Lamentación por Israel
5 Escuchen, israelitas, esta palabra,
esta lamentación que entono por ustedes:
2 Ha caído Israel, la doncella,
y ya no se levantará más;
yace por tierra y nadie la levanta.
3 Porque así habla a Israel, el Señor Dios:
De la ciudad que reclute mil soldados,
no quedarán más que cien;
y de la que se recluten cien en Israel,
no quedarán más que diez.
4 Pues esto dice el Señor a Israel:
Búsquenme si quieren vivir.
5 No busquen nada en Betel,
no se dirijan a Guilgal,
no se encaminen a Berseba;
Guilgal será deportada sin remedio
y Betel quedará reducida a la nada.
6 Busquen al Señor y tendrán vida;
no sea que prenda fuego a la casa de José
sin que haya en Betel quien lo apague.
7 ¡Ay de los que cambian
el derecho en amargura
y arrastran por tierra la justicia!
8 Él es quien ha creado el Orión y las Pléyades,
el que cambia en amanecer la oscuridad
y hace que el día dé paso a la noche;
él es quien convoca las aguas del mar
y las derrama sobre la superficie de la tierra:
su nombre es el Señor.
9 Él es quien acarrea la ruina a los fuertes
y hace que la fortaleza se desplome.
10 Mas ellos odian a quien pide un juicio justo
y detestan al que testifica con verdad.
11 Y porque pisotean al indigente
exigiéndole el impuesto del grano,
no habitarán esas casas construidas
sirviéndose de piedras talladas,
ni tampoco beberán el vino
de los selectos viñedos que plantaron.
12 Conozco sus muchas rebeldías
y sus innumerables pecados:
aplastan al inocente, aceptan sobornos,
atropellan al desvalido en el tribunal.
13 Por eso, guarde silencio el prudente,
porque estamos en tiempo de desgracia.
14 Busquen el bien y no el mal;
así vivirán y el Señor, Dios del universo,
estará con ustedes, según dicen.
15 Detesten el mal y amen el bien;
implanten el derecho en el tribunal
y quizá el Señor, Dios del universo,
tenga compasión del resto de José.
16 Así habla el Señor, Dios del universo:
En todas las plazas habrá lamentos,
en todas las calles, gritos de dolor;
será convocado a duelo el campesino,
y las plañideras para que se lamenten.
17 En todas las viñas habrá llanto
cuando yo pase entre ustedes,
—dice el Señor—.
El día del Señor
18 ¡Ay de los que añoran el día del Señor!
¿De qué les servirá el día del Señor
si será para ustedes tinieblas y no luz?
19 Les pasará como a quien huye de un león
y se topa de pronto con un oso;
o como al que entra en su casa,
apoya la mano en la pared
y lo muerde una serpiente.
20 Será tinieblas y no luz el día del Señor,
densa oscuridad sin claridad alguna.
Contra el culto vacío
21 Detesto y aborrezco las fiestas de ustedes,
me disgustan sus asambleas.
22 Me presentan sus holocaustos,
sus ofrendas que no acepto;
me sacrifican novillos cebados,
pero yo los aparto de mi vista.
23 Alejen de mí el ruido de los cánticos;
me molesta la melodía de sus arpas.
24 Que fluya el derecho como agua
y la justicia como un río inagotable.
25 ¿Me presentaron acaso, israelitas,
ofrendas y sacrificios en el desierto,
los cuarenta años que estuvieron en él?
26 Cargarán con Sacut y Keván,
las imágenes de esos dioses astrales
que ustedes se han fabricado,
27 cuando yo los deporte
más allá de Damasco,
—dice el Señor, cuyo nombre
es Dios del universo—.

