Fate of Ananias and Sapphira
5 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and (A)kept back some of the [a]proceeds for himself, with his wife’s [b]full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he (B)laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has (C)Satan filled your heart to lie (D)to the Holy Spirit and to (E)keep back some of the [c]proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not [d]under your control? Why is it that you have [e]conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but (F)to God.” 5 And as he heard these words, Ananias (G)collapsed and [f]died; and (H)great fear came over all who heard about it. 6 The young men got up and (I)covered him up, and after carrying him out, they buried him.
7 Now an interval of about three hours elapsed, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter responded to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land (J)for [g]this price?” And she said, “Yes, for [h]that price.” 9 Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to (K)put (L)the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out as well.” 10 And immediately she (M)collapsed at his feet and [i]died; and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And (N)great fear came over the whole church, and over all who heard about these things.
12 [j]At the hands of the apostles many [k](O)signs and wonders were taking place among the people; and they were all [l]together in (P)Solomon’s [m]portico. 13 But none of the rest dared to associate with them; however, (Q)the people held them in high esteem. 14 And increasingly (R)believers in the Lord, large numbers of men and women, were being (S)added to their number, 15 to such an extent that they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by (T)at least his shadow might fall on any of them. 16 The [n]people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together as well, bringing people who were sick [o]or tormented with unclean spirits, and they were all being healed.
Imprisonment and Release
17 But the high priest stood up, along with all his associates (that is (U)the sect of (V)the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy. 18 They laid hands on the apostles and (W)put them in a public prison. 19 But during the night (X)an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the prison, and leading them out, he said, 20 “Go, stand and [p]speak to the people in the temple area [q](Y)the whole message of this Life.” 21 Upon hearing this, they entered into the temple area (Z)about daybreak and began to teach.
Now when (AA)the high priest and his associates came, they called (AB)the [r]Council together, that is, all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent orders to the prison for them to be brought. 22 But (AC)the officers who came did not find them in the prison; and they returned and reported, 23 saying, “We found the prison locked quite securely and the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 Now when (AD)the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them as to what [s]would come of this. 25 But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple area and teaching the people!” 26 Then (AE)the captain went along with (AF)the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for (AG)they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).
27 When they had brought them, they had them stand [t]before (AH)the Council. The high priest interrogated them, 28 saying, “We gave you (AI)strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and [u]yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and (AJ)intend to bring this Man’s blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “(AK)We must obey God rather than men. 30 (AL)The God of our fathers (AM)raised up Jesus, whom you (AN)put to death by hanging Him on [v](AO)a cross. 31 (AP)He is the One whom God exalted [w]to His right hand as a [x](AQ)Prince and a (AR)Savior, to grant (AS)repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are (AT)witnesses [y]of these things; and (AU)so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
Gamaliel’s Counsel
33 But when they heard this, they became (AV)infuriated and nearly decided to execute them. 34 But a Pharisee named (AW)Gamaliel, a (AX)teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in (AY)the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time. 35 And he said to them, “Men of Israel, be careful as to what you are about to do with these men. 36 For, some time ago Theudas appeared, (AZ)claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined him. [z]But he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee appeared in the days of (BA)the census and drew away some people after him; he also perished, and all those who followed him were scattered. 38 And so in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, for if the source of this plan or [aa]movement (BB)is men, it will be overthrown; 39 but if the source is God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found (BC)fighting against God.”
40 They followed his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they (BD)flogged them and ordered them not to [ab]speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. 41 So they went on their way from the presence of the [ac](BE)Council, (BF)rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame (BG)for His name. 42 (BH)And every day, in the temple and [ad]from house to house, they did not stop teaching and (BI)preaching the good news of Jesus as the [ae]Christ.

6 Các thanh niên đứng dậy, liệm xác ông, khiêng ra ngoài, và chôn.
7 Khoảng ba giờ sau, vợ ông, vốn chẳng biết việc đã xảy ra, bước vào. 8 Phi-rơ nói với bà, “Xin bà nói cho tôi biết, có phải ông bà bán miếng đất giá được bao nhiêu đó không?”
Bà đáp, “Vâng, chỉ được bấy nhiêu đó thôi.”
9 Phi-rơ nói với bà, “Tại sao ông bà đồng lòng với nhau thử Ðức Thánh Linh của Chúa? Kìa, bàn chân của những người đi chôn chồng bà vừa về đến cửa, họ sẽ khiêng bà luôn.”
10 Ngay lập tức bà ngã xuống nơi chân ông và tắt thở. Những thanh niên bước vào, thấy bà đã chết, họ khiêng bà ra, và chôn bà bên cạnh chồng bà.
11 Toàn thể hội thánh và tất cả những ai nghe việc ấy đều rất sợ hãi.

