Seven Chosen to Serve
6 Now during those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. 2 And the twelve called together the whole community of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables.[a] 3 Therefore, friends,[b] select from among yourselves seven men of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task, 4 while we, for our part, will devote ourselves to prayer and to serving the word.” 5 What they said pleased the whole community, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. 6 They had these men stand before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.
7 The word of God continued to spread; the number of the disciples increased greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

6 (A)In quei giorni, moltiplicandosi il numero dei discepoli, sorse un mormorio da parte degli Ellenisti[a] contro gli Ebrei[b], perché le loro vedove erano trascurate nell’assistenza quotidiana. 2 I dodici, convocata la moltitudine dei discepoli, dissero: «Non è conveniente che noi lasciamo la Parola di Dio per servire alle mense. 3 Pertanto, fratelli, cercate di trovare fra di voi sette uomini, dei quali si abbia buona testimonianza, pieni di Spirito [Santo] e di sapienza, ai quali affideremo questo incarico. 4 Quanto a noi, continueremo a dedicarci alla preghiera e al ministero della Parola».
5 Questa proposta piacque a tutta la moltitudine; ed elessero Stefano, uomo pieno di fede e di Spirito Santo, Filippo, Procoro, Nicanore, Timone, Parmena e Nicola, proselito[c] di Antiochia. 6 Li presentarono agli apostoli, i quali, dopo aver pregato, imposero loro le mani.

6 In jenen Tagen aber, als die Zahl der Jünger wuchs, entstand ein Murren der Hellenisten gegen die Hebräer,[a] weil ihre Witwen bei der täglichen Hilfeleistung übersehen wurden.
2 Da beriefen die Zwölf die Menge der Jünger zusammen und sprachen: Es ist nicht gut, dass wir das Wort Gottes vernachlässigen, um bei den Tischen zu dienen.
3 Darum, ihr Brüder, seht euch nach sieben Männern aus eurer Mitte um, die ein gutes Zeugnis haben und voll Heiligen Geistes und Weisheit sind; die wollen wir für diesen Dienst einsetzen,
4 wir aber wollen beständig im Gebet und im Dienst des Wortes bleiben!
5 Und das Wort gefiel der ganzen Menge, und sie erwählten Stephanus, einen Mann voll Glaubens und Heiligen Geistes, und Philippus und Prochorus und Nikanor und Timon und Parmenas und Nikolaus, einen Proselyten[b] aus Antiochia.

6 A cette époque-là, comme le nombre des disciples ne cessait d’augmenter, des tensions surgirent entre les disciples juifs de culture grecque et ceux qui étaient nés en Israël : les premiers se plaignaient de ce que leurs veuves étaient défavorisées lors des distributions quotidiennes[a].
2 Alors les douze apôtres réunirent l’ensemble des disciples et leur dirent : Il ne serait pas légitime que nous arrêtions de proclamer la Parole de Dieu pour nous occuper des distributions. 3 C’est pourquoi, frères, choisissez parmi vous sept hommes réputés dignes de confiance, remplis du Saint-Esprit et de sagesse. Nous les chargerons de ce travail. 4 Cela nous permettra de nous consacrer à la prière et au service de l’enseignement.
5 Cette proposition convint à tous les disciples ; ils élurent Etienne, un homme plein de foi et d’Esprit Saint, ainsi que Philippe, Prochore, Nicanor, Timon, Parménas et Nicolas[b], un non-Juif originaire d’Antioche qui s’était converti au judaïsme. 6 Ils les présentèrent aux apôtres qui prièrent pour eux et leur imposèrent les mains.
7 La Parole de Dieu se répandait toujours plus. Le nombre des disciples s’accroissait beaucoup à Jérusalem. Et même de nombreux prêtres obéissaient à la foi.
