5 But a certain man named Ananias with his wife Sapphira sold a piece of property,
2 And with his wife’s knowledge and connivance he kept back and wrongfully appropriated some of the proceeds, bringing only a part and putting it at the feet of the apostles.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart that you should lie to and attempt to deceive the Holy Spirit, and should [in violation of your promise] withdraw secretly and appropriate to your own use part of the price from the sale of the land?
4 As long as it remained unsold, was it not still your own? And [even] after it was sold, was not [the money] at your disposal and under your control? Why then, is it that you have proposed and purposed in your heart to do this thing? [How could you have the heart to do such a deed?] You have not [simply] lied to men [playing false and showing yourself utterly deceitful] but to God.
5 Upon hearing these words, Ananias fell down and died. And great dread and terror took possession of all who heard of it.
6 And the young men arose and wrapped up [the body] and carried it out and buried it.
7 Now after an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not having learned of what had happened.
8 And Peter said to her, Tell me, did you sell the land for so much? Yes, she said, for so much.
9 Then Peter said to her, How could you two have agreed and conspired together to try to deceive the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out [also].
10 And instantly she fell down at his feet and died; and the young men entering found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
11 And the whole church and all others who heard of these things were appalled [great awe and strange terror and dread seized them].
12 Now by the hands of the apostles (special messengers) numerous and startling signs and wonders were being performed among the people. And by common consent they all met together [at the temple] in the covered porch (walk) called Solomon’s.
13 And none of those who were not of their number dared to join and associate with them, but the people held them in high regard and praised and made much of them.
14 More and more there were being added to the Lord those who believed [those who acknowledged Jesus as their Savior and devoted themselves to Him joined and gathered with them], crowds both of men and of women,
15 So that they [even] kept carrying out the sick into the streets and placing them on couches and sleeping pads, [in the hope] that as Peter passed by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them.
16 And the people gathered also from the towns and hamlets around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those troubled with foul spirits, and they were all cured.
17 But the high priest rose up and all who were his supporters, that is, the party of the Sadducees, and being filled with [a]jealousy and indignation and rage,
18 They seized and arrested the apostles (special messengers) and put them in the public jail.
19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and, leading them out, said,
20 Go, take your stand in the temple courts and declare to the people the whole doctrine concerning this Life (the eternal life which Christ revealed).
21 And when they heard this, they accordingly went into the temple about daybreak and began to teach. Now the high priest and his supporters who were with him arrived and called together the council (Sanhedrin), even all the senate of the sons of Israel, and they sent to the prison to have [the apostles] brought.
22 But when the attendants arrived there, they failed to find them in the jail; so they came back and reported,
23 We found the prison quite safely locked up and the guards were on duty outside the doors, but when we opened [it], we found no one on the inside.
24 Now when the military leader of the temple area and the chief priests heard these facts, they were much perplexed and thoroughly at a loss about them, wondering into what this might grow.
25 But some man came and reported to them, saying, Listen! The men whom you put in jail are standing [right here] in the temple and teaching the people!
26 Then the military leader went with the attendants and brought [the prisoners], but without violence, for they dreaded the people lest they be stoned by them.
27 So they brought them and set them before the council (Sanhedrin). And the high priest examined them by questioning,
28 Saying, We definitely commanded and strictly charged you not to teach in or about this Name; yet here you have flooded Jerusalem with your doctrine and you intend to bring this [b]Man’s blood upon us.
29 Then Peter and the apostles replied, We must obey God rather than men.
30 The God of our forefathers raised up Jesus, Whom you killed by hanging Him on a tree (cross).(A)
31 God exalted Him to His right hand to be Prince and Leader and Savior and Deliverer and Preserver, in order to grant repentance to Israel and to bestow forgiveness and release from sins.
32 And we are witnesses of these things, and the Holy Spirit is also, Whom God has bestowed on those who obey Him.
33 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and infuriated and wanted to kill the disciples.
34 But a certain Pharisee in the council (Sanhedrin) named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, highly esteemed by all the people, standing up, ordered that the apostles be taken outside for a little while.
35 Then he addressed them [the council, saying]: Men of Israel, take care in regard to what you propose to do concerning these men.
36 For before our time there arose Theudas, asserting himself to be a person of importance, with whom a number of men allied themselves, about 400; but he was killed and all who had listened to and adhered to him were scattered and brought to nothing.
