²⁹ So those who were about ^(A)to examine him withdrew from him immediately, and the tribune also ^(B)was afraid, ^(C)for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that ^(D)he had bound him.

³³ Then the tribune came up and arrested him and ordered him ^(A)to be bound ^(B)with two chains. He inquired who he was and what he had done.

²⁴ the tribune ordered him to be brought into ^(A)the barracks, saying that he should be ^(B)examined by flogging, to find out why they were shouting against him like this. ²⁵ But when they had stretched him out for the whips,^[a] Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to flog ^(C)a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?” ²⁶ When the centurion heard this, he went to the tribune and said to him, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.”

^35 (A)Women received back their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life.

³⁸ The police reported these words to the magistrates, and ^(A)they were afraid when they heard that they were Roman citizens. ³⁹ So they came and apologized to them. And they took them out and ^(B)asked them to leave the city.
