God Warns Israel to Stop Sinning

Amos was one of the shepherds from the town of Tekoa. God showed him this vision about Israel. It was at the time Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel. This happened two years before the earthquake.

Amos said,

“The Lord will roar like a lion from Jerusalem.
    His loud voice will sound like a growl from Jerusalem.
The green pastures of the shepherds will become dry.
    Even Mount Carmel will dry up.”

Israel’s Neighbors Are Punished

The People of Aram

This is what the Lord says:

“For the many crimes Damascus is doing,
    I will punish them.
They beat the people of Gilead
    with threshing boards that had iron teeth.
So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael.
    That fire will destroy the strong towers of Ben-Hadad.
I will break down the gate of Damascus.
    I will destroy the king who is in the Valley of Aven.
I will also destroy the king of Beth Eden.
    The people of Aram will be taken captive to the country of Kir,” says the Lord.

The People of Philistia

This is what the Lord says:

“For the many crimes Gaza is doing,
    I will punish them.
They sold all the people of one area
    as slaves to Edom.
So I will send a fire on the walls of Gaza.
    That fire will destroy the city’s strong towers.
I will destroy the king of the city of Ashdod.
    I will destroy the king of the city of Ashkelon.
Then I will turn against the people of the city of Ekron.
    I will punish the Philistines until they are all dead,” says the Lord God.

The People of Phoenicia

This is what the Lord says:

“For the many crimes Tyre is doing,
    I will punish them.
They sold all the people of one area
    as slaves to Edom.
    They forgot the brotherly agreement they had made with Israel.
10 So I will send fire on the walls of Tyre.
    That fire will destroy the city’s strong towers.”

The People of Edom

11 This is what the Lord says:

“For the many crimes Edom is doing,
    I will punish them.
They hunted down their brothers, the Israelites, with the sword.
    They showed them no mercy.
The people of Edom were continually angry.
    And they did not hold back their great anger.
12 So I will send fire on the city of Teman.
    That fire will even destroy the strong towers of Bozrah.”[a]

The People of Ammon

13 This is what the Lord says:

“For the many crimes Ammon is doing,
    I will punish them.
They ripped open the pregnant women in Gilead.
    They did this so they could take over that land
    and make their own country larger.
14 So I will send fire on the walls of Rabbah.
    That fire will destroy the city’s strong towers.
It will come during a day of battle.
    There will be strong winds on a stormy day.
15 Then their king and leaders will be captured.
    They will all be taken away together,” says the Lord.

Judgement on Israel’s Neighbours

The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing Damascus(I)
for three crimes, even four,(J)
because they threshed Gilead with iron sledges.
Therefore, I will send fire against Hazael’s palace,
and it will consume Ben-hadad’s(K) citadels.
I will break down the gates[c](L) of Damascus.
I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven,
and the one who wields the sceptre from Beth-eden.
The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir.(M)
The Lord has spoken.

The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing Gaza(N)
for three crimes, even four,
because they exiled a whole community,
handing them over to Edom.
Therefore, I will send fire against the walls of Gaza,
and it will consume its citadels.
I will cut off the ruler from Ashdod,(O)
and the one who wields the sceptre from Ashkelon.(P)
I will also turn my hand against Ekron,
and the remainder of the Philistines(Q) will perish.
The Lord God has spoken.

The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing Tyre(R)
for three crimes, even four,
because they handed over
a whole community of exiles to Edom
and broke[d] a treaty of brotherhood.(S)
10 Therefore, I will send fire(T) against the walls of Tyre,
and it will consume its citadels.

11 The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing Edom(U)
for three crimes, even four,
because he pursued his brother with the sword.(V)
He stifled his compassion,
his anger tore at him(W) continually,
and he harboured his rage incessantly.
12 Therefore, I will send fire against Teman,(X)
and it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.

13 The Lord says:

I will not relent from punishing the Ammonites(Y)
for three crimes, even four,
because they ripped open
the pregnant women of Gilead(Z)
in order to enlarge their territory.(AA)
14 Therefore, I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah,(AB)
and it will consume its citadels.
There will be shouting on the day of battle(AC)
and a violent wind on the day of the storm.(AD)
15 Their king and his princes
will go into exile together.(AE)
The Lord has spoken.

10 I will send fire on the walls of Tyre
    that will consume her fortresses.(AF)

11 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Edom,(AG)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because he pursued his brother with a sword(AH)
    and slaughtered the women of the land,
because his anger raged continually
    and his fury flamed unchecked,(AI)
12 I will send fire on Teman(AJ)
    that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.(AK)

13 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Ammon,(AL)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because he ripped open the pregnant women(AM) of Gilead
    in order to extend his borders,
14 I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah(AN)
    that will consume(AO) her fortresses
amid war cries(AP) on the day of battle,
    amid violent winds(AQ) on a stormy day.
15 Her king[e] will go into exile,
    he and his officials together,(AR)
says the Lord.(AS)

Judgments on Israel’s Neighbors

And he said:

“The Lord (F)roars from Zion,

Judgment on the Nations

Thus says the Lord:

“For three transgressions of (H)Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they have (I)threshed Gilead with implements of iron.
(J)But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael,
Which shall devour the palaces of (K)Ben-Hadad.
I will also break the gate (L)bar of Damascus,
And cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven,
And the one who [a]holds the scepter from [b]Beth Eden.
The people of Syria shall go captive to Kir,”
Says the Lord.

Thus says the Lord:

“For three transgressions of (M)Gaza, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they took captive the whole captivity
To deliver them up to Edom.
(N)But I will send a fire upon the wall of Gaza,
Which shall devour its palaces.
I will cut off the inhabitant (O)from Ashdod,
And the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will (P)turn My hand against Ekron,
And (Q)the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,”
Says the Lord God.

Thus says the Lord:

“For three transgressions of (R)Tyre, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom,
And did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
10 But I will send a fire upon the wall of Tyre,
Which shall devour its palaces.”

11 Thus says the Lord:

“For three transgressions of (S)Edom, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because he pursued his (T)brother with the sword,
And cast off all pity;
His anger tore perpetually,
And he kept his wrath forever.
12 But (U)I will send a fire upon Teman,
Which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.”

13 Thus says the Lord:

“For three transgressions of (V)the people of Ammon, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment,
Because they ripped open the women with child in Gilead,
That they might enlarge their territory.
14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of (W)Rabbah,
And it shall devour its palaces,
(X)Amid shouting in the day of battle,
And a tempest in the day of the whirlwind.
15 (Y)Their king shall go into captivity,
He and his princes together,”
Says the Lord.
