Amos 8:4-6 World English Bible (WEB)

Hear this, you who desire to swallow up the needy,
and cause the poor of the land to fail,
Saying, ‘When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain?
And the Sabbath, that we may market wheat,
making the ephah[a] small, and the shekel[b] large,
    and dealing falsely with balances of deceit;
that we may buy the poor for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
and sell the sweepings with the wheat?’”

Footnotes:

  1. 8:5 1 ephah is about 22 liters or about 2/3 of a bushel
  2. 8:5 a normal shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces.

Amos 8:4-6 New International Version (NIV)

Hear this, you who trample the needy
and do away with the poor of the land,

saying,

“When will the New Moon be over
    that we may sell grain,
and the Sabbath be ended
    that we may market wheat?”
skimping on the measure,
    boosting the price
    and cheating with dishonest scales,
buying the poor with silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
selling even the sweepings with the wheat.
