La cesta de fruta madura
8 Esto me mostró Dios el Señor: Había una cesta de fruta madura, 2 y él me preguntó:
—¿Qué ves, Amós?
—Una cesta de fruta madura —respondí.
Y me dijo el Señor:
—Ya Israel está maduro; no le voy a perdonar ni una vez más. 3 Ese día los cantos del palacio se volverán lamentos. Mucha gente morirá, y en silencio serán arrojados fuera sus cadáveres. El Señor lo afirma.
Se acerca el juicio de Israel
4 Oigan esto, ustedes que oprimen a los humildes y arruinan a los pobres del país; 5 ustedes que dicen: «¿Cuándo pasará la fiesta de la luna nueva, para que podamos vender el trigo? ¿Cuándo pasará el sábado, para que vendamos el grano a precios altos y usando medidas con trampa y pesas falsas? 6 ¡Arruinaremos a los pobres hasta que ellos mismos se nos vendan como esclavos para pagar sus deudas, aunque sólo deban un par de sandalias! ¡Venderemos hasta el desecho del trigo!» 7 El Señor ha jurado por la gloria de Jacob: «Nunca olvidaré lo que han hecho.»
8 ¿Y no habrá de temblar la tierra por todo esto?
¿No habrán de llorar todos sus habitantes?
¡La tierra subirá y bajará,
como suben y bajan las aguas del Nilo!
9 «Ese día —afirma el Señor—,
haré que se oculte el sol al mediodía,
y en pleno día cubriré de oscuridad la tierra.
10 Cambiaré las fiestas en llanto por los muertos,
y los cantos en lamentos fúnebres;
haré que ustedes se vistan de luto,
y que se rapen la cabeza en señal de dolor.
Llorarán como el que ha perdido a su único hijo,
y todo acabará en amargura.
11 Vienen días —afirma el Señor—
en los cuales mandaré hambre a la tierra;
no hambre de pan, ni sed de agua,
sino hambre de oír la palabra del Señor.
12 La gente andará errante,
buscando la palabra del Señor;
irán de un mar al otro mar,
y desde el norte y hasta el oriente,
pero no podrán encontrarla.
13 Hermosas muchachas y valientes muchachos
se desmayarán de sed ese día.
14 Los que juran por los ídolos de Samaria;
los que dicen: “Por vida de tu dios, oh Dan”,
“Por vida de los dioses de Beerseba”,
caerán para no levantarse más.»

A Basket of Ripe Fruit
8 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me:(A) a basket of ripe fruit. 2 “What do you see,(B) Amos?(C)” he asked.
“A basket(D) of ripe fruit,” I answered.
Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.(E)
3 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing.[a](F) Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!(G)”
5 saying,
“When will the New Moon(J) be over
that we may sell grain,
and the Sabbath be ended
that we may market(K) wheat?”(L)—
skimping on the measure,
boosting the price
and cheating(M) with dishonest scales,(N)
6 buying the poor(O) with silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
selling even the sweepings with the wheat.(P)
7 The Lord has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob:(Q) “I will never forget(R) anything they have done.(S)
8 “Will not the land tremble(T) for this,
and all who live in it mourn?
The whole land will rise like the Nile;
it will be stirred up and then sink
like the river of Egypt.(U)
9 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord,
“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.(V)
10 I will turn your religious festivals(W) into mourning
and all your singing into weeping.(X)
I will make all of you wear sackcloth(Y)
and shave(Z) your heads.
I will make that time like mourning for an only son(AA)
and the end of it like a bitter day.(AB)
11 “The days are coming,”(AC) declares the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
but a famine(AD) of hearing the words of the Lord.(AE)
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it.(AF)
