Amos 1-3
New Living Translation

1 This message was given to Amos, a shepherd from the town of Tekoa in Judah. He received this message in visions two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam II, the son of Jehoash,[a] was king of Israel.

2 This is what he saw and heard:

“The Lord’s voice will roar from Zion
    and thunder from Jerusalem!
The lush pastures of the shepherds will dry up;
    the grass on Mount Carmel will wither and die.”

God’s Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

3 This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Damascus have sinned again and again,[b]
    and I will not let them go unpunished!
They beat down my people in Gilead
    as grain is threshed with iron sledges.
4 So I will send down fire on King Hazael’s palace,
    and the fortresses of King Ben-hadad will be destroyed.
5 I will break down the gates of Damascus
    and slaughter the people in the valley of Aven.
I will destroy the ruler in Beth-eden,
    and the people of Aram will go as captives to Kir,”
    says the Lord.

6 This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Gaza have sinned again and again,
    and I will not let them go unpunished!
They sent whole villages into exile,
    selling them as slaves to Edom.
7 So I will send down fire on the walls of Gaza,
    and all its fortresses will be destroyed.
8 I will slaughter the people of Ashdod
    and destroy the king of Ashkelon.
Then I will turn to attack Ekron,
    and the few Philistines still left will be killed,”
    says the Sovereign Lord.

9 This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Tyre have sinned again and again,
    and I will not let them go unpunished!
They broke their treaty of brotherhood with Israel,
    selling whole villages as slaves to Edom.
10 So I will send down fire on the walls of Tyre,
    and all its fortresses will be destroyed.”

11 This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Edom have sinned again and again,
    and I will not let them go unpunished!
They chased down their relatives, the Israelites, with swords,
    showing them no mercy.
In their rage, they slashed them continually
    and were unrelenting in their anger.
12 So I will send down fire on Teman,
    and the fortresses of Bozrah will be destroyed.”

13 This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Ammon have sinned again and again,
    and I will not let them go unpunished!
When they attacked Gilead to extend their borders,
    they ripped open pregnant women with their swords.
14 So I will send down fire on the walls of Rabbah,
    and all its fortresses will be destroyed.
The battle will come upon them with shouts,
    like a whirlwind in a mighty storm.
15 And their king[c] and his princes will go into exile together,”
    says the Lord.

2 This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Moab have sinned again and again,[d]
    and I will not let them go unpunished!
They desecrated the bones of Edom’s king,
    burning them to ashes.
2 So I will send down fire on the land of Moab,
    and all the fortresses in Kerioth will be destroyed.
The people will fall in the noise of battle,
    as the warriors shout and the ram’s horn sounds.
3 And I will destroy their king
    and slaughter all their princes,”
    says the Lord.

God’s Judgment on Judah and Israel

4 This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Judah have sinned again and again,
    and I will not let them go unpunished!
They have rejected the instruction of the Lord,
    refusing to obey his decrees.
They have been led astray by the same lies
    that deceived their ancestors.
5 So I will send down fire on Judah,
    and all the fortresses of Jerusalem will be destroyed.”

6 This is what the Lord says:

“The people of Israel have sinned again and again,
    and I will not let them go unpunished!
They sell honorable people for silver
    and poor people for a pair of sandals.
7 They trample helpless people in the dust
    and shove the oppressed out of the way.
Both father and son sleep with the same woman,
    corrupting my holy name.
8 At their religious festivals,
    they lounge in clothing their debtors put up as security.
In the house of their gods,[e]
    they drink wine bought with unjust fines.

9 “But as my people watched,
    I destroyed the Amorites,
though they were as tall as cedars
    and as strong as oaks.
I destroyed the fruit on their branches
    and dug out their roots.
10 It was I who rescued you from Egypt
    and led you through the desert for forty years,
    so you could possess the land of the Amorites.
11 I chose some of your sons to be prophets
    and others to be Nazirites.
Can you deny this, my people of Israel?”
    asks the Lord.
12 “But you caused the Nazirites to sin by making them drink wine,
    and you commanded the prophets, ‘Shut up!’

13 “So I will make you groan
    like a wagon loaded down with sheaves of grain.
14 Your fastest runners will not get away.
    The strongest among you will become weak.
Even mighty warriors will be unable to save themselves.
15     The archers will not stand their ground.
The swiftest runners won’t be fast enough to escape.
    Even those riding horses won’t be able to save themselves.
16 On that day the most courageous of your fighting men
    will drop their weapons and run for their lives,”
    says the Lord.

