Are you not like the [a]people of Ethiopia to Me,
O children of Israel?” says the Lord.
“Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt,
The (A)Philistines from (B)Caphtor,[b]
And the Syrians from (C)Kir?

“Behold, (D)the eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful kingdom,
And I (E)will destroy it from the face of the earth;
Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”
Says the Lord.

“For surely I will command,
And will [c]sift the house of Israel among all nations,
As grain is sifted in a sieve;
(F)Yet not the smallest [d]grain shall fall to the ground.
10 All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword,
(G)Who say, ‘The calamity shall not overtake nor confront us.’

Israel Will Be Restored

11 “On(H) that day I will raise up
The [e]tabernacle of David, which has fallen down,
And [f]repair its damages;
I will raise up its ruins,
And rebuild it as in the days of old;
12 (I)That they may possess the remnant of (J)Edom,[g]
And all the Gentiles who are called by My name,”
Says the Lord who does this thing.

13 “Behold, (K)the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“When the plowman shall overtake the reaper,
And the treader of grapes him who sows seed;
(L)The mountains shall drip with sweet wine,
And all the hills shall flow with it.
14 (M)I will bring back the captives of My people Israel;
(N)They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them;
They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them;
They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them.
15 I will plant them in their land,
(O)And no longer shall they be pulled up
From the land I have given them,”
Says the Lord your God.

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel, and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Have you come to inquire of Me? As I live,” says the Lord God, (A)“I will not be inquired of by you.” ’ Will you judge them, son of man, will you judge them? Then (B)make known to them the abominations of their fathers.

“Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On the day when (C)I chose Israel and raised My hand in an oath to the descendants of the house of Jacob, and made Myself (D)known to them in the land of Egypt, I raised My hand in an oath to them, saying, (E)‘I am the Lord your God.’ On that day I raised My hand in an oath to them, (F)to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, (G)‘flowing with milk and honey,’ (H)the glory of all lands. Then I said to them, ‘Each of you, (I)throw away (J)the abominations which are before his eyes, and do not defile yourselves with (K)the idols of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.’ But they rebelled against Me and would not [a]obey Me. They did not all cast away the abominations which were before their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said, ‘I will (L)pour out My fury on them and fulfill My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.’ (M)But I acted for My name’s sake, that it should not be profaned before the Gentiles among whom they were, in whose sight I had made Myself (N)known to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt.

10 “Therefore I (O)made them go out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. 11 (P)And I gave them My statutes and [b]showed them My judgments, (Q)‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them.’ 12 Moreover I also gave them My (R)Sabbaths, to be a sign between them and Me, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. 13 Yet the house of Israel (S)rebelled against Me in the wilderness; they did not walk in My statutes; they (T)despised My judgments, (U)‘which, if a man does, he shall live by them’; and they greatly (V)defiled My Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out My fury on them in the (W)wilderness, to consume them. 14 (X)But I acted for My name’s sake, that it should not be profaned before the Gentiles, in whose sight I had brought them out. 15 So (Y)I also raised My hand in an oath to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, (Z)‘flowing with milk and honey,’ (AA)the glory of all lands, 16 (AB)because they despised My judgments and did not walk in My statutes, but profaned My Sabbaths; for (AC)their heart went after their idols. 17 (AD)Nevertheless My eye spared them from destruction. I did not make an end of them in the wilderness.

18 “But I said to their children in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, nor observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols. 19 I am the Lord your God: (AE)Walk in My statutes, keep My judgments, and do them; 20 (AF)hallow My Sabbaths, and they will be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’

Then the word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, speak to the elders(A) of Israel and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Have you come to inquire(B) of me? As surely as I live, I will not let you inquire of me, declares the Sovereign Lord.(C)

“Will you judge them? Will you judge them, son of man? Then confront them with the detestable practices of their ancestors(D) and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I chose(E) Israel, I swore with uplifted hand(F) to the descendants of Jacob and revealed myself to them in Egypt. With uplifted hand I said to them, “I am the Lord your God.(G) On that day I swore(H) to them that I would bring them out of Egypt into a land I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey,(I) the most beautiful of all lands.(J) And I said to them, “Each of you, get rid of the vile images(K) you have set your eyes on, and do not defile yourselves with the idols(L) of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.(M)

“‘But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me;(N) they did not get rid of the vile images they had set their eyes on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt.(O) So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in Egypt.(P) But for the sake of my name, I brought them out of Egypt.(Q) I did it to keep my name from being profaned(R) in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites. 10 Therefore I led them out of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness.(S) 11 I gave them my decrees and made known to them my laws, by which the person who obeys them will live.(T) 12 Also I gave them my Sabbaths(U) as a sign(V) between us,(W) so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.(X)

13 “‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled(Y) against me in the wilderness.
