Paul on the Island of Malta
28 After we had reached safety, we then learned that the island was called Malta. 2 The natives showed us unusual kindness. Since it had begun to rain and was cold, they kindled a fire and welcomed all of us round it. 3 Paul had gathered a bundle of brushwood and was putting it on the fire, when a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. 4 When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, ‘This man must be a murderer; though he has escaped from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live.’ 5 He, however, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. 6 They were expecting him to swell up or drop dead, but after they had waited a long time and saw that nothing unusual had happened to him, they changed their minds and began to say that he was a god.
7 Now in the neighbourhood of that place were lands belonging to the leading man of the island, named Publius, who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days. 8 It so happened that the father of Publius lay sick in bed with fever and dysentery. Paul visited him and cured him by praying and putting his hands on him. 9 After this happened, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases also came and were cured. 10 They bestowed many honours on us, and when we were about to sail, they put on board all the provisions we needed.
Paul Arrives at Rome
11 Three months later we set sail on a ship that had wintered at the island, an Alexandrian ship with the Twin Brothers as its figurehead. 12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there for three days; 13 then we weighed anchor and came to Rhegium. After one day there a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli. 14 There we found believers[a] and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome. 15 The believers[b] from there, when they heard of us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul thanked God and took courage.
16 When we came into Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.
Paul and Jewish Leaders in Rome
17 Three days later he called together the local leaders of the Jews. When they had assembled, he said to them, ‘Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, yet I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. 18 When they had examined me, the Romans[c] wanted to release me, because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case. 19 But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to the emperor—even though I had no charge to bring against my nation. 20 For this reason therefore I have asked to see you and speak with you,[d] since it is for the sake of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.’ 21 They replied, ‘We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of the brothers coming here has reported or spoken anything evil about you. 22 But we would like to hear from you what you think, for with regard to this sect we know that everywhere it is spoken against.’
Paul Preaches in Rome
23 After they had fixed a day to meet him, they came to him at his lodgings in great numbers. From morning until evening he explained the matter to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the law of Moses and from the prophets. 24 Some were convinced by what he had said, while others refused to believe. 25 So they disagreed with each other; and as they were leaving, Paul made one further statement: ‘The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah,
26 “Go to this people and say,
You will indeed listen, but never understand,
and you will indeed look, but never perceive.
27 For this people’s heart has grown dull,
and their ears are hard of hearing,
and they have shut their eyes;
so that they might not look with their eyes,
and listen with their ears,
and understand with their heart and turn—
and I would heal them.”
28 Let it be known to you then that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.’[e]
30 He lived there for two whole years at his own expense[f] and welcomed all who came to him, 31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.

7 In that region there was an estate of the [b]leading citizen of the island, whose name was Publius, who received us and entertained us courteously for three days. 8 And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Arrival at Rome
11 After three months we sailed in (I)an Alexandrian ship whose figurehead was the [c]Twin Brothers, which had wintered at the island. 12 And landing at Syracuse, we stayed three days. 13 From there we circled round and reached Rhegium. And after one day the south wind blew; and the next day we came to Puteoli, 14 where we found (J)brethren, and were invited to stay with them seven days. And so we went toward Rome. 15 And from there, when the brethren heard about us, they came to meet us as far as Appii Forum and Three Inns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.
16 Now when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard; but (K)Paul was permitted to dwell by himself with the soldier who guarded him.
Paul’s Ministry at Rome
17 And it came to pass after three days that Paul called the leaders of the Jews together. So when they had come together, he said to them: “Men and brethren, (L)though I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet (M)I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans, 18 who, (N)when they had examined me, wanted to let me go, because there was no cause for putting me to death. 19 But when the [d]Jews spoke against it, (O)I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything of which to accuse my nation. 20 For this reason therefore I have called for you, to see you and speak with you, because (P)for the hope of Israel I am bound with (Q)this chain.”
21 Then they said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brethren who came reported or spoken any evil of you. 22 But we desire to hear from you what you think; for concerning this sect, we know that (R)it is spoken against everywhere.”
23 So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, (S)to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus (T)from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening. 24 And (U)some were persuaded by the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved. 25 So when they did not agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had said one word: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to [e]our fathers, 26 saying,
(V)‘Go to this people and say:
“Hearing you will hear, and shall not understand;
And seeing you will see, and not perceive;
27 For the hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.” ’
28 “Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent (W)to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!” 29 [f]And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had a great dispute among themselves.
30 Then Paul dwelt two whole years in his own rented house, and received all who came to him, 31 (X)preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him.

28 När alla kommit välbehållna iland, fick vi reda på att ön hette Malta. 2 Öns befolkning var mycket vänlig mot oss och gjorde i ordning en brasa och tog hand om oss alla, för det hade börjat regna och var kallt. 3 Paulus samlade ett fång grenar och då han lade det på elden, lockades en huggorm fram av värmen och högg sig fast i hans hand. 4 När öborna såg ormen hänga där, sa de till varandra: ”Han är säkert en mördare! Han lyckades rädda sig ur havet, men rättvisans gudinna vill inte låta honom leva.”
5 Men Paulus skakade av sig ormen i elden och var helt oskadd. 6 Alla väntade att han skulle svullna upp eller att han plötsligt skulle falla ner död, men när de hade väntat länge och väl och inget hände, ändrade de uppfattning och sa att han var en gud.

Paulus anländer till Rom

15 De troende i Rom hade hört att vi var på väg och kom och mötte oss redan vid Forum Appii[b] och Tres Tabernae[c] och när Paulus såg dem, tackade han Gud och fick nytt mod.
16 När vi till slut kom fram till Rom, fick Paulus lov att bo i en egen bostad tillsammans med den soldat som vaktade honom.
Paulus tal till judarna i Rom
17 Tre dagar efter ankomsten kallade Paulus till sig de judiska ledarna och när de var samlade, sa han till dem:
”Bröder, jag blev arresterad i Jerusalem och överlämnad till romarna, trots att jag inte hade gjort något mot vårt folk eller brutit mot någon av våra förfäders traditioner. 18 Romarna ställde mig sedan inför rätta och ville frige mig eftersom det inte fanns något skäl att döma mig till döden. 19 Men judarna protesterade och jag blev därför tvungen att vädja till kejsaren. Fast min avsikt är inte att på något sätt anklaga mitt eget folk. 20 Det här är alltså bakgrunden till att jag bett er komma hit idag, så att vi kan träffas och talas vid. Jag är bunden med dessa kedjor för Israels hopp.”
21 De svarade: ”Vi har inte fått några brev från Judeen eller några som helst dåliga rapporter om dig av de bröder som kommit hit. 22 Tvärtom vill vi gärna veta vad du tror på, för det vi vet om denna sekt är att den stöter på motstånd överallt.”
23 De kom därför överens om att träffas en annan dag och vid det tillfället samlades ännu fler människor där Paulus bodde. Han började tidigt på morgonen och höll på ända till kvällen med att vittna och undervisa om Guds rike och han försökte med hjälp av Moses lag och profeterna övertyga dem om Jesus.
24 Några av dem blev övertygade av vad han sa men andra trodde inte. 25 Efter en häftig diskussion skildes de sedan åt och Paulus skickade med dem ett sista ord:

26 ’Gå och säg till det här folket:
