³⁴ But a Pharisee named Gamaliel,^(A) a teacher of the law,^(B) who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while.

³ “I am a Jew,^(A) born in Tarsus^(B) of Cilicia,^(C) but brought up in this city. I studied under^(D) Gamaliel^(E) and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors.^(F) I was just as zealous^(G) for God as any of you are today.

⁴⁶ After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man^(A)

¹⁷ One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law^(B) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.^(C)

⁷ When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. ⁸ (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection,^(A) and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees believe all these things.)

⁹ There was a great uproar, and some of the teachers of the law who were Pharisees^(B) stood up and argued vigorously. “We find nothing wrong with this man,”^(C) they said. “What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”^(D)

⁵⁰ Nicodemus,^(A) who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, ⁵¹ “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

⁵² They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”^(B)
