Peter and John’s Trial in Front of the Jewish Council
4 Some priests, the officer in charge of the temple guards, and some Sadducees approached Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 These religious authorities were greatly annoyed. Peter and John were teaching the people and spreading the message that the dead will come back to life through Yeshua. 3 So the temple guards arrested them. Since it was already evening, they put Peter and John in jail until the next day.
4 But many of those who had heard the message became believers, so the number of men who believed grew to about 5,000.
5 The next day the Jewish rulers, the leaders, and the experts in Moses’ Teachings met in Jerusalem. 6 The chief priest Annas, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and the rest of the chief priest’s family were present. 7 They made Peter and John stand in front of them and then asked, “By what power or in whose name did you do this?”
8 Then Peter, because he was filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and leaders of the people, 9 today you are cross-examining us about the good we did for a crippled man. You want to know how he was made well. 10 You and all the people of Israel must understand that this man stands in your presence with a healthy body because of the power of Yeshua Christ from Nazareth. You crucified Yeshua Christ, but God has brought him back to life. 11 He is the stone that the builders rejected, the stone that has become the cornerstone. 12 No one else can save us. Indeed, we can be saved only by the power of the one named Yeshua and not by any other person.”
13 After they found out that Peter and John had no education or special training, they were surprised to see how boldly they spoke. They realized that these men had been with Yeshua. 14 When they saw the man who was healed standing with Peter and John, they couldn’t say anything against the two apostles. 15 So they ordered Peter and John to leave the council room and began to discuss the matter among themselves. 16 They said, “What should we do to these men? Clearly, they’ve performed a miracle that everyone in Jerusalem knows about. We can’t deny that. 17 So let’s threaten them. Let’s tell them that they must never speak to anyone about the one named Yeshua. Then the news about the miracle that they have performed will not spread any further among the people.”
18 They called Peter and John and ordered them never to teach about Yeshua or even mention his name.
19 Peter and John answered them, “Decide for yourselves whether God wants people to listen to you rather than to him. 20 We cannot stop talking about what we’ve seen and heard.”
21 The authorities threatened them even more and then let them go. Since all the people were praising God for what had happened, the authorities couldn’t find any way to punish Peter and John. 22 (The man who was healed by this miracle was over 40 years old.)
The Apostles Pray for God’s Help
23 When Peter and John were released, they went to the other apostles and told them everything the chief priests and leaders had said. 24 When the apostles heard this, they were united and loudly prayed to God, “Master, you made the sky, the land, the sea, and everything in them. 25 You said through the Holy Spirit, who spoke through your servant David (our ancestor),
‘Why do the nations act arrogantly?
Why do their people devise useless plots?
26 Kings take their stand.
Rulers make plans together
against the Lord and against his Messiah.’
27 “In this city Herod and Pontius Pilate made plans together with non-Jewish people and the people of Israel. They made their plans against your holy servant Yeshua, whom you anointed. 28 Through your will and power, they did everything that you had already decided should be done.
29 “Lord, pay attention to their threats now, and allow us to speak your word boldly. 30 Show your power by healing, performing miracles, and doing amazing things through the power and the name of your holy servant Yeshua.”
31 When the apostles had finished praying, their meeting place shook. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God boldly.
The Believers Share Their Property
32 The whole group of believers lived in harmony. No one called any of his possessions his own. Instead, they shared everything.
33 With great power the apostles continued to testify that the Lord Yeshua had come back to life. God’s abundant good will[a] was with all of them. 34 None of them needed anything. From time to time, people sold land or houses and brought the money 35 to the apostles. Then the money was distributed to anyone who needed it.
36 Joseph, a descendant of Levi, had been born on the island of Cyprus. The apostles called him Barnabas, which means “a person who encourages.” 37 He had some land. He sold it and turned the money over to the apostles.

On Trial for an Act of Kindness
4 As Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the temple guard, and the Sadducees approached them. 2 They were very upset because Peter and John were teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection from the dead in connection with Jesus. 3 They arrested them and put them in jail until the next day because it was already evening.