37 And after this one rose up Judas the Galilean, [who led an uprising] during the time of the census, and drew away a popular following after him; he also perished and all his adherents were scattered.
38 Now in the present case let me say to you, stand off (withdraw) from these men and let them alone. For if this doctrine or purpose or undertaking or movement is of human origin, it will fail (be overthrown and come to nothing);
39 But if it is of God, you will not be able to stop or overthrow or destroy them; you might even be found fighting against God!
40 So, convinced by him, they took his advice; and summoning the apostles, they flogged them and sternly forbade them to speak in or about the name of Jesus, and allowed them to go.
41 So they went out from the presence of the council (Sanhedrin), rejoicing that they were being counted worthy [dignified by the indignity] to suffer shame and be exposed to disgrace for [the sake of] His name.
42 Yet [in spite of the threats] they never ceased for a single day, both in the temple area and at home, to teach and to proclaim the good news (Gospel) of Jesus [as] the Christ (the Messiah).

5 Mas um homem chamado Ananias, casado com uma mulher que se chamava Safira, vendeu um terreno 2 e só entregou uma parte do dinheiro aos apóstolos, ficando com o resto. E Safira sabia disso. 3 Então Pedro disse a Ananias:
— Por que você deixou Satanás dominar o seu coração? Por que mentiu para o Espírito Santo? Por que você ficou com uma parte do dinheiro que recebeu pela venda daquele terreno? 4 Antes de você vendê-lo, ele era seu; e, depois de vender, o dinheiro também era seu. Então por que resolveu fazer isso? Você não mentiu para seres humanos — mentiu para Deus!
5 Assim que ouviu isso, Ananias caiu morto; e todos os que souberam do que havia acontecido ficaram com muito medo. 6 Então vieram alguns moços, cobriram o corpo de Ananias, levaram para fora e o sepultaram.
7 A mulher de Ananias chegou umas três horas depois, sem saber do que havia acontecido com o marido. 8 Aí Pedro perguntou a ela:
— Me diga! Foi por este preço que você e o seu marido venderam o terreno?
— Foi! — respondeu ela.
9 Então Pedro disse:
— Por que você e o seu marido resolveram pôr à prova o Espírito do Senhor? Os moços que acabaram de sepultar o seu marido já estão lá na porta e agora vão levar você também.
10 No mesmo instante ela caiu morta aos pés de Pedro. Os moços entraram e, vendo que ela estava morta, levaram o corpo dela e o sepultaram ao lado do marido. 11 E toda a igreja e todos aqueles que souberam disso ficaram apavorados.
Milagres e maravilhas
12 Os apóstolos faziam muitos milagres e maravilhas entre o povo, e os seguidores de Jesus se reuniam no Alpendre de Salomão. 13 Ninguém de fora tinha coragem de se juntar ao grupo deles, mas o povo falava muito bem deles. 14 Uma multidão de homens e mulheres também creu no Senhor e veio aumentar ainda mais o grupo. 15 Por causa dos milagres que os apóstolos faziam, as pessoas punham os doentes nas ruas, em camas e esteiras. Faziam isso para que, quando Pedro passasse, pelo menos a sua sombra cobrisse alguns deles. 16 Multidões vinham das cidades vizinhas de Jerusalém trazendo os seus doentes e os que eram dominados por espíritos maus, e todos eram curados.
Os apóstolos são perseguidos
17 Então o Grande Sacerdote e todos os seus companheiros, que eram do partido dos saduceus, ficaram com inveja dos apóstolos e resolveram fazer alguma coisa. 18 Prenderam os apóstolos e os puseram na cadeia. 19 Mas naquela noite um anjo do Senhor abriu os portões da cadeia, levou os apóstolos para fora e disse:
20 — Vão para o Templo e anunciem ao povo tudo a respeito desta nova vida.
21 Os apóstolos obedeceram e no dia seguinte, bem cedo, entraram no pátio do Templo e começaram a ensinar.
Então o Grande Sacerdote e os seus companheiros chamaram os líderes do povo para uma reunião do Conselho Superior. Depois mandaram que alguns guardas do Templo fossem buscar os apóstolos na cadeia. 22 Porém, quando os guardas chegaram lá, não encontraram os apóstolos. Então voltaram para o lugar onde o Conselho estava reunido 23 e disseram:
— Nós fomos até lá e encontramos a cadeia bem-fechada, e os guardas vigiando os portões; mas, quando os abrimos, não achamos ninguém lá dentro.
