¹¹ Now there came a famine throughout Egypt and Canaan and great suffering, and our ancestors could find no food.^(A)

⁵⁴ and the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in every country, but throughout the land of Egypt there was bread.^{(A) 55} When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; what he says to you, do.” ⁵⁶ And since the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened all the storehouses^[a] and sold to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.^{(B) 57} Moreover, all the world came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine became severe throughout the world.

The Famine in Egypt

¹³ Now there was no food in all the land, for the famine was very severe. The land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine.^{(A) 14} Joseph collected all the money to be found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan in exchange for the grain that they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.^{(B) 15} When the money from the land of Egypt and from the land of Canaan was spent, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us food! Why should we die before your eyes? For our money is gone.”^(C)

¹¹ I will provide for you there, since there are five more years of famine to come, so that you and your household and all that you have will not come to poverty.’

⁵ And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.^{(A) 6} For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest.

The Brothers Come Again, Bringing Benjamin

43 Now the famine was severe in the land.^(A)

⁵ Thus the sons of Israel were among the people who came to buy grain, for the famine had reached the land of Canaan.^(A)
