Paul Appeals to Caesar

25 Now when[a] Festus set foot in the province, after three days he went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea. And the chief priests and the most prominent men of the Jews brought charges against Paul to him, and were urging him, asking for a favor against him, that he summon him to Jerusalem, because they[b] were preparing an ambush to do away with him along the way. Then Festus replied that Paul was being kept at Caesarea, and he himself was about to go there[c] in a short time. So he said, “Let those among you who are prominent go down with me,[d] and[e] if there is any wrong in the man, let them bring charges against him.”

And after he[f] had stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea. On the next day he sat down on the judgment seat and[g] gave orders for Paul to be brought. And when[h] he arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many and serious charges that they were not able to prove, while[i] Paul said in his defense, “Neither against the law of the Jews nor against the temple nor against Caesar have I sinned with reference to anything!” But Festus, because he[j] wanted to do a favor for the Jews, answered and[k] said to Paul, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem to be tried before me there concerning these things?” 10 But Paul said, “I am standing before the judgment seat of Caesar, where it is necessary for me to be judged. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you also know very well. 11 If then I am doing wrong[l] and have done anything deserving death, I am not trying to avoid[m] dying. But if there is nothing true of the things which these people are accusing me, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar!” 12 Then Festus, after[n] discussing this[o] with his[p] council, replied, “You have appealed to Caesar—to Caesar you will go!”

Festus Asks King Agrippa for Advice

13 Now after[q] some days had passed, King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea to welcome Festus. 14 And while they were staying there many days, Festus laid out the case against Paul to the king, saying, “There is a certain man left behind by Felix as a prisoner, 15 concerning whom when[r] I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews presented evidence, asking for a sentence of condemnation against him. 16 To them[s] I replied that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up any man before the one who had been accused met his[t] accusers face to face and received an opportunity for a defense concerning the accusation. 17 Therefore, when[u] they had assembled here, I made[v] no delay; on the next day I sat down on the judgment seat and[w] gave orders for the man to be brought. 18 When they[x] stood up, his[y] accusers began bringing[z] no charge concerning him[aa] of the evil deeds that I was suspecting, 19 but they had some issues with him concerning their own religion, and concerning a certain Jesus, who was dead, whom Paul claimed to be alive. 20 And because[ab] I was at a loss with regard to the investigation concerning these things, I asked if he was willing to go to Jerusalem and to be judged there concerning these things. 21 But when[ac] Paul appealed that he be kept under guard for the decision of His Majesty the Emperor, I gave orders for him to be kept under guard until I could send him to Caesar.” 22 So Agrippa said to Festus, “I want to hear the man myself also.” “Tomorrow,” he said, “you will hear him.”

23 So on the next day, Agrippa and Bernice came with great pageantry and entered into the audience hall, along with military tribunes and the most prominent men of the city. And when[ad] Festus gave the order, Paul was brought in. 24 And Festus said, “King Agrippa and all who are present with us, you see this man about whom the whole population of the Jews appealed to me, both in Jerusalem and here, shouting that he must not live any longer. 25 But I understood that he had done nothing deserving death himself, and when[ae] this man appealed to His Majesty the Emperor, I decided to send him.[af] 26 I do not have anything definite to write to my[ag] lord about him.[ah] Therefore I have brought him before you all[ai]—and especially before you, King Agrippa—so that after[aj] this preliminary hearing has taken place, I may have something to write. 27 For it seems unreasonable to me to send a prisoner and not to indicate the charges against him.”

El proceso ante Festo

25 Tres días después de llegar a la provincia, Festo subió de Cesarea a Jerusalén. Entonces los jefes de los sacerdotes y los dirigentes de los judíos presentaron sus acusaciones contra Pablo. Insistentemente le pidieron a Festo que les hiciera el favor de trasladar a Pablo a Jerusalén. Lo cierto es que ellos estaban preparando una emboscada para matarlo en el camino. Festo respondió: «Pablo está preso en Cesarea, y yo mismo partiré en breve para allá. Que vayan conmigo algunos de vuestros dirigentes y formulen allí sus acusaciones contra él, si es que ha hecho algo malo».

Después de pasar entre los judíos unos ocho o diez días, Festo bajó a Cesarea, y al día siguiente convocó al tribunal y mandó que le trajeran a Pablo. Cuando este se presentó, los judíos que habían bajado de Jerusalén lo rodearon, formulando contra él muchas acusaciones graves que no podían probar.

Pablo se defendía:

―No he cometido ninguna falta ni contra la ley de los judíos ni contra el templo ni contra el emperador.

Pero Festo, queriendo congraciarse con los judíos, le preguntó:

―¿Estás dispuesto a subir a Jerusalén para ser juzgado allí ante mí?

10 Pablo contestó:

―Ya estoy ante el tribunal del emperador, que es donde se me debe juzgar. No he hecho ningún agravio a los judíos, como tú sabes muy bien. 11 Si soy culpable de haber hecho algo que merezca la muerte, no me niego a morir. Pero, si no son ciertas las acusaciones que estos judíos formulan contra mí, nadie tiene el derecho de entregarme a ellos para complacerlos. ¡Apelo al emperador!

12 Después de consultar con sus asesores, Festo declaró:

―Has apelado al emperador. ¡Al emperador irás!