4 But many of those who had heard the message believed, and the number of the men increased to about five thousand.
5 The next day, the rulers, the elders, and the experts in the law assembled in Jerusalem 6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all the rest of the high priest’s family. 7 After they made Peter and John stand in front of them, they began to question them: “By what power or by what name did you do this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel,[a] 9 if we are being questioned today for a kind act that was done for the lame man, as to how this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that it was by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead! By him this man stands before you healed. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you builders, which has become the cornerstone.[b]
12 “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”
13 When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and found out that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were astonished and took note of the fact that these men had been with Jesus.
14 But since they saw the man who had been healed standing there with them, they could not say anything in reply. 15 After they had ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, they discussed the matter among themselves. 16 They asked, “What should we do with these men? To be sure, it is evident to all who live in Jerusalem that a miraculous sign has been done through them, and we cannot deny it. 17 However, in order that this may spread no further among the people, let us give them a strict[c] warning not to speak any longer to anyone in this name.”
18 Then they summoned them and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John answered them, “Decide whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God. 20 For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
21 After they had threatened them further, they let them go. They found no way to punish them because all of the people were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this miraculous sign of healing was performed was over forty years old.
The Church Speaks God’s Word Boldly
23 After Peter and John were released, they went to their own friends and reported everything the high priests and the elders had said. 24 When they heard this, with one mind they raised their voices to God and said, “Master, you are the God who[d] made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them. 25 By the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David, your servant, you said:
Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth take their stand,
and the rulers are gathered together
against the Lord
and against his Anointed One.[e] [f]
27 “For certainly, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and people of Israel, were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did whatever your hand and your plan had decided beforehand should happen.
29 “Now Lord, look at their threats and give to your servants the ability to keep on speaking your word with all boldness 30 as you stretch out your hand to heal and as signs and wonders take place through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
31 After they prayed, the place where they were gathered was shaken. Also, everyone was filled with the Holy Spirit, and they continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
The Believers Shared Everything
32 The whole group of believers was one in heart and soul. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they held everything in common. 33 The apostles continued to testify about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ[g] with great power, and abundant grace was on all of them. 34 There was not a needy person among them. For from time to time those who were owners of lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds received from what was sold, 35 and laid it at the apostles’ feet. It was distributed to each one according to what anyone needed.
36 Joseph, who was called Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated “son of encouragement”), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him. He brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

4 And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,
2 Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.
4 Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
5 And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,
6 And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.
7 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
9 If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
14 And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.
17 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.
18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.
22 For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.
23 And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
35 And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,

Arresto de Pedro y Juan
4 Mientras Pedro y Juan hablaban al pueblo, se les echaron encima(A) los sacerdotes, el capitán de la guardia del templo(B), y los saduceos(C), 2 indignados porque enseñaban al pueblo, y anunciaban en[a] Jesús la resurrección de entre los muertos(D). 3 Les echaron mano, y los pusieron en la cárcel(E) hasta el día siguiente, pues ya era tarde. 4 Pero muchos de los que habían oído el mensaje[b] creyeron, llegando el número de los hombres como a 5,000(F).
Pedro y Juan ante el Concilio
5 Sucedió que al día siguiente se reunieron en Jerusalén sus gobernantes, ancianos(G) y escribas. 6 Estaban allí el sumo sacerdote Anás, Caifás(H), Juan y Alejandro, y todos los que eran del linaje de los sumos sacerdotes. 7 Poniendo a Pedro y a Juan en medio de ellos, les interrogaban: «¿Con qué poder[c], o en qué nombre, han hecho esto?».
8 Entonces Pedro, lleno del Espíritu Santo(I), les dijo: «Gobernantes y ancianos(J) del pueblo, 9 si se nos está interrogando hoy por causa del beneficio hecho a un hombre enfermo, de qué manera[d] este ha sido sanado[e](K), 10 sepan todos ustedes, y todo el pueblo de Israel, que en el nombre de Jesucristo el Nazareno(L), a quien ustedes crucificaron y a quien Dios resucitó de entre los muertos(M), por Él[f], este hombre se halla aquí sano delante de ustedes.
