2 My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor^[a] with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. ² And he is the atoning sacrifice^[b] for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. ³ This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commandments.

⁹ By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. ¹⁰ In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice^[a] for our sins.