3 Listen to this message that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel—against the entire family I rescued from Egypt:

2 “From among all the families on the earth,
    I have been intimate with you alone.
That is why I must punish you
    for all your sins.”

Witnesses against Guilty Israel

3 Can two people walk together
    without agreeing on the direction?
4 Does a lion ever roar in a thicket
    without first finding a victim?
Does a young lion growl in its den
    without first catching its prey?
5 Does a bird ever get caught in a trap
    that has no bait?
Does a trap spring shut
    when there’s nothing to catch?
6 When the ram’s horn blows a warning,
    shouldn’t the people be alarmed?
Does disaster come to a city
    unless the Lord has planned it?

7 Indeed, the Sovereign Lord never does anything
    until he reveals his plans to his servants the prophets.

8 The lion has roared—
    so who isn’t frightened?
The Sovereign Lord has spoken—
    so who can refuse to proclaim his message?
9 Announce this to the leaders of Philistia[f]
    and to the great ones of Egypt:
“Take your seats now on the hills around Samaria,
    and witness the chaos and oppression in Israel.”

10 “My people have forgotten how to do right,”
    says the Lord.
“Their fortresses are filled with wealth
    taken by theft and violence.
11 Therefore,” says the Sovereign Lord,
    “an enemy is coming!
He will surround them and shatter their defenses.
    Then he will plunder all their fortresses.”

12 This is what the Lord says:

“A shepherd who tries to rescue a sheep from a lion’s mouth
    will recover only two legs or a piece of an ear.
So it will be for the Israelites in Samaria lying on luxurious beds,
    and for the people of Damascus reclining on couches.[g]

13 “Now listen to this, and announce it throughout all Israel,[h]” says the Lord, the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.

14 “On the very day I punish Israel for its sins,
    I will destroy the pagan altars at Bethel.
The horns of the altar will be cut off
    and fall to the ground.
15 And I will destroy the beautiful homes of the wealthy—
    their winter mansions and their summer houses, too—
all their palaces filled with ivory,”
    says the Lord.

Ang Pulong Sa Dios

Gipasipad-an nila pag-ayo[c] ang mga taga-Gilead, 4 busa sunogon ko ang palasyo ni Haring Hazael ug ang lig-ong mga bahin niini nga gipahimo sa iyang anak nga si Ben Hadad. 5 Gub-on ko ang pultahan sa Damascus ug laglagon ko ang hari sa Kapatagan sa Aven ug ang hari sa Bet Eden.[d] Bihagon ngadto sa Kir ang mga katawhan sa Syria.[e] Ako, ang Ginoo, ang nagaingon niini.”

6 Mao kini ang gisulti sa Ginoo bahin sa Filistia, “Tungod sa padayon nga pagpakasala sa mga taga-Gaza,[f] silotan ko gayod sila. Gibihag nila ang tanang mga tawo sa mga lungsod ug gibaligya isip mga ulipon sa Edom, 7 busa sunogon ko ang mga paril[g] sa Gaza apil ang lig-ong mga bahin niini. 8 Laglagon ko ang hari sa Ashdod ug ang hari sa Ashkelon, ug silotan ko ang mga taga-Ekron.[h] Ang mga Filistihanon nga mahibilin mangamatay usab. Ako, ang Ginoong Dios, ang nagaingon niini.”

9 Mao kini ang gisulti sa Ginoo bahin sa Tyre, “Tungod sa padayon nga pagpakasala sa mga taga-Tyre, silotan ko gayod sila. Gibaligya nila isip mga ulipon sa Edom ang tanang mga tawo sa mga lungsod, ug wala nila tumana ang ilang kasabotan uban niining mga tawhana ingon nga managhigala. 10 Busa sunogon ko ang mga paril sa Tyre apil ang lig-ong mga bahin niini.”

Ang Silot alang sa Nasod sa Edom

11 Mao kini ang gisulti sa Ginoo bahin sa Edom, “Tungod sa padayon nga pagpakasala sa mga taga-Edom, silotan ko gayod sila. Gipanggukod nila ang ilang mga kadugo nga mga Israelinhon ug gipangpatay, ug wala nila kini kaloy-i. Dili gayod mawala ang ilang kasuko sa mga Israelinhon. 12 Busa sunogon ko ang Teman apil ang lig-ong mga bahin sa Bozra.[i]”

Ang Silot alang sa Nasod sa Ammon

13 Mao kini ang gisulti sa Ginoo bahin sa Ammon, “Tungod sa padayon nga pagpakasala sa mga taga-Ammon, silotan ko gayod sila. Gipanglaplapan nila ang tiyan sa mga babayeng mabdos sa Gilead aron lang maangkon kining yutaa. 14 Busa sunogon ko ang mga paril sa Raba[j] apil ang lig-ong mga bahin niini. Madungog ang pagsinggit sa ilang mga kaaway nga nagasulong kanila nga daw nagahaguros nga bagyo. 15 Pagabihagon ang hari sa Ammon apil ang iyang mga opisyal. Ako, ang Ginoo, ang nagaingon niini.”