Dios Habla Hoy
Llamado a volverse a Dios
5 Oigan mis palabras, israelitas;
escuchen el lamento que entono contra ustedes:
2 La bella y pura Israel ha caído;
cayó para no levantarse más.
Quedó tendida sobre su propio suelo,
y no hay quien la levante.
3 Así dice Dios el Señor a los israelitas:
«Si una ciudad manda mil hombres a la guerra,
sólo cien volverán con vida;
y si una ciudad manda cien,
sólo diez regresarán.»
4 Así dice el Señor a los israelitas:
«Acudan a mí, y vivirán.
5 No acudan a Betel,
no vayan a Guilgal
ni pasen por Beerseba,
porque Guilgal irá sin remedio al destierro
y Betel quedará convertida en ruinas.»
6 Acudan al Señor, y vivirán;
de otro modo él enviará fuego sobre el reino de Israel,
y no habrá en Betel quien lo apague.
7 ¡Ay de ustedes, que convierten la justicia en amargura
y arrojan por los suelos el derecho!
8-9 El Señor, que hizo las Pléyades y el Orión,
es quien convierte la noche en día
y el día en noche oscura;
quien llama a las aguas del mar
y las derrama sobre la tierra;
quien desencadena la ruina sobre la fortaleza
y la hace llegar sobre la fortificación.
El Señor, ése es su nombre.
10 ¡Ay de ustedes, que odian al defensor de la justicia
y detestan al testigo honrado!
11 Puesto que pisotean al pobre
y le cobran impuestos de trigo,
no podrán vivir en las casas de piedra que han construido,
ni beberán el vino de los viñedos que han plantado.
12 Yo conozco sus muchas maldades
y sus pecados sin fin:
oprimen al justo, reciben soborno
y en los tribunales hacen que el pobre pierda su causa.
13 Por eso el que es sabio se calla,
porque el tiempo es malo.
14 Busquen el bien y no el mal, y vivirán;
así será verdad lo que ustedes dicen:
que el Señor, el Dios todopoderoso, está con ustedes.
15 ¡Odien el mal! ¡Amen el bien!
Asegúrense de que en los tribunales se haga justicia;
quizá entonces el Señor, el Dios todopoderoso,
tendrá piedad de los sobrevivientes de Israel.
16 Así dice el Señor, el Dios todopoderoso:
«En todas las plazas habrá llanto,
en todas las calles habrá gritos de dolor.
Llamarán al duelo a los campesinos,
y a los llorones profesionales al llanto.
17 En todos los viñedos llorarán
cuando yo venga a castigarlos.»
Lo dice el Señor.
18 ¡Ay de los que ansían que llegue el día del Señor!
¿Saben cómo va a ser para ustedes ese día?
Será día de oscuridad, y no de luz.
19 Será como cuando uno huye de un león
y se topa con un oso,
o como cuando uno entra en su casa,
se apoya en la pared,
y lo muerde una culebra.
20 Sí, el día del Señor será de oscuridad, y no de luz;
de densa oscuridad, sin claridad ninguna.
21 «Odio y desprecio las fiestas religiosas que ustedes celebran;
me disgustan sus reuniones solemnes.
22 No quiero los holocaustos que ofrecen en mi honor,
ni sus ofrendas de cereales;
no aceptaré los gordos becerros
de sus sacrificios de reconciliación.
23 ¡Alejen de mí el ruido de sus cantos!
¡No quiero oír el sonido de sus arpas!
24 Pero que fluya como agua la justicia,
y la honradez como un manantial inagotable.
25 »Israelitas, ¿acaso en los cuarenta años del desierto me ofrecieron ustedes sacrificios y ofrendas? 26 Ahora, sin embargo, tendrán que cargar con su rey Sicut y su estrella Quiiún, imágenes de dioses que ustedes mismos se han hecho. 27 Los lanzaré a ustedes al destierro, más allá de Damasco.» Lo dice el Señor, el Dios todopoderoso. Ése es su nombre.

5 Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.
2 The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.
3 For thus saith the Lord God; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.
4 For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:
5 But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.
6 Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.
7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,
8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name:
9 That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.
10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.
11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.
13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.
14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.
16 Therefore the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.
17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the Lord.
18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.
19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
20 Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.
22 Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.
24 But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
25 Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, whose name is The God of hosts.

A Lament for Israel
5 Hear this word which I (A)take up against you, a lamentation, O house of Israel:
2 The virgin of Israel has fallen;
She will rise no more.
She lies forsaken on her land;
There is no one to raise her up.
3 For thus says the Lord God:
“The city that goes out by a thousand
Shall have a hundred left,
And that which goes out by a hundred
Shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”
A Call to Repentance
4 For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:
(B)“Seek Me (C)and live;
5 But do not seek (D)Bethel,
Nor enter Gilgal,
Nor pass over to (E)Beersheba;
For Gilgal shall surely go into captivity,
And (F)Bethel shall come to nothing.
6 (G)Seek the Lord and live,
Lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph,
And devour it,
With no one to quench it in Bethel—
7 You who (H)turn justice to wormwood,
And lay righteousness to rest in the earth!”
8 He made the (I)Pleiades and Orion;
He turns the shadow of death into morning
(J)And makes the day dark as night;
He (K)calls for the waters of the sea
And pours them out on the face of the earth;
(L)The Lord is His name.
9 He [a]rains ruin upon the strong,
So that fury comes upon the fortress.
10 (M)They hate the one who rebukes in the gate,
And they (N)abhor the one who speaks uprightly.
11 (O)Therefore, because you [b]tread down the poor
And take grain [c]taxes from him,
Though (P)you have built houses of hewn stone,
Yet you shall not dwell in them;
You have planted [d]pleasant vineyards,
But you shall not drink wine from them.
12 For I (Q)know your manifold transgressions
And your mighty sins:
(R)Afflicting the just and taking bribes;
(S)Diverting the poor from justice at the gate.
13 Therefore (T)the prudent keep silent at that time,
For it is an evil time.
14 Seek good and not evil,

So the Lord God of hosts will be with you,
(U)As you have spoken.
15 (V)Hate evil, love good;
Establish justice in the gate.
(W)It may be that the Lord God of hosts
Will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
The Day of the Lord
16 Therefore the Lord God of hosts, the Lord, says this:
“There shall be wailing in all streets,
And they shall say in all the highways,
‘Alas! Alas!’
They shall call the farmer to mourning,
(X)And skillful lamenters to wailing.
17 In all vineyards there shall be wailing,
For (Y)I will pass through you,”
Says the Lord.
18 (Z)Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!
For what good is (AA)the day of the Lord to you?
It will be darkness, and not light.
19 It will be (AB)as though a man fled from a lion,
And a bear met him!
Or as though he went into the house,
Leaned his hand on the wall,
And a serpent bit him!
20 Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light?
Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it?
21 “I(AC) hate, I despise your feast days,
And (AD)I do not savor your sacred assemblies.
22 (AE)Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings,
I will not accept them,
Nor will I regard your fattened peace offerings.
23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs,
For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments.
24 (AF)But let justice run down like water,
And righteousness like a mighty stream.
25 “Did(AG) you offer Me sacrifices and offerings
In the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
26 You also carried [e]Sikkuth[f] (AH)your king
And Chiun, your idols,
The star of your gods,
Which you made for yourselves.
27 Therefore I will send you into captivity (AI)beyond Damascus,”
Says the Lord, (AJ)whose name is the God of hosts.