24 Quando os chefes dos sacerdotes e o chefe da guarda do Templo ouviram isso, ficaram sem saber o que pensar sobre o que havia acontecido com os apóstolos. 25 Nesse momento chegou alguém, dizendo:
— Escutem! Os homens que vocês prenderam estão lá no pátio do Templo ensinando o povo!
26 Então o chefe da guarda do Templo e os seus homens saíram e trouxeram os apóstolos. Mas não os maltrataram porque tinham medo de serem apedrejados pelo povo. 27 Depois puseram os apóstolos em frente do Conselho. E o Grande Sacerdote disse:
28 — Nós ordenamos que vocês não ensinassem nada a respeito daquele homem. E o que foi que vocês fizeram? Espalharam esse ensinamento por toda a cidade de Jerusalém e ainda querem nos culpar pela morte dele!
29 Então Pedro e os outros apóstolos responderam:
— Nós devemos obedecer a Deus e não às pessoas. 30 Os senhores crucificaram Jesus, mas o Deus dos nossos antepassados o ressuscitou. 31 E Deus o colocou à sua direita como Líder e Salvador, para dar ao povo de Israel oportunidade de se arrepender e receber o perdão dos seus pecados. 32 Nós somos testemunhas de tudo isso — nós e o Espírito Santo, que Deus dá aos que lhe obedecem.
33 Quando os membros do Conselho ouviram isso, ficaram com tanta raiva, que resolveram matar os apóstolos. 34 Mas levantou-se um dos membros do Conselho, um fariseu chamado Gamaliel, que era um mestre da Lei respeitado por todos. Ele mandou que levassem os apóstolos para fora e os deixassem ali um pouco. 35 Então disse ao Conselho:
— Homens de Israel, cuidado com o que vão fazer com estes homens. 36 Há pouco tempo apareceu um homem chamado Teudas, que se dizia muito importante e que com isso conseguiu reunir quatrocentos seguidores. Mas ele foi morto, todos os seus seguidores foram espalhados, e a revolta dele fracassou. 37 Depois disso apareceu Judas, o Galileu, na época do recenseamento. Este também conseguiu juntar muita gente, mas foi morto, e todos os seus seguidores foram espalhados. 38 Portanto, neste caso de agora, não façam nada contra estes homens. Deixem que vão embora porque, se este plano ou este trabalho vem de seres humanos, ele desaparecerá. 39 Mas, se vem de Deus, vocês não poderão destruí-lo, pois neste caso estariam lutando contra Deus.
E o Conselho aceitou a opinião de Gamaliel. 40 Então chamaram os apóstolos e os chicotearam; e aí mandaram que nunca mais falassem nada a respeito de Jesus. Depois os soltaram. 41 Os apóstolos saíram do Conselho muito alegres porque Deus havia achado que eles eram dignos de serem insultados por serem seguidores de Jesus. 42 E, todos os dias, no pátio do Templo e de casa em casa, eles continuavam a ensinar e a anunciar a boa notícia a respeito de Jesus, o Messias.

5 En man som hette Ananias sålde en egendom tillsammans med sin hustru Sapfeira. 2 Men med sin hustrus vetskap behöll han en del av köpesumman och överlämnade resten framför apostlarna.
3 Då sa Petrus: ”Ananias, varför har du låtit Satan fylla ditt hjärta så att du ljuger för den heliga Anden och behåller en del av det du fått för din jord? 4 Den var väl din när du ägde den och du disponerade väl över pengarna när den var såld? Varför har du i ditt hjärta bestämt dig för göra något sådant? Det är inte för människor du har ljugit utan för Gud.”
5 När Ananias hörde dessa ord, föll han död ner på golvet och alla som hörde om händelsen blev helt förskräckta. 6 Några yngre män kom sedan och svepte in honom och bar ut honom och begravde honom.
7 Ungefär tre timmar senare kom Ananias hustru dit utan att veta vad som hade hänt. 8 Petrus frågade henne då: ”Var det här hela den summa ni fick för jorden?”
”Ja”, svarade hon, ”det var det.”
9 Då sa Petrus: ”Hur kunde ni komma överens om att försöka lura Herrens Ande? De steg du just hör utanför dörren är stegen av de män som har begravt din man och nu ska de bära ut dig också.”
10 I samma stund föll hon ner framför Petrus och dog. När de unga männen kom in och fick se att hon var död, bar de ut henne också och begravde henne bredvid hennes man. 11 Hela församlingen, och alla andra som hörde om detta, blev mycket förskräckta.
Många blir botade
12 Genom apostlarna skedde många tecken och under bland folket. De troende möttes regelbundet i Salomos pelarhall. 13 Ingen annan vågade förena sig med dem, men folket visade dem stor respekt 14 och allt fler började tro på Herren Jesus, både män och kvinnor. 15 Man bar också ut sjuka på gatorna och lade dem på bäddar och bårar för att åtminstone Petrus skugga skulle falla på dem när han gick förbi. 16 Även från orterna runt omkring Jerusalem kom det många. Man tog med sig sjuka och sådana som plågades av orena andar och alla blev botade.
Apostlarna arresteras på nytt
17 Översteprästen och hans anhängare som var saddukeer blev mycket avundsjuka 18 och lät arrestera apostlarna och sätta dem i fängelse.
19 Men på natten kom en ängel från Herren och öppnade fängelseportarna och förde ut dem och sa: 20 ”Gå och ställ er i templet och berätta för folket allt om detta nya liv.”
21 De lydde och tidigt på morgonen gick de till templet och började undervisa.
När översteprästen och hans närmaste män kom, kallade de samman det judiska rådet, alla beslutsfattarna i Israel. Och de skickade bud till fängelset för att hämta apostlarna. 22 Men när tjänarna kom till fängelset, kunde de inte hitta dem där. Männen återvände då och rapporterade: 23 ”Fängelseportarna var låsta och vakterna stod utanför, men när vi öppnade fanns det ingen där.”
24 När officeren vid tempelvakten och översteprästerna hörde detta, blev de mycket förvånade och undrade vad som kunde ha hänt. 25 Men då kom någon och berättade att de män som de hade fängslat just nu stod i templet och undervisade folket.
26 Officeren gick då dit tillsammans med sina vakter och hämtade dem, men utan våld, för de var rädda för att bli stenade av folket.
27 När apostlarna hämtats och ställts inför rådet, började översteprästen förhöra dem: 28 ”Vi förbjöd er strängt att tala eller undervisa i det namnet och ändå har ni fyllt hela Jerusalem med er undervisning och anklagar oss för att ha dödat honom!” 29 Men Petrus och de andra apostlarna svarade: ”Man måste lyda Gud mer än människor. 30 Våra förfäders Gud uppväckte Jesus från de döda efter att ni hade hängt upp honom på ett kors och dödat honom. 31 Honom har Gud upphöjt med sin makt och gjort honom till en härskare och frälsare, så att Israel kan vända om och få förlåtelse för sina synder. 32 Vi kan själva vittna om detta och det kan också den heliga Anden som han har gett till dem som lyder honom.”
33 När medlemmarna i rådet hörde detta, blev de ursinniga och ville döda dem. 34 Men då ingrep en av fariseerna[a] i rådet som hette Gamaliel, en laglärare som hela folket respekterade. Han reste sig upp och bad att apostlarna skulle föras ut en stund. 35 Sedan sa han: ”Israeliter, tänk er noga för innan ni gör något med de här männen! 36 För ett tag sedan var det Theudas som gav sig ut för att vara något. Han hade kanske fyrahundra personer som följde honom. Men när han dödades, spreds anhängarna åt olika håll och rörelsen dog ut. 37 Därefter vid tiden för skattskrivningen, kom Judas från Galileen. Han fick med sig en stor mängd människor, men också han blev dödad och alla hans efterföljare skingrades. 38 Därför föreslår jag att ni lämnar de här männen ifred och låter dem gå. Om detta bara är ett mänskligt påhitt, då kommer det snart att rinna ut i sanden. 39 Men om det är från Gud, då kan ni inte stoppa dem. Se upp så att ni inte strider mot Gud själv!”
40 Medlemmarna i rådet accepterade hans förslag, kallade in apostlarna och lät dem piskas. Sedan förbjöd man dem än en gång att undervisa i Jesus namn och lät dem gå. 41 Men apostlarna lämnade rådssalen, glada över att de hade ansetts värdiga att förnedras på grund av Namnet. 42 Och varje dag fortsatte de att undervisa både i templet och i hemmen och sprida evangeliet om att Jesus är Messias.
