Paul in Macedonia and Greece
20 When the ·trouble stopped [uproar ended], Paul sent for the ·followers [disciples] to come to him. After he encouraged them and then told them good-bye, he left and went to Macedonia [C northern Greece; 16:9]. 2 He ·said many things to strengthen the followers [L encouraged them with many words] in the different places on his way through Macedonia. Then he ·went to [arrived in] Greece [probably Achaia (southern Greece)], 3 where he stayed for three months [C probably in Corinth; at this time he wrote his letter to the Romans]. He was ready to sail for Syria, but some of the Jews were ·planning [plotting] something against him. So Paul decided to go back through Macedonia to Syria. 4 The men who went with him were Sopater [Rom. 16:21] son of Pyrrhus, from the city of Berea [17:10–15]; Aristarchus [19:29; Col. 4:10; Philem. 24] and Secundus, from the city of Thessalonica [17:1–9]; Gaius [19:29], from Derbe [14:20–21]; Timothy [Rom. 16:21]; and Tychicus [Eph. 6:21; Col. 4:7; 2 Tim. 4:12] and Trophimus [21:29; 2 Tim. 4:20], two men from Asia [C all representatives of the Gentile churches delivering a financial gift to the church in Jerusalem]. 5 These men went on ahead and waited for us at Troas [C here begins the second “we” section in Acts, indicating that the author, Luke, has rejoined Paul (16:10–17; 20:5—21:18; 27:1—28:16)]. 6 We sailed from Philippi after the Feast of Unleavened Bread [C another name for Passover; Ex. 12:14–20]. Five days later we met them in Troas [16:8], where we stayed for seven days.
Eutychus Raised from the Dead at Troas
7 On the first day of the week [C Sunday; or perhaps Saturday night since the Jewish day began in the evening (Greeks reckoned from the morning)], we all met together to break bread [C probably a reference to the Lord’s Supper; Luke 22:14–20], and Paul ·spoke to [or was having a discussion with] the group. Because he was planning to leave the next day, he kept on talking until midnight. 8 We were all together in a room upstairs, and there were many lamps in the room [C using up oxygen and causing drowsiness]. 9 A young man named Eutychus was sitting in the window. As Paul continued talking, Eutychus was falling into a deep sleep. Finally, he went sound asleep and fell to the ground from the third floor. When they picked him up, he was dead. 10 Paul went down to Eutychus, ·knelt down [or threw himself on him; C like Elisha; 2 Kin. 4:32–35], and ·put his arms around [embraced] him. He said, “Don’t ·worry [fear]. ·He is alive now [L For his life/soul is in him].” 11 Then Paul went upstairs again, broke bread, and ate. He spoke to them a long time, until ·it was early morning [dawn], and then he left. 12 They took the young man home alive and were ·greatly [L not in a small measure] comforted.
The Trip from Troas to Miletus
13 We went on ahead of Paul and sailed for the city of Assos [C on the east coast of the Aegean in the Gulf of Adramyttium], where we ·intended [planned] to take Paul on board. Paul ·planned [arranged] it this way because he wanted to go to Assos by land. 14 When he met us there, we took him aboard and went to Mitylene [C the main city on the island of Lesbos in the Aegean]. 15 We sailed from ·Mitylene [L there] and the next day came to a place ·near [opposite; across from] Kios [C an island five miles off the coast in the Aegean]. The following day we sailed to Samos [C another island off the coast in the Aegean], and the next day we reached Miletus [C a city on the western coast of Asia Minor]. 16 [L For] Paul had already decided ·not to stop at [L to sail past] Ephesus [18:19], because he did not want to stay too long in [C the province of] Asia [C with so many friends in Ephesus (ch. 19), a short stop would be impossible]. He was hurrying to be in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost [C one of three great Jewish festivals, celebrated 50 days after Passover], if that were possible.
