo d'un orecchio,
così scamperanno gli Israeliti che abitano a Samaria
su un cantuccio di divano
o su una coperta da letto.
Contro Betel e le case lussuose
13 Ascoltate e attestatelo nella casa di Giacobbe,
dice il Signore Dio, Dio degli eserciti:
14 Quando farò giustizia
dei misfatti d'Israele,
io infierirò contro gli altari di Betel;
saranno spezzati i corni dell'altare
e cadranno a terra.
15 Demolirò la casa d'inverno
insieme con al sua casa d'estate
e andranno in rovina le case d'avorio
e scompariranno i grandi palazzi.
