Choosing of the Seven
6 Now [a]at this time, as the (A)disciples were (B)increasing in number, a complaint developed on the part of the [b](C)Hellenistic Jews against the native (D)Hebrews, because their (E)widows were being overlooked in (F)the daily serving of food. 2 So the twelve summoned the [c]congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. 3 Instead, (G)brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, (H)full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. 4 But we will (I)devote ourselves to prayer and to the [d]ministry of the word.” 5 The [e]announcement found approval with the whole [f]congregation; and they chose (J)Stephen, a man (K)full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and (L)Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and [g]Nicolas, a [h](M)proselyte from (N)Antioch. 6 And they brought these men before the apostles; and after (O)praying, they (P)laid their hands on them.
7 (Q)The word of God kept spreading; and (R)the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to (S)the faith.
8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great (T)wonders and [i]signs among the people. 9 But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both (U)Cyrenians and (V)Alexandrians, and some from (W)Cilicia and [j](X)Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen. 10 But they were unable to [k]cope with his wisdom and the Spirit by whom he was speaking. 11 Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and they (Y)came up to him and dragged him away, and brought him [l]before (Z)the [m]Council. 13 They put forward (AA)false witnesses who said, “This man does not stop [n]speaking against this (AB)holy place and the Law; 14 for we have heard him say that (AC)this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and change (AD)the customs which Moses handed down to us.” 15 And all who were sitting in the [o](AE)Council stared at him, and they saw his face, which was like the face of an angel.

6 Trong lúc ấy số môn đồ gia tăng thêm nhiều, những tín hữu Do-thái chịu ảnh hưởng của văn hóa Hy-lạp[a] phàn nàn phản đối những tín hữu Do-thái bản xứ, vì các góa phụ của họ đã bị bỏ lơ trong việc cấp phát thực phẩm hằng ngày.
2 Mười hai sứ đồ triệu tập toàn thể môn đồ lại và nói, “Thật là không đúng khi chúng tôi bỏ bê việc giảng dạy Lời Ðức Chúa Trời để lo việc cấp phát thực phẩm.[b] 3 Vậy thưa anh chị em, xin hãy chọn trong vòng anh chị em bảy người có tiếng tốt, đầy dẫy Ðức Thánh Linh, và khôn ngoan, để chúng tôi trao nhiệm vụ này cho họ, 4 còn chúng tôi phải chuyên tâm vào sự cầu nguyện và chức vụ giảng dạy Lời Chúa.”[c]
5 Ðề nghị ấy được toàn thể hội chúng tán thành, và họ chọn Ê-tiên, một người đầy đức tin và Ðức Thánh Linh, cùng với Phi-líp, Pơ-rô-khô-ru, Ni-ca-nô, Ti-môn, Pạc-mê-na, và Ni-cô-la là người ngoại quốc quê ở Thành An-ti-ốt đã theo Do-thái Giáo. 6 Họ đưa bảy người ấy đến trình diện trước các sứ đồ; các sứ đồ đặt tay trên họ và cầu nguyện cho họ.
7 Ðạo[d] Ðức Chúa Trời tiếp tục phát triển mạnh mẽ; số môn đồ tại Giê-ru-sa-lem tăng lên rất nhiều, một số đông tư tế cũng vâng phục đức tin.
Ê-tiên Bị Bắt
8 Bấy giờ Ê-tiên được đầy ơn và quyền năng; ông làm những dấu kỳ và những phép lạ lớn trong dân.
9 Khi ấy có mấy người thuộc hội đường của hội gọi là “Hội của Những Người Ðược Tự Do,” gồm những người Do-thái sinh quán ở Sy-ren và A-léc-xan-ria, cùng những người Do-thái sinh quán ở Si-li-si-a và A-si-a, nổi lên tranh luận với Ê-tiên. 10 Nhưng họ không chống nổi sự khôn ngoan và Ðức Thánh Linh mà ông cậy vào để nói. 11 Vì thế họ ngầm xúi giục một số người phao vu rằng, “Chúng tôi có nghe ông ấy nói những lời xúc phạm đến Môi-se và Ðức Chúa Trời.”
12 Họ sách động quần chúng, các trưởng lão, và các thầy dạy giáo luật, rồi họ xông vào bắt Ê-tiên và giải ông đến trước Hội Ðồng. 13 Họ cũng sắp đặt những kẻ làm chứng dối đứng ra tố rằng, “Tên này không ngừng nói những lời chống lại nơi thánh này và Luật Pháp, 14 vì chúng tôi có nghe hắn nói rằng ông Jesus ở Na-xa-rét ấy sẽ phá sạch nơi đây và sẽ thay đổi những tục lệ Môi-se đã truyền lại cho chúng ta.”
15 Khi ấy tất cả cử tọa của Hội Ðồng đều chăm chú nhìn vào Ê-tiên. Họ thấy mặt ông giống như mặt của một vị thiên sứ.

Seven Chosen to Serve
6 Now in those days, (A)when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the (B)Hellenists,[a] because their widows were neglected (C)in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, (D)“It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, (E)seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this (F)business; 4 but we (G)will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, (H)a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and (I)Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and (J)Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and (K)when they had prayed, (L)they laid hands on them.
7 Then (M)the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many (N)of the priests were obedient to the faith.
Stephen Accused of Blasphemy
8 And Stephen, full of [b]faith and power, did great (O)wonders and signs among the people. 9 Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. 10 And (P)they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. 11 (Q)Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council. 13 They also set up false witnesses who said, “This man does not cease to speak [c]blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; 14 (R)for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.” 15 And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.