Ang Silot alang sa Nasod sa Moab

2 Mao kini ang gisulti sa Ginoo bahin sa Moab, “Tungod sa padayon nga pagpakasala sa mga taga-Moab, silotan ko gayod sila. Kay gisunog nila ang mga bukog sa hari sa Edom hangtod nga naabo kini. 2 Busa sunogon ko ang Moab apil ang lig-ong mga bahin sa Keriot.[k] Mangamatay ang mga taga-Moab samtang nagasinggit ug nagapatingog sa budyong ang ilang mga kaaway nga nagasulong kanila. 3 Mamatay apil ang ilang hari ug ang tanan niyang mga opisyal. Ako, ang Ginoo, ang nagaingon niini.”

Ang Silot alang sa Nasod sa Juda

4 Mao kini ang gisulti sa Ginoo bahin sa Juda, “Tungod sa padayon nga pagpakasala sa mga taga-Juda, silotan ko gayod sila. Kay gisalikway nila ang akong kasugoan ug wala nila buhata ang mga tulumanon nga gihatag ko kanila. Gipahisalaag sila sa mga bakak nga pagtulon-an sa mga dios-dios nga gialagaran usab sa ilang mga katigulangan. 5 Busa sunogon ko ang Juda apil ang lig-ong mga bahin sa Jerusalem.”

6 Mao kini ang gisulti sa Ginoo bahin sa Israel,[l] “Tungod sa padayon nga pagpakasala sa mga taga-Israel, silotan ko gayod sila. Gibaligya nila isip mga ulipon ang mga tawo nga walay sala, tungod lang sa ilang utang. Gihimo nila kini sa mga kabos bisan ug usa lamang ka parisan nga sandalyas ang utang. 7 Gidaog-daog nila ang mga kabos ug wala nila sila hatagi ug hustisya. Anaa usab diha kanilay amahan ug anak nga lalaki nga nakighilawas sa usa lang ka babaye. Tungod niini gipasipalahan nila ang akong balaang ngalan. 8 Manghigda sila tapad sa matag halaran sinul-ob ang bisti nga gigarantiya kanila sa mga kabos.[m] Ug nagainom sila diha sa akong templo sa bino nga pinalit gikan sa multa nga gibayad sa mga kabos nga nakautang kanila. 9 Apan bisan pa niini, gilaglag ko gihapon ang mga Amorihanon alang kanila nga mga Israelinhon. Tag-as nga mga tawo ang mga Amorihanon (daw mga kahoyng sedro) ug lig-on nga daw mga kahoyng terebinto (tugas). Gipanglaglag ko sila hangtod nga wala nay nahibilin kanila. 10 Gipagawas ko usab ang mga katigulangan sa mga Israelinhon gikan sa Ehipto, ug sulod sa 40 ka tuig gigiyahan ko sila didto sa disyerto aron mapanag-iya nila ang yuta sa mga Amorihanon. 11 Gipili ko ang uban sa ilang mga kaliwat nga mahimong mga propeta ug mga Nazareo.[n] Dili ba tinuod man kini, mga Israelinhon? 12 Apan unsa ang inyong gihimo? Gipainom ninyo ug bino ang mga Nazareo[o] ug gimandoan ninyo ang mga propeta nga dili mosugilon sa akong mensahe. 13 Busa paminaw kamo! Pahamtangan ko kamo ug labihan kabug-at nga silot. Himuon ko kamong sama sa karomata nga nabungkag tungod sa sobra kabug-at sa gikarga nga abot. 14 Busa bisan kadtong kusog modagan kaninyo dili makaikyas, ang kusgan magluya, ug ang mga sundalo dili makaluwas sa ilang kaugalingon. 15 Bisan ang mga mamamana moatras. Ang mga sundalo nga kusog modagan dili makaikyas, ug ang mga tigkabayo dili makaluwas sa ilang kaugalingon. 16 Sa adlaw nga silotan ko kamo, bisan pa ang pinakaisog ninyong mga sundalo moikyas nga hubo. Ako, ang Ginoo, ang nagaingon niini.”

