²⁴ the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined under scourging, so that he might know why they shouted so against him.

¹⁰ Now when there arose a great dissension, the commander, fearing lest Paul might be pulled to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the barracks.

³⁴ And some among the multitude cried one thing and some another.

So when he could not ascertain the truth because of the tumult, he commanded him to be taken into the barracks.

³¹ Now as they were ^(A)seeking to kill him, news came to the commander of the ^[a]garrison that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. ^32 (B)He immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them. And when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus^(A)

19 So then ^(B)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.

^35 (A)Women received their dead raised to life again.

Others were ^(B)tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.

²⁵ And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, ^(A)“Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?”

²⁶ When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, “Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman.”

²⁷ Then the commander came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?”

He said, “Yes.”

²⁸ The commander answered, “With a large sum I obtained this citizenship.”

And Paul said, “But I was born a citizen.”

²⁹ Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

³⁷ But Paul said to them, “They have beaten us openly, uncondemned ^(A)Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.”

²² Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes ^(A)and commanded them to be beaten with rods. ²³ And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely.