The Elders from Ephesus
17 Now from Miletus [20:15] Paul sent to Ephesus [18:19; 19:1–41] and called for the elders [14:23; 1 Tim. 5:17] of the church. 18 When they came to him, he said, “You know about my life from the first day I came to Asia [18:19]. You know the way I lived all the time I was with you [19:1–41]. 19 ·Some Jewish opponents [L The Jews] ·made plans [plotted] against me, which ·troubled me very much [severely tested/tried me]. But you know I always served the Lord ·unselfishly [L with humility], and ·I often cried [in sorrowful times; L with tears]. 20 You know I preached to you and did not hold back anything that would help you. You know that I taught you in public and ·in your homes [from house to house]. 21 I ·warned [witnessed/testified to] both Jews and Greeks to ·change their lives and turn to God [repent] and believe in our Lord Jesus. 22 But now [L indeed; T behold] ·I must obey the Holy Spirit and [L bound/compelled by the Spirit, I must] go to Jerusalem. I don’t know what will happen to me there. 23 I know only that in every city the Holy Spirit ·tells [warns; testifies to] me that ·troubles and even jail [L chains and persecutions/afflictions] wait for me. 24 [L But] I don’t ·care about my own life [consider my life worth anything]. ·The most important thing [or My only goal] is that I ·complete [finish] my ·mission [task; course; L race; 2 Tim. 4:7; Heb. 12:1], the ·work [ministry; service] that ·the Lord Jesus gave me [L I received from the Lord Jesus]—to ·tell people [testify/witness to] the ·Good News [Gospel] about God’s grace.
25 “And now [L look; T behold], I know that none of you among whom I was ·preaching [proclaiming] the ·kingdom of God [L kingdom] will ever see ·me [L my face] again. 26 So today I ·tell [testify/witness to] you that ·if any of you should be lost, I am not responsible [L I am innocent/clean of the blood of everyone; Ezek. 33:9], 27 because I ·have told [L have not held back from telling] you ·everything God wants you to know [or the whole purpose/plan/will of God]. 28 ·Be careful for [Keep watch over] yourselves and for all the ·people [L flock] the Holy Spirit has ·given to you to oversee [L made you overseers/guardians; John 21:16]. You must be like shepherds to the church of God,[a] which he ·bought [or obtained] with the ·death of his own Son [L with the blood of his own (Son); or with his own blood]. 29 I know that after ·I leave [my departure; I am gone], ·some people will come like wild wolves [L wild/savage wolves will come in among you] and ·try to destroy [will not spare] the flock. 30 ·Also, [or Even] some from your own group will rise up and ·twist the truth [L speak perversions/distortions] and will ·lead away [lure; entice] ·followers [disciples] after them. 31 So ·be careful [keep watch]! Always remember that for three years, day and night, I never stopped warning [admonishing; instructing] each of you, ·and I often cried over you [L with tears].
32 “Now I ·am putting you in the care of [commend/commit/entrust you to] God and the ·message [word] about his grace. It is able to ·give you strength [edify you; build you up], and it will give you the ·blessings God has [L inheritance] ·for [or among] all ·his holy people [those who are sanctified; those set apart for himself]. 33 When I was with you, I never ·wanted [coveted] anyone’s ·money [L silver or gold] or fine clothes [Ex. 20:17; Deut. 5:21; 1 Sam. 12:3]. 34 You [L yourselves] know I always worked [L with my own hands] to take care of my own needs and the needs of those who were with me. 35 I ·showed [provided an example to] you ·in all things [in everything I did] that you should work as I did and help the weak. I taught you to remember the words Jesus said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive [C a saying of Jesus not recorded elsewhere in Scripture].’”
36 ·When [After] Paul had said this, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.

20 Lorsque le tumulte eut cessé, Paul fit venir les disciples [et les encouragea], puis il prit congé d'eux et partit pour la Macédoine. 2 Il parcourut cette région en adressant de nombreuses paroles d'encouragement aux croyants et se rendit en Grèce 3 où il séjourna trois mois. Il était sur le point d'embarquer pour la Syrie, mais comme les Juifs formaient un complot contre lui, il décida de repartir par la Macédoine. 4 Il avait pour l'accompagner [jusqu'en Asie] Sopater de Bérée, [fils de Pyrrhus,] Aristarque et Secundus de Thessalonique, Gaïus de Derbe, Timothée, ainsi que Tychique et Trophime, originaires d'Asie. 5 Ceux-ci prirent les devants et nous attendirent à Troas.
