⁷ When they had made the prisoners^[a] stand in their midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”

The Authority of Jesus Questioned

²³ When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”^(A)

²⁸ and said, “By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do them?”

⁴⁰ and when they had called in the apostles, they had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and let them go.^(A)

²⁷ When they had brought them, they had them stand before the council. The high priest questioned them, ²⁸ saying, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,^[a] yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you are determined to bring this man’s blood on us.”^(A)

¹⁸ The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?”^(A)

¹⁰ let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,^[a] whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead.^(A)

¹⁴ He answered, “Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”^(A)

⁹ When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.^(A)
