¹⁰ they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful,^(A) and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

² Now a man who was lame from birth^(A) was being carried to the temple gate^(B) called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg^(C) from those going into the temple courts.

³ “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.^(A)

²⁰ For the Father loves the Son^(A) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,^(B) so that you will be amazed.

⁴³ And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples,

²¹ After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people^(A) were praising God^(B) for what had happened. ²² For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

¹⁴ But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. ¹⁵ So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin^(A) and then conferred together. ¹⁶ “What are we going to do with these men?”^(B) they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,^(C) and we cannot deny it.

¹² Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

⁷ Utterly amazed,^(A) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?^(B)

¹⁸ They^(A) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. ¹⁹ “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”

²⁰ “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. ²¹ But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.”