6 De notre côté, après la fête des pains sans levain, nous avons embarqué à Philippes et, au bout de 5 jours, nous les avons rejoints à Troas où nous avons passé 7 jours.
7 Le dimanche, nous étions réunis pour rompre le pain. Comme il devait partir le lendemain, Paul s'entretenait avec les disciples, et il a prolongé son discours jusqu'à minuit. 8 Il y avait beaucoup de lampes dans la chambre à l'étage où nous étions rassemblés. 9 Or, un jeune homme du nom d'Eutychus était assis sur le bord de la fenêtre. Il s'est profondément endormi pendant le long discours de Paul et, entraîné par le sommeil, il est tombé du troisième étage. Quand on a cherché à le relever, il était mort. 10 Mais Paul est descendu, s’est penché sur lui et l’a pris dans ses bras en disant: «Ne vous inquiétez pas, car son âme est en lui.» 11 Ensuite il est remonté, a rompu le pain et a mangé. Il a poursuivi ses entretiens jusqu'à l'aube, puis il est parti. 12 Le jeune homme a été ramené vivant, à leur grande consolation.
13 Quant à nous, nous avons pris les devants pour embarquer sur un bateau à destination d’Assos. Nous devions y reprendre Paul, conformément à ses instructions, car il voulait faire la route à pied. 14 Lorsqu'il nous a rejoints à Assos, nous l'avons pris à bord et sommes allés à Mytilène. 15 De là, continuant par la mer, nous sommes arrivés le lendemain en face de Chios. Le jour suivant nous sommes passés par Samos, et le jour d'après nous sommes arrivés à Milet.
Paul et les anciens d’Ephèse
16 Paul avait décidé de passer au large d'Ephèse sans s'y arrêter afin de ne pas perdre de temps en Asie; il se dépêchait en effet pour être, si possible, le jour de la Pentecôte à Jérusalem. 17 Cependant, de Milet, il a envoyé chercher à Ephèse les anciens de l'Eglise. 18 Lorsqu'ils sont arrivés vers lui, il leur a dit:
«Vous savez de quelle manière je me suis toujours comporté avec vous, depuis le jour où j’ai mis le pied en Asie: 19 j'ai servi le Seigneur en toute humilité, avec [beaucoup de] larmes et au milieu des épreuves que provoquaient pour moi les complots des Juifs. 20 Vous savez que, sans rien cacher, je vous ai annoncé et enseigné tout ce qui vous était utile, en public et dans les maisons, 21 en appelant les Juifs et les non-Juifs à changer d’attitude en se tournant vers Dieu et à croire en notre Seigneur Jésus[-Christ].
22 »Et maintenant, voici que, lié par l'Esprit, je vais à Jérusalem sans savoir ce qui m'y arrivera. 23 Je sais seulement que, de ville en ville, l'Esprit saint m'avertit que des liens et des souffrances m'attendent. 24 Mais je n’y attache aucune importance et je ne considère pas ma vie comme précieuse, pourvu que j'accomplisse [avec joie] ma course et le ministère que le Seigneur Jésus m'a confié: annoncer la bonne nouvelle de la grâce de Dieu.
25 »Désormais, je le sais, vous ne verrez plus mon visage, vous tous au milieu de qui j'ai passé en prêchant le royaume [de Dieu]. 26 C'est pourquoi je vous déclare aujourd'hui que je suis pur du sang de vous tous, 27 car je vous ai annoncé tout le plan de Dieu sans rien en cacher. 28 Faites donc bien attention à vous-mêmes et à tout le troupeau dont le Saint-Esprit vous a confié la responsabilité; prenez soin de l'Eglise de Dieu qu'il s'est acquise par son propre sang. 29 Je sais qu'après mon départ des loups cruels s'introduiront parmi vous, et ils n'épargneront pas le troupeau; 30 de vos propres rangs surgiront des hommes qui donneront des enseignements pervertis pour entraîner les disciples à leur suite. 31 Restez donc vigilants et souvenez-vous que durant 3 ans, nuit et jour, je n'ai pas cessé d'avertir avec larmes chacun de vous.
