Amos 6
New Living Translation
6 What sorrow awaits you who lounge in luxury in Jerusalem,[a]
and you who feel secure in Samaria!
You are famous and popular in Israel,
and people go to you for help.
2 But go over to Calneh
and see what happened there.
Then go to the great city of Hamath
and down to the Philistine city of Gath.
You are no better than they were,
and look at how they were destroyed.
3 You push away every thought of coming disaster,
but your actions only bring the day of judgment closer.
4 How terrible for you who sprawl on ivory beds
and lounge on your couches,
eating the meat of tender lambs from the flock
and of choice calves fattened in the stall.
5 You sing trivial songs to the sound of the harp
and fancy yourselves to be great musicians like David.
6 You drink wine by the bowlful
and perfume yourselves with fragrant lotions.
You care nothing about the ruin of your nation.[b]
7 Therefore, you will be the first to be led away as captives.
Suddenly, all your parties will end.
8 The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his own name, and this is what he, the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies, says:
“I despise the arrogance of Israel,[c]
and I hate their fortresses.
I will give this city
and everything in it to their enemies.”
9 (If there are ten men left in one house, they will all die. 10 And when a relative who is responsible to dispose of the dead[d] goes into the house to carry out the bodies, he will ask the last survivor, “Is anyone else with you?” When the person begins to swear, “No, by . . . ,” he will interrupt and say, “Stop! Don’t even mention the name of the Lord.”)
11 When the Lord gives the command,
homes both great and small will be smashed to pieces.
12 Can horses gallop over boulders?
Can oxen be used to plow them?
But that’s how foolish you are when you turn justice into poison
and the sweet fruit of righteousness into bitterness.
13 And you brag about your conquest of Lo-debar.[e]
You boast, “Didn’t we take Karnaim[f] by our own strength?”
14 “O people of Israel, I am about to bring an enemy nation against you,”
says the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.
“They will oppress you throughout your land—
from Lebo-hamath in the north
to the Arabah Valley in the south.”

6 ¡Qué aflicción les espera a ustedes que están a sus anchas en medio de lujos en Jerusalén,[a]
y a ustedes que se sienten seguros en Samaria!
Son famosos y conocidos en Israel,
y la gente acude a ustedes en busca de ayuda.
2 Pero vayan a Calne
y vean lo que ocurrió allí.
Vayan luego a la gran ciudad de Hamat
y desciendan a la ciudad filistea de Gat.
Ustedes no son mejores que ellos,
y miren cómo fueron destruidos.
3 No quieren pensar en el desastre que viene,
pero sus acciones solo acercan más el día del juicio.
4 Qué terrible será para ustedes que se dejan caer en camas de marfil
y están a sus anchas en sus sillones,
comiendo corderos tiernos del rebaño
y becerros selectos engordados en el establo.
5 Entonan canciones frívolas al son del arpa
y se creen músicos tan magníficos como David.
6 Beben vino en tazones llenos
y se perfuman con lociones fragantes.
No les importa la ruina de su nación.[b]
7 Por lo tanto, ustedes serán los primeros en ser llevados cautivos.
De repente se acabarán todas sus fiestas.
8 El Señor Soberano ha jurado por su propio nombre y esto es lo que dice el Señor Dios de los Ejércitos Celestiales:
«Desprecio la arrogancia de Israel[c]
y odio sus fortalezas.
Entregaré esta ciudad
a sus enemigos junto con todo lo que hay en ella».
9 (Si quedan diez hombres en una casa, todos morirán. 10 Luego, cuando el pariente responsable de deshacerse de los muertos[d] entre en la casa para llevarse los cuerpos, le preguntará al último sobreviviente: «¿Está alguien más contigo?». Entonces, cuando la persona comience a jurar: «No, por...», la interrumpirá y dirá: «¡Cállate! Ni siquiera menciones el nombre del Señor»).
11 Cuando el Señor dé la orden,
las casas, tanto grandes como pequeñas, serán reducidas a escombros.
12 ¿Pueden galopar los caballos sobre rocas grandes?
¿Se pueden usar bueyes para ararlas?
Así de necios son ustedes cuando convierten la justicia en veneno
y el fruto dulce de la rectitud en amargura.
13 Ustedes se jactan de su conquista de Lo-debar[e]
y alardean: «¿No tomamos Karnaim[f] por nuestra propia fuerza?».
14 «Oh pueblo de Israel, estoy a punto de levantar una nación enemiga contra ti
—dice el Señor Dios de los Ejércitos Celestiales—.
Los oprimirán por todo su territorio,
desde Lebo-hamat en el norte
hasta el valle de Arabá en el sur».
