¹⁷ But to keep it from spreading further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”

²⁸ saying, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,^[a] yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you are determined to bring this man’s blood on us.”^(A)

⁸ For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it.^(A)

¹⁸ For I will not be so bold as to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to win obedience from the gentiles, by word and deed, ¹⁹ by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit,^[a] so that from Jerusalem and as far around as Illyricum I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.^{(A) 20} Thus I make it my ambition to proclaim the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, so that I do not build on someone else’s foundation,^{(B) 21} but as it is written,

²⁴ Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were perplexed about them, wondering what might be going on.^(A)

¹⁵ who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets^[a] and drove us out; they displease God and oppose everyone^{(A) 16} by hindering us from speaking to the gentiles so that they may be saved. Thus they have constantly been filling up the measure of their sins, but wrath^[b] has overtaken them at last.^[c](B)

¹⁶ But not all have obeyed the good news,^[a] for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed^[b] our message?”^{(A) 17} So faith^[c] comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.^[d]

¹⁸ But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have:

³⁹ but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them—in that case you may even be found fighting against God!”

They were convinced by him,^{(A) 40} and when they had called in the apostles, they had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and let them go.^(B)

²⁹ And now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness,^{(A) 30} while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant^[a] Jesus.”^(B)