12 Khi ấy nhiều dấu kỳ và phép lạ xảy ra trong dân bởi tay các vị sứ đồ. Họ đầy lòng ganh tị, 18 tra tay bắt các sứ đồ, và nhốt họ vào khám công. 19 Nhưng ban đêm một thiên sứ của Chúa đến, mở các cửa nhà giam, đưa họ ra ngoài, và bảo, 20 “Hãy đi, đứng trong đền thờ, và giảng dạy cho dân mọi lời[a] ban sự sống này.” 21 Nghe như thế, vừa hừng đông họ đi vào đền thờ và giảng dạy.
Khi vị thượng tế và những người cộng sự của ông đến, họ triệu tập phiên họp của Hội Ðồng tức tất cả các vị trong Hội Ðồng Lãnh Ðạo của dân I-sơ-ra-ên; đoạn họ sai người đến nhà giam để điệu các sứ đồ đến. 22 Nhưng khi các cảnh binh đền thờ đến đó, họ chẳng thấy vị sứ đồ nào trong ngục, nên họ trở về và báo cáo, 23 “Chúng tôi thấy các cửa nhà giam đều khóa kỹ, và các lính canh đứng gác bên ngoài, nhưng khi mở các cửa ra, chúng tôi chẳng thấy người nào bên trong cả.”
24 Khi viên sĩ quan chỉ huy cảnh binh đền thờ và các trưởng tế nghe những lời đó, họ băn khoăn lo lắng, không biết việc này rồi sẽ ra sao. 25 Bấy giờ có người đến báo với họ, “Xem kìa, những người các ông đã giam trong ngục đang đứng ở đền thờ và giảng dạy cho dân.”
26 Viên sĩ quan chỉ huy cảnh binh đền thờ liền cùng một nhóm thuộc hạ đến bắt các sứ đồ giải về, nhưng họ không dám dùng vũ lực vì sợ bị dân ném đá.
Các Sứ Ðồ trước Hội Ðồng Lãnh Ðạo Do-thái
27 Khi những người ấy đã điệu họ đến và bắt họ đứng giữa Hội Ðồng, vị thượng tế chất vấn họ, 28 “Chúng tôi đã nghiêm cấm các anh không được nhân danh người ấy để giảng dạy, thế mà, hãy xem, các anh đã làm cho Giê-ru-sa-lem đầy dẫy đạo giáo của các anh, và các anh định làm cho máu của người ấy đổ lại trên chúng tôi sao?”
29 Bấy giờ Phi-rơ và các sứ đồ trả lời và nói, “Chúng tôi phải vâng lời Ðức Chúa Trời hơn vâng lời người ta. 30 Ðức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ chúng ta đã làm cho Ðức Chúa Jesus, Ðấng quý vị đã giết bằng cách treo trên cây gỗ, sống lại. 31 Ðức Chúa Trời đã tôn Ðấng ấy lên bên phải Ngài để làm Lãnh Tụ và Ðấng Giải Cứu, hầu ban sự ăn năn và sự tha tội cho dân I-sơ-ra-ên. 32 Chúng tôi là các nhân chứng cho những điều ấy, và Ðức Thánh Linh, Ðấng Ðức Chúa Trời đã ban cho những ai vâng lời Ngài, cũng làm chứng cho những điều ấy.”
33 Khi nghe như thế họ vô cùng tức giận và bàn mưu giết các sứ đồ.
Lời Bàn của Giáo Sư Ga-ma-li-ên
34 Nhưng trong Hội Ðồng có một người Pha-ri-si tên là Ga-ma-li-ên, làm giáo sư luật, được toàn dân kính trọng; ông đứng dậy và ra lệnh đem các sứ đồ ra ngoài một lát. 35 Sau đó ông nói với họ,
“Kính thưa quý vị lãnh đạo của dân I-sơ-ra-ên, xin quý vị hãy cẩn thận về điều quý vị tính làm đối với những người này. 36 Trước đây có Thêu-đa nổi lên. Ông ấy tự cho mình là người có bản lĩnh và lôi kéo được một số người, khoảng bốn trăm người đã theo ông; nhưng khi ông ấy bị giết, tất cả những người theo ông đã tan rã, chẳng còn ai hết. 37 Sau ông ấy có Giu-đa người Ga-li-lê nổi lên trong thời kiểm tra dân số. 41 Các vị sứ đồ ra khỏi phòng họp[b] của Hội Ðồng lòng đầy vui mừng, vì họ đã được coi là xứng đáng để chịu khổ nhục vì danh Ngài.
42 Hằng ngày tại đền thờ hay tại các tư gia, họ vẫn tiếp tục giảng dạy và rao truyền Tin Mừng rằng Ðức Chúa Jesus chính là Ðấng Christ.

Lying to the Holy Spirit
5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 (A)But Peter said, “Ananias, why has (B)Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”
5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, (C)fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. 6 And the young men arose and (D)wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.
7 Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?”
She said, “Yes, for so much.”
9 Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together (E)to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 (F)Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. 11 (G)So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.
Continuing Power in the Church
12 And (H)through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. (I)And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. 13 Yet (J)none of the rest dared join them, (K)but the people esteemed them highly. 14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 15 so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, (L)that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing (M)sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
Imprisoned Apostles Freed
17 (N)Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with [a]indignation, 18 (O)and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. 19 But at night (P)an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, 20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people (Q)all the words of this life.”
21 And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. (R)But the high priest and those with him came and called the [b]council together, with all the [c]elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
Apostles on Trial Again
22 But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, 23 saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing [d]outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!” 24 Now when [e]the high priest, (S)the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. 25 So one came and told them, [f]saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”
26 Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, (T)for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. 27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 28 saying, (U)“Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, (V)and intend to bring this Man’s (W)blood on us!”
29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: (X)“We ought to obey God rather than men. 30 (Y)The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by (Z)hanging on a tree. 31 (AA)Him God has exalted to His right hand to be (AB)Prince and (AC)Savior, (AD)to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And (AE)we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit (AF)whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
Gamaliel’s Advice
33 When they heard this, they were (AG)furious[g] and plotted to kill them. 34 Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named (AH)Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. 35 And he said to them: “Men of Israel, [h]take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. 36 For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, [i]joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. 38 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; 39 (AI)but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found (AJ)to fight against God.”
40 And they agreed with him, and when they had (AK)called for the apostles (AL)and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 So they departed from the presence of the council, (AM)rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for [j]His name. 42 And daily (AN)in the temple, and in every house, (AO)they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