3 “Kamong mga taga-Israel, kansang mga katigulangan gipagawas ko gikan sa Ehipto, pamatia ninyo kining ginaingon ko batok kaninyo: 2 Sa tanang mga katawhan sa tibuok kalibotan kamo lang gayod ang akong gipili nga mahimong akong katawhan. Busa silotan ko kamo tungod sa tanan ninyong mga sala.”

Gitugot sa Dios ang Buluhaton sa mga Propeta

3 Magkuyog ba ang duha ka tawo sa pagpanglakaw kon wala sila magsabot? 4 Mongulob ba ang liyon sa lasang kon wala siyay tukbonon? Ug mongulob ba siya sa iyang tagoanan kon wala siyay nadakpan? 5 Malit-agan ba ang langgam kon wala butangi ug paon ang lit-ag? Mowitik ba ang lit-ag kon wala kini nalit-agan? 6 Dili ba mangurog sa kahadlok ang mga tawo kon patingogon na ang budyong sa pagpahibalo nga may mga kaaway nga misulong? Kon moabot ang kalamidad sa usa ka siyudad, dili ba ang Ginoo mao ang nagpadala niini?

7 Sa pagkatinuod, dili mohimo ang Ginoong Dios ug bisan unsa kon dili una niya kini ikapadayag sa iyang mga alagad nga mga propeta.

8 Kinsay dili mahadlok kon mongulob na ang liyon? Kinsa ba ang dili makapadayag sa mensahe sa Ginoong Dios kon siya na mismo ang magpadayag sa imoha?

Ang Hukom sa Dios Batok sa Samaria

9 Sultihi ninyo ang mga pangulo nga nagapuyo diha sa lig-ong mga bahin sa Ashdod ug sa Ehipto nga magtigom didto sa mga bungtod sa Samaria[p] ug tan-awon nila ang labihan nga kagubot ug ang mga pagpangdaog-daog nga nagakahitabo niana nga lungsod. 10-11 Dili sila kahibalong mobuhat ug matarong, ug ang lig-ong mga bahin sa ilang lungsod puno sa mga butang nga kinawat ug inilog. Busa mao kini ang giingon sa Ginoong Dios batok sa Samaria, “Sulongon kamo sa mga kaaway, ug gub-on nila ang inyong mga depensa. Kuhaon nila ang mga kabtangan diha sa lig-ong mga bahin sa inyong lungsod.”

12 Midugang pagsulti ang Ginoo, “Maingon nga luwason sa magbalantay ang duha ka tiil o usa ka dalunggan sa mananap nga gikaon sa liyon, salbaron usab ang mga Israelinhon nga nagapuyo sa Samaria. Apan wala silay madala gawas sa mga putol nga bahin sa ilang mga lantay ug katre.”[q]

13 Mipadayon pag-ingon ang Ginoong Dios, ang Dios nga Makagagahom, “Pamatia ninyo kining akong isulti ug isugilon ninyo kini sa mga kaliwat ni Jacob: 14 Sa adlaw nga silotan ko ang mga taga-Israel tungod sa ilang mga sala, gub-on ko ang mga halaran sa Betel.[r] Mangaputol ang mga sungay-sungay sa mga eskina sa halaran[s] ug mangahulog kini sa yuta. 15 Gub-on ko ang ilang mga balay nga para sa tingtugnaw ug mga balay nga para sa ting-init. Gub-on ko usab ang ilang mahalong mga balay. Busa daghan sa ilang mga balay ang mangaguba. Ako, ang Ginoo, ang nagaingon niini.”

1 The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa(A)—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake,(B) when Uzziah(C) was king of Judah and Jeroboam(D) son of Jehoash[a] was king of Israel.(E)

2 He said:

“The Lord roars(F) from Zion
    and thunders(G) from Jerusalem;(H)
the pastures of the shepherds dry up,
    and the top of Carmel(I) withers.”(J)

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

3 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Damascus,(K)
    even for four, I will not relent.(L)
Because she threshed Gilead
    with sledges having iron teeth,
4 I will send fire(M) on the house of Hazael(N)
    that will consume the fortresses(O) of Ben-Hadad.(P)
5 I will break down the gate(Q) of Damascus;
    I will destroy the king who is in[b] the Valley of Aven[c]
and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden.(R)
    The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,(S)”

10 I will send fire on the walls of Tyre
    that will consume her fortresses.(AF)”

11 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Edom,(AG)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because he pursued his brother with a sword(AH)
    and slaughtered the women of the land,
because his anger raged continually
    and his fury flamed unchecked,(AI)
12 I will send fire on Teman(AJ)
    that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah.(AK)”

