El cesto con fruta de verano
8 El Señor también me hizo ver esto: Me mostró un cesto lleno con fruta de verano,[a] 2 y me dijo:
«¿Qué ves, Amós?»
Yo respondí:
«Veo un cesto con fruta de verano.»
Entonces el Señor me dijo:
«Ha llegado el fin[b] de mi pueblo Israel. No voy a pasarle una más. 3 Cuando llegue el día, en el palacio habrá llanto y no cantos. Por todas partes abundarán los cadáveres, los cuales serán arrojados en silencio.»
—Palabra del Señor.
Se acerca el juicio contra Israel
4 Oigan esto, ustedes, los que explotan a los menesterosos y dejan en la ruina a los pobres de la tierra. 5 Ustedes dicen:
«¿Cuándo pasará la fiesta de luna nueva? ¡Entonces podremos vender el trigo! ¿Y cuándo pasará el día de reposo, para que abramos los graneros? ¡Achicaremos la medida, subiremos el precio, y adulteraremos la balanza! 6 ¡Así podremos comprar a los pobres por dinero, y a los necesitados a cambio de un par de zapatos! ¡Hasta los desechos del trigo podremos vender!»
7 Pero el Señor ha jurado por la gloria de Jacob:
«¡No voy a olvidar ninguna de sus malas acciones!»
8 ¿Y no habrá de estremecerse la tierra por todo esto? ¿Y no habrán de llorar todos sus habitantes? ¡Toda ella subirá como un río! ¡Se encrespará y se hundirá como el río de Egipto!
9 «Cuando llegue ese día, haré que el sol se ponga a mediodía. El día estará claro, pero yo cubriré de tinieblas la tierra.
—Palabra del Señor.
10 »Convertiré sus fiestas en velorios, y sus cantos de alegría en cantos fúnebres. Haré que todos se vistan de luto, que se rapen la cabeza, y que lloren como si se hubiera muerto su único hijo. El final será un día de amargura.
11 »Vienen días en que habrá en la tierra una gran hambre, pero no de pan ni de agua, sino hambre de oír mi palabra.
—Palabra del Señor.
12 »Andarán errantes de mar a mar, y del norte hasta el oriente, en busca de mi palabra, pero no la hallarán.
13 »Cuando llegue ese día, la sed hará desfallecer a las doncellas más hermosas y a los jóvenes más fornidos. 14 Esos que juran por el pecado de Samaria, y dicen: “¡Va por tu Dios, Dan!”, y: “¡Va por el camino de Berseba!”, caerán para no volver a levantarse.»

Quarta visione: il canestro di frutta matura
8 Ecco ciò che mi fece vedere il Signore Dio:
era un canestro di frutta matura.
2 Egli domandò: «Che vedi Amos?».
Io risposi: «Un canestro di frutta matura».
Il Signore mi disse:
E' maturata la fine per il mio popolo, Israele;
non gli perdonerò più.
3 In quel giorno urleranno le cantanti del tempio,
oracolo del Signore Dio.
Numerosi i cadaveri, gettati dovunque. Silenzio!
Contro i fraudolenti e gli sfruttatori
4 Ascoltate questo, voi che calpestate il povero
e sterminate gli umili del paese,
5 voi che dite: «Quando sarà passato il novilunio
e si potrà vendere il grano?
E il sabato, perché si possa smerciare il frumento,
diminuendo le misure e aumentando il siclo
e usando bilance false,
6 per comprare con denaro gli indigenti
e il povero per un paio di sandali?
Venderemo anche lo scarto del grano».
7 Il Signore lo giura per il vanto di Giacobbe:
certo non dimenticherò mai le loro opere.
8 Non forse per questo trema la terra,
sono in lutto tutti i suoi abitanti,
si solleva tutta come il Nilo,
si agita e si riabbassa come il fiume d'Egitto?
Annunzio di un misterioro castigo: oscurità e lutto
9 In quel giorno - oracolo del Signore Dio -
farò tramontare il sole a mezzodì
e oscurerò la terra in pieno giorno!
10 Cambierò le vostre feste in lutto
e tutti i vostri canti in lamento:
farò vestire ad ogni fianco il sacco,
renderò calva ogni testa:
ne farò come un lutto per un figlio unico
e la sua fine sarà come un giorno d'amarezza.
Fame e sete della parola di Dio
11 Ecco, verranno giorni,
- dice il Signore Dio -
in cui manderò la fame nel paese,
non fame di pane, né sete di acqua,
ma d'ascoltare la parola del Signore.
12 Allora andranno errando da un mare all'altro
e vagheranno da settentrione a oriente,
per cercare la parola del Signore,
ma non la troveranno.
Nuovo annunzio del castigo
13 In quel giorno appassiranno le belle fanciulle
e i giovani per la sete.
14 Quelli che giurano per il peccato di Samaria
e dicono: «Per la vita del tuo dio, Dan!»
oppure: «Per la vita del tuo diletto, Bersabea!»,
cadranno senza più rialzarsi!

A Basket of Ripe Fruit
8 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me:(A) a basket of ripe fruit. 2 “What do you see,(B) Amos?(C)” he asked.
“A basket(D) of ripe fruit,” I answered.
Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.(E)
3 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing.[a](F) Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!(G)”
5 saying,
“When will the New Moon(J) be over
that we may sell grain,
and the Sabbath be ended
that we may market(K) wheat?”(L)—
skimping on the measure,
boosting the price
and cheating(M) with dishonest scales,(N)
6 buying the poor(O) with silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
selling even the sweepings with the wheat.(P)
7 The Lord has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob:(Q) “I will never forget(R) anything they have done.(S)
8 “Will not the land tremble(T) for this,
and all who live in it mourn?
The whole land will rise like the Nile;
it will be stirred up and then sink
like the river of Egypt.(U)
9 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord,
“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.(V)
10 I will turn your religious festivals(W) into mourning
and all your singing into weeping.(X)
I will make all of you wear sackcloth(Y)
and shave(Z) your heads.
I will make that time like mourning for an only son(AA)
and the end of it like a bitter day.(AB)
11 “The days are coming,”(AC) declares the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
but a famine(AD) of hearing the words of the Lord.(AE)
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it.(AF)
