A Basket of Ripe Fruit
8 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me:(A) a basket of ripe fruit. 2 “What do you see,(B) Amos?(C)” he asked.
“A basket(D) of ripe fruit,” I answered.
Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.(E)
3 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing.[a](F) Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!(G)”
5 saying,
“When will the New Moon(J) be over
that we may sell grain,
and the Sabbath be ended
that we may market(K) wheat?”(L)—
skimping on the measure,
boosting the price
and cheating(M) with dishonest scales,(N)
6 buying the poor(O) with silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
selling even the sweepings with the wheat.(P)
7 The Lord has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob:(Q) “I will never forget(R) anything they have done.(S)
8 “Will not the land tremble(T) for this,
and all who live in it mourn?
The whole land will rise like the Nile;
it will be stirred up and then sink
like the river of Egypt.(U)
9 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord,
“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.(V)
10 I will turn your religious festivals(W) into mourning
and all your singing into weeping.(X)
I will make all of you wear sackcloth(Y)
and shave(Z) your heads.
I will make that time like mourning for an only son(AA)
and the end of it like a bitter day.(AB)
11 “The days are coming,”(AC) declares the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine through the land—
not a famine of food or a thirst for water,
but a famine(AD) of hearing the words of the Lord.(AE)
12 People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from north to east,
searching for the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it.(AF)

Cuarta visión: la fruta madura
8 El Señor Dios me mostró una canasta de frutas maduras 2 y me dijo:
— ¿Qué ves, Amós?
Yo respondí:
“Una canasta con fruta madura”.
El Señor me dijo:
“Mi pueblo Israel está maduro”,
no le toleraré [un pecado] más.
3 Ese día —oráculo del Señor Dios—
los cantos de palacio se volverán lamentos,
y serán innumerables los cadáveres
que serán desparramados en silencio.
Contra los explotadores
4 Escuchen esto, los que aplastan al pobre y quieren eliminar a la gente humilde del país 5 diciendo: “¿Cuándo pasará la fiesta del novilunio para que podamos vender el cereal, y el sábado para dar salida al trigo? Usaremos medidas trucadas, aumentaremos el peso del siclo y falsearemos las balanzas. 6 Compraremos al indigente por dinero y al pobre a cambio de un par de sandalias; incluso haremos negocio con el salvado del trigo”. 7 Pues bien, el Señor ha jurado por el honor de Jacob que nunca se olvidará de esas acciones.
8 ¿No se va a estremecer la tierra
a la vista de todo esto?
¿No harán sus habitantes duelo?
Toda ella crecerá como el Nilo,
crecerá y decrecerá como el río de Egipto.
Un terrible castigo
9 Aquel día —oráculo del Señor Dios—
haré que el sol se ponga a mediodía
y que, a pleno sol, se oscurezca la tierra.
10 Convertiré en duelo las fiestas de ustedes,
en lamentaciones sus cánticos.
Haré que todos se vistan de sayal
y tengan que raparse la cabeza.
Será como llanto por el hijo único
con un final preñado de amargura.
11 Vendrán días —oráculo del Señor Dios—
en que enviaré el hambre a este país;
no será hambre de pan ni sed de agua,
sino de oír la palabra del Señor.
12 Andarán errantes de mar a mar,
desde el septentrión hasta el oriente;
buscarán la palabra del Señor,
pero no lograrán encontrarla.
13 Aquel día desfallecerán de sed
las hermosas muchachas y los jóvenes;
14 y también los que juran
por el ídolo de Samaría, diciendo:
“Lo juro, Dan, por quien adoras como dios;
y lo juro también, Berseba, por tu dios”.
Caerán a tierra y no se levantarán.
