Peter Heals a Lame Beggar

3 One day Peter and John^(A) were going up to the temple^(B) at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon.^{(C) 2} Now a man who was lame from birth^(D) was being carried to the temple gate^(E) called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg^(F) from those going into the temple courts. ³ When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. ⁴ Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” ⁵ So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.

⁶ Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,^(G) walk.” ⁷ Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. ⁸ He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping,^(H) and praising God. ⁹ When all the people^(I) saw him walking and praising God, ¹⁰ they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful,^(J) and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

⁸ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,^(A) said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!^{(B) 9} If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame^(C) and are being asked how he was healed, ¹⁰ then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,^(D) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,^(E) that this man stands before you healed. ¹¹ Jesus is

¹² Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”^(G)

¹³ When they saw the courage of Peter and John^(H) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,^(I) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.^{(J) 14} But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. ¹⁵ So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin^(K) and then conferred together. ¹⁶ “What are we going to do with these men?”^(L) they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,^(M) and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷ But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”

¹⁸ Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.^{(N) 19} But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him?^(O) You be the judges! ²⁰ As for us, we cannot help speaking^(P) about what we have seen and heard.”^(Q)

²¹ After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people^(R) were praising God^(S) for what had happened. ²² For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

²⁹ Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.^{(A) 30} Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders^(B) through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”^(C)

³¹ After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.^(D) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit^(E) and spoke the word of God^(F) boldly.^(G)

The Believers Share Their Possessions

³² All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.^{(H) 33} With great power the apostles continued to testify^(I) to the resurrection^(J) of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace^(K) was so powerfully at work in them all

The Apostles Heal Many

¹² The apostles performed many signs and wonders^(A) among the people. And all the believers used to meet together^(B) in Solomon’s Colonnade.^{(C) 13} No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.^{(D) 14} Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.^{(E) 15} As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.^{(F) 16} Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.^(G)

⁷ So the word of God spread.^(A) The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly,^(B) and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

Stephen Seized

⁸ Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs^(C) among the people.

⁶ When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said.

¹² The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders^(A) God had done among the Gentiles through them.^(B)