11 »Este Jesús(N) es la piedra(O) desechada(P) por ustedes los constructores, pero que ha venido a ser la piedra angular[g]. 12 En ningún otro(Q) hay salvación, porque no hay otro nombre bajo el cielo dado a los hombres, en el cual podamos ser[h] salvos».
Amenazados y puestos en libertad
13 Al ver la confianza(R) de Pedro y de Juan(S), y dándose cuenta de que eran hombres sin letras y sin preparación(T), se maravillaban, y reconocían que ellos habían estado con Jesús. 14 Y viendo de pie junto a ellos al hombre que había sido sanado, no tenían nada que decir en contra. 15 Pero después de ordenarles que salieran fuera del Concilio[i](U), deliberaban entre sí: 16 «¿Qué haremos(V) con estos hombres?», decían. «Porque el hecho de que un milagro notable ha sido realizado por medio de ellos(W) es evidente a todos los que viven en Jerusalén, y no podemos negarlo. 17 Pero a fin de que no se divulgue más entre el pueblo, vamos a amenazarlos para que no hablen más a ningún hombre en este nombre(X)».
18 Cuando los llamaron, les ordenaron no hablar ni enseñar en el nombre de Jesús(Y). 19 Pero Pedro y Juan(Z), les contestaron: «Ustedes mismos juzguen si es justo delante de Dios obedecer a ustedes en vez de obedecer a Dios(AA). 20 Porque nosotros no podemos dejar de decir(AB) lo que hemos visto y oído».
21 Y después de amenazarlos otra vez, los dejaron ir, no hallando la manera de castigarlos por causa del pueblo(AC), porque todos glorificaban a Dios(AD) por lo que había acontecido; 22 porque el hombre en quien se había realizado este milagro de sanidad tenía más de cuarenta años.
Oración de la iglesia
23 Cuando quedaron en libertad, fueron a los suyos y les contaron todo lo que los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos les habían dicho. 24 Al oír ellos esto, unánimes alzaron la voz a Dios y dijeron: «Oh, Señor[j], Tú eres el que hiciste el cielo y la tierra, el mar y todo lo que en ellos hay(AE), 25 el que por el Espíritu Santo, por boca de nuestro padre David(AF), Tu siervo, dijiste:
“¿(AG)Por qué se enfurecieron los gentiles[k],
Y los pueblos tramaron cosas vanas?
26 -”Se presentaron los reyes de la tierra,
Y los gobernantes se juntaron a una
Contra el Señor y contra Su Cristo[l](AH)”.
27 »Porque en verdad, en esta ciudad se unieron tanto Herodes(AI) como Poncio Pilato(AJ), junto con los gentiles(AK) y los pueblos de Israel, contra Tu santo Siervo[m] Jesús(AL), a quien Tú ungiste, 28 para hacer cuanto Tu mano y Tu propósito habían predestinado que sucediera(AM). 29 Ahora[n], Señor, considera sus amenazas, y permite que Tus siervos hablen Tu palabra con toda confianza(AN), 30 mientras extiendes Tu mano para que se hagan curaciones, señales y prodigios(AO) mediante el nombre de Tu santo Siervo Jesús(AP)».
31 Después que oraron, el lugar donde estaban reunidos(AQ) tembló, y todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo(AR) y hablaban la palabra de Dios con valor(AS).
Todas las cosas en común
32 La congregación de los que creyeron era de un corazón y un alma. Ninguno decía ser suyo lo que poseía, sino que todas las cosas eran de propiedad común(AT). 33 Con gran poder los apóstoles daban testimonio(AU) de la resurrección del Señor Jesús[o](AV), y había abundante gracia sobre todos ellos. 34 No había, pues, ningún necesitado entre ellos, porque todos los que poseían tierras o casas(AW) las vendían, traían el precio de lo vendido, 35 y lo depositaban a los pies de los apóstoles(AX), y se distribuía a cada uno según su necesidad(AY).
36 Y José, un levita natural de Chipre(AZ), a quien también los apóstoles llamaban Bernabé(BA), que traducido significa Hijo de Consolación[p](BB), 37 poseía un campo y lo vendió, trajo el dinero y lo depositó a los pies de los apóstoles(BC).