13 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Ammon,(AL)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because he ripped open the pregnant women(AM) of Gilead
    in order to extend his borders,
14 I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah(AN)
    that will consume(AO) her fortresses
amid war cries(AP) on the day of battle,
    amid violent winds(AQ) on a stormy day.
15 Her king[e] will go into exile,
    he and his officials together,(AR)”
says the Lord.(AS)

2 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Moab,(AT)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because he burned to ashes(AU)
    the bones of Edom’s king,
2 I will send fire on Moab
    that will consume the fortresses of Kerioth.[f](AV)
Moab will go down in great tumult
    amid war cries(AW) and the blast of the trumpet.(AX)
3 I will destroy her ruler(AY)
    and kill all her officials with him,”(AZ)
says the Lord.(BA)

4 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Judah,(BB)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because they have rejected the law(BC) of the Lord
    and have not kept his decrees,(BD)
because they have been led astray(BE) by false gods,[g](BF)
    the gods[h] their ancestors followed,(BG)
5 I will send fire(BH) on Judah
    that will consume the fortresses(BI) of Jerusalem.(BJ)”

Judgment on Israel

6 This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Israel,
    even for four, I will not relent.(BK)
They sell the innocent for silver,
    and the needy for a pair of sandals.(BL)
7 They trample on the heads of the poor
    as on the dust of the ground
    and deny justice to the oppressed.
Father and son use the same girl
    and so profane my holy name.(BM)
8 They lie down beside every altar
    on garments taken in pledge.(BN)
In the house of their god
    they drink wine(BO) taken as fines.(BP)

9 “Yet I destroyed the Amorites(BQ) before them,
    though they were tall(BR) as the cedars
    and strong as the oaks.(BS)
I destroyed their fruit above
    and their roots(BT) below.
10 I brought you up out of Egypt(BU)
    and led(BV) you forty years in the wilderness(BW)
    to give you the land of the Amorites.(BX)

11 “I also raised up prophets(BY) from among your children
    and Nazirites(BZ) from among your youths.
Is this not true, people of Israel?”
declares the Lord.
12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine
    and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.(CA)

13 “Now then, I will crush you
    as a cart crushes when loaded with grain.(CB)
14 The swift will not escape,(CC)
    the strong(CD) will not muster their strength,
    and the warrior will not save his life.(CE)
15 The archer(CF) will not stand his ground,
    the fleet-footed soldier will not get away,
    and the horseman(CG) will not save his life.(CH)
16 Even the bravest warriors(CI)
    will flee naked on that day,”
declares the Lord.

Witnesses Summoned Against Israel

3 Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the Lord has spoken against you(CJ)—against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:(CK)

2 “You only have I chosen(CL)
    of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish(CM) you
    for all your sins.(CN)”

3 Do two walk together
    unless they have agreed to do so?
4 Does a lion roar(CO) in the thicket
    when it has no prey?(CP)
Does it growl in its den
    when it has caught nothing?
5 Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground
    when no bait(CQ) is there?
Does a trap spring up from the ground
    if it has not caught anything?
6 When a trumpet(CR) sounds in a city,
    do not the people tremble?
When disaster(CS) comes to a city,
    has not the Lord caused it?(CT)

7 Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing
    without revealing his plan(CU)
    to his servants the prophets.(CV)

8 The lion(CW) has roared(CX)—
    who will not fear?
The Sovereign Lord has spoken—
    who can but prophesy?(CY)

9 Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod(CZ)
    and to the fortresses of Egypt:
“Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria;(DA)
    see the great unrest within her
    and the oppression among her people.”

10 “They do not know how to do right,(DB)” declares the Lord,
    “who store up in their fortresses(DC)
    what they have plundered(DD) and looted.”

11 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“An enemy will overrun your land,
    pull down your strongholds
    and plunder your fortresses.(DE)”

12 This is what the Lord says:

“As a shepherd rescues from the lion’s(DF) mouth
    only two leg bones or a piece of an ear,
so will the Israelites living in Samaria be rescued,
    with only the head of a bed
    and a piece of fabric[i] from a couch.[j](DG)”

13 “Hear this and testify(DH) against the descendants of Jacob,” declares the Lord, the Lord God Almighty.

14 “On the day I punish(DI) Israel for her sins,
    I will destroy the altars of Bethel;(DJ)
the horns(DK) of the altar will be cut off
    and fall to the ground.
15 I will tear down the winter house(DL)
    along with the summer house;(DM)
the houses adorned with ivory(DN) will be destroyed
    and the mansions(DO) will be demolished,(DP)”
declares the Lord.(DQ)
