18 (A)“What profit is an idol

For its maker trusts in his own creation

Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,

The Lord Will Punish Israel

Rejoice not, O Israel!
    Exult not like the peoples;
(A)for you have played the whore, forsaking your God.

The Folly of Idolatry

(A)All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame. 10 (B)Who fashions a god or casts an idol that is profitable for nothing? 11 (C)Behold, all his companions shall be put to shame, and the craftsmen are only human. Let them all assemble, let them stand forth. They shall be terrified; they shall be put to shame together.

12 (D)The ironsmith takes a cutting tool and works it over the coals. He fashions it with hammers and works it with his strong arm. He becomes hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no water and is faint. 13 The carpenter stretches a line; he marks it out with a pencil.[a] He shapes it with planes and marks it with a compass. (E)He shapes it into the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house. 14 (F)He cuts down cedars, or he chooses a cypress tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it. 15 Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it. 16 Half of it he burns in the fire. Over the half he eats meat; he roasts it and is satisfied. Also he warms himself and says, “Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire!” 17 And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, and falls down to it and worships it. (G)He prays to it and says, “Deliver me, for you are my god!”

18 They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand. 19 No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, “Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an (H)abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?” 20 (I)He feeds on (J)ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, “Is there not (K)a lie in my right hand?”

12 Then the Lord said to me, (A)‘Arise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you have brought from Egypt have acted corruptly. They have (B)turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them; they have made themselves a metal image.’

The Golden Calf

13 (C)“Furthermore, the Lord said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, it is (D)a stubborn people. 14 (E)Let me alone, that I may destroy them and (F)blot out their name from under heaven. And (G)I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’ 15 (H)So I turned and came down from the mountain, and (I)the mountain was burning with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And (J)I looked, and behold, you had sinned against the Lord your God. You had made yourselves a golden[a] calf. (K)You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes. 18 Then I (L)lay prostrate before the Lord (M)as before, forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all the sin that you had committed, (N)in doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke him to anger.

17 When (A)Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.” 18 But he said, “It is not the sound of (B)shouting for victory, or the sound of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing that I hear.” 19 And as soon as he came near the camp and (C)saw the calf and the dancing, Moses' anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20 He took the calf that they had made and burned it with fire and ground it to powder and scattered it on the water and made the people of Israel drink it.

So Aaron said to them, “Take off the (A)rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. (B)And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden[a] calf. And they said, (C)“These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron (D)made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.” And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And (E)the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up (F)to play.

And the Lord said to Moses, (G)“Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have (H)corrupted themselves. They have turned aside quickly out of the way that (I)I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’”
