27 Le commandant se rendit aussitôt auprès de Paul et lui demanda : Dis-moi, es-tu vraiment citoyen romain ?
– Oui, répondit-il.
28 – Moi, reprit le commandant, j’ai dû payer très cher pour acquérir ce titre.
– Et moi, dit Paul, je le tiens de naissance.
29 Aussitôt, ceux qui allaient le torturer le laissèrent. Le commandant lui-même commença à s’inquiéter à l’idée qu’il avait bel et bien fait enchaîner un citoyen romain.

English Standard Version
27 So the tribune came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” And he said, “Yes.” 28 The tribune answered, “I bought this citizenship for a large sum.” Paul said, “But I am a citizen by birth.” 29 So those who were about (A)to examine him withdrew from him immediately, and the tribune also (B)was afraid, (C)for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that (D)he had bound him.