32 »Et maintenant, [frères,] je vous confie à Dieu et au message de sa grâce, lui qui a le pouvoir d'édifier et de [vous] donner un héritage avec tous les saints. 33 Je n'ai désiré ni l'argent, ni l'or, ni les habits de personne. 34 Vous le savez vous-mêmes, les mains que voici ont pourvu à mes besoins et à ceux de mes compagnons. 35 En tout, je vous ai montré qu'il faut travailler ainsi pour soutenir les faibles et se rappeler les paroles du Seigneur Jésus, puisqu’il a lui-même dit: ‘Il y a plus de bonheur à donner qu'à recevoir.’»
36 Après avoir dit cela, il s’est mis à genoux et a prié avec eux tous. 37 Tous ont alors fondu en larmes; ils se jetaient au cou de Paul et l'embrassaient, 38 attristés surtout parce qu'il avait dit qu'ils ne verraient plus son visage. Puis ils l'ont accompagné jusqu'au bateau.

Ministering at Troas
7 Now on (L)the first day of the week, when the disciples came together (M)to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. 8 There were many lamps (N)in the upper room where [a]they were gathered together. 9 And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. 10 But Paul went down, (O)fell on him, and embracing him said, (P)“Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.” 11 Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed. 12 And they brought the young man in alive, and they were not a little comforted.
From Troas to Miletus
13 Then we went ahead to the ship and sailed to Assos, there intending to take Paul on board; for so he had [b]given orders, intending himself to go on foot. 14 And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene. 15 We sailed from there, and the next day came opposite Chios. The following day we arrived at Samos and stayed at Trogyllium. The next day we came to Miletus. 16 For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he would not have to spend time in Asia; for (Q)he was hurrying (R)to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on (S)the Day of Pentecost.
The Ephesian Elders Exhorted
17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. 18 And when they had come to him, he said to them: “You know, (T)from the first day that I came to Asia, in what manner I always lived among you, 19 serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and trials which happened to me (U)by the plotting of the Jews; 20 how (V)I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house, 21 (W)testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, (X)repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And see, now (Y)I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, 23 except that (Z)the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. 24 [c]But (AA)none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, (AB)so that I may finish my [d]race with joy, (AC)and the ministry (AD)which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

20 After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples, took leave of them, and departed to go into Macedonia. 2 When he had gone through those parts and had encouraged them with many words, he came into Greece. 3 When he had spent three months there, and a plot was made against him by Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he determined to return through Macedonia. 4 These accompanied him as far as Asia: Sopater of Beroea, Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, Gaius of Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. 5 But these had gone ahead, and were waiting for us at Troas. 6 We sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at Troas in five days, where we stayed seven days.

17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to himself the elders of the assembly. 18 When they had come to him, he said to them, “You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you all the time, 19 serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears, and with trials which happened to me by the plots of the Jews; 20 how I didn’t shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, teaching you publicly and from house to house, 21 testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus.[b] 22 Now, behold, I go bound by the Spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there; 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions wait for me. 24 But these things don’t count; nor do I hold my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to fully testify to the Good News of the grace of God.
25 “Now, behold, I know that you all, among whom I went about preaching God’s Kingdom, will see my face no more. 26 Therefore I testify to you today that I am clean from the blood of all men, 27 for I didn’t shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28 Take heed, therefore, to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and[c] God which he purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know that after my departure, vicious wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Men will arise from among your own selves, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 Therefore watch, remembering that for a period of three years I didn’t cease to admonish everyone night and day with tears. 32 Now, brothers,[d] I entrust you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I coveted no one’s silver, gold, or clothing. 34 You yourselves know that these hands served my necessities, and those who were with me. 35 In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
