12 While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack against Paul and brought him to the tribunal.(A) 13 “This man,” they said, “is persuading people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.”
14 As Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of wrongdoing or of a serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to put up with you Jews. 15 But if these are questions about words, names, and your own law, see to it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of such things.”(B) 16 So he drove them from the tribunal. 17 And they all[a] seized Sosthenes,(C) the leader of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the tribunal, but none of these things mattered to Gallio.

12 While Gallio was proconsul(A) of Achaia,(B) the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the place of judgment. 13 “This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.”
14 Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to them, “If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. 15 But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law(C)—settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things.” 16 So he drove them off. 17 Then the crowd there turned on Sosthenes(D) the synagogue leader(E) and beat him in front of the proconsul; and Gallio showed no concern whatever.

14 And when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of wrongdoing or wicked crimes, O Jews, there would be reason why I should bear with you. 15 But if it is a (A)question of words and names and your own law, look to it yourselves; for I do not want to be a judge of such matters.” 16 And he drove them from the judgment seat. 17 Then [b]all the Greeks took (B)Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. But Gallio took no notice of these things.