Festo consulta al rey Agripa

13 Pasados algunos días, el rey Agripa y Berenice llegaron a Cesarea para saludar a Festo. 14 Como se entretuvieron allí varios días, Festo le presentó al rey el caso de Pablo.

―Hay aquí un hombre —le dijo— que Félix dejó preso. 15 Cuando fui a Jerusalén, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos de los judíos presentaron acusaciones contra él y exigieron que se le condenara. 16 Les respondí que no es costumbre de los romanos entregar a ninguna persona sin antes concederle al acusado un careo con sus acusadores, y darle la oportunidad de defenderse de los cargos. 17 Cuando acudieron a mí, no dilaté el caso, sino que convoqué al tribunal el día siguiente y mandé traer a este hombre. 18 Al levantarse para hablar, sus acusadores no alegaron en su contra ninguno de los delitos que yo había supuesto. 19 Más bien, tenían contra él algunas cuestiones tocantes a su propia religión y sobre un tal Jesús, ya muerto, que Pablo sostiene que está vivo. 20 Yo no sabía cómo investigar tales cuestiones, así que le pregunté si estaba dispuesto a ir a Jerusalén para ser juzgado allí con respecto a esos cargos. 21 Pero, como Pablo apeló para que se le reservara el fallo al emperador,[a] ordené que quedara detenido hasta ser remitido a Roma.[b]

22 ―A mí también me gustaría oír a ese hombre —le dijo Agripa a Festo.

―Pues mañana mismo lo oirás —le contestó Festo.

23 Al día siguiente Agripa y Berenice se presentaron con gran pompa, y entraron en la sala de la audiencia acompañados por oficiales de alto rango y por las personalidades más distinguidas de la ciudad. Festo mandó que le trajeran a Pablo, 24 y dijo:

―Rey Agripa y todos los presentes: Aquí tenéis a este hombre. Todo el pueblo judío me ha presentado una demanda contra él, tanto en Jerusalén como aquí en Cesarea, pidiendo a gritos su muerte. 25 He llegado a la conclusión de que él no ha hecho nada que merezca la muerte, pero, como apeló al emperador, he decidido enviarlo a Roma. 26 El problema es que no tengo definido nada que escribir al soberano acerca de él. Por eso lo he hecho comparecer ante vosotros, y especialmente delante de ti, rey Agripa, para que como resultado de esta investigación tenga yo algunos datos para mi carta; 27 me parece absurdo enviar un preso sin especificar los cargos contra él.

Paul’s Trial Before Festus

25 Three days after arriving in the province, Festus(A) went up from Caesarea(B) to Jerusalem, where the chief priests and the Jewish leaders appeared before him and presented the charges against Paul.(C) They requested Festus, as a favor to them, to have Paul transferred to Jerusalem, for they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way.(D) Festus answered, “Paul is being held(E) at Caesarea,(F) and I myself am going there soon. Let some of your leaders come with me, and if the man has done anything wrong, they can press charges against him there.”

After spending eight or ten days with them, Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he convened the court(G) and ordered that Paul be brought before him.(H) When Paul came in, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him. They brought many serious charges against him,(I) but they could not prove them.(J)

Then Paul made his defense: “I have done nothing wrong against the Jewish law or against the temple(K) or against Caesar.”

Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor,(L) said to Paul, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there on these charges?”(M)

10 Paul answered: “I am now standing before Caesar’s court, where I ought to be tried. I have not done any wrong to the Jews,(N) as you yourself know very well. 11 If, however, I am guilty of doing anything deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!”(O)

12 After Festus had conferred with his council, he declared: “You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you will go!”

Festus Consults King Agrippa

13 A few days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea(P) to pay their respects to Festus. 14 Since they were spending many days there, Festus discussed Paul’s case with the king. He said: “There is a man here whom Felix left as a prisoner.(Q) 15 When I went to Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews brought charges against him(R) and asked that he be condemned.

16 “I told them that it is not the Roman custom to hand over anyone before they have faced their accusers and have had an opportunity to defend themselves against the charges.(S) 17 When they came here with me, I did not delay the case, but convened the court the next day and ordered the man to be brought in.(T) 18 When his accusers got up to speak, they did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected. 19 Instead, they had some points of dispute(U) with him about their own religion(V) and about a dead man named Jesus who Paul claimed was alive. 20 I was at a loss how to investigate such matters; so I asked if he would be willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial there on these charges.(W) 21 But when Paul made his appeal to be held over for the Emperor’s decision, I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar.”(X)

22 Then Agrippa said to Festus, “I would like to hear this man myself.”

He replied, “Tomorrow you will hear him.”(Y)

Paul Before Agrippa(Z)

23 The next day Agrippa and Bernice(AA) came with great pomp and entered the audience room with the high-ranking military officers and the prominent men of the city. At the command of Festus, Paul was brought in. 24 Festus said: “King Agrippa, and all who are present with us, you see this man! The whole Jewish community(AB) has petitioned me about him in Jerusalem and here in Caesarea, shouting that he ought not to live any longer.(AC) 25 I found he had done nothing deserving of death,(AD) but because he made his appeal to the Emperor(AE) I decided to send him to Rome. 26 But I have nothing definite to write to His Majesty about him. Therefore I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that as a result of this investigation I may have something to write. 27 For I think it is unreasonable to send a prisoner on to Rome without specifying the charges against him.”
