¹⁴ We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice^(A) saying to me in Aramaic,^[a](B) ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’

⁴⁰ After receiving the commander’s permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned^(A) to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic^[a]:^(B)

² When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic,^(A) they became very quiet.

Then Paul said:

⁷ The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound^(A) but did not see anyone.^(B)

⁷ I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?’

⁸ “‘Who are you, Lord?’ I asked.

“ ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth,^(A) whom you are persecuting,’ he replied. ⁹ My companions saw the light,^(B) but they did not understand the voice^(C) of him who was speaking to me.

⁴ He fell to the ground and heard a voice^(A) say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

⁵ “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.

²² Are we trying to arouse the Lord’s jealousy?^(A) Are we stronger than he?^(B)

² “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup^(A) that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling.^(B) Judah^(C) will be besieged as well as Jerusalem.

⁸ For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye^(A)—
