⁶ Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,^(A) and carried him out and buried him.

⁴⁰ Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.^(A) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.^(B)

¹⁷ They took Absalom, threw him into a big pit in the forest and piled up^(A) a large heap of rocks^(B) over him. Meanwhile, all the Israelites fled to their homes.

²³ you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight.^(A) Be sure to bury^(B) it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse.^(C) You must not desecrate^(D) the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

⁴ Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan,^(A) sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel,^(B) and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp,^(C) away from the front of the sanctuary.^(D)” ⁵ So they came and carried them, still in their tunics,^(E) outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

⁶ Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar,^(F) “Do not let your hair become unkempt^[a](G) and do not tear your clothes,^(H) or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community.^(I) But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn^(J) for those the Lord has destroyed by fire.
