⁴⁵ they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds^[a] to all, as any had need.

¹⁷ How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?^(A)

¹⁸ They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share,^{(A) 19} thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.

Faith without Works Is Dead

¹⁴ What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Surely that faith cannot save, can it?^{(A) 15} If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food^{(B) 16} and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that?

³⁴ There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold.^{(A) 35} They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.^{(B) 36} There was a Levite from Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”). ³⁷ He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.^(C)

Ananias and Sapphira

5 But a man named Ananias, with the consent of his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property; ² with his wife’s knowledge, he kept back some of the proceeds and brought only a part and laid it at the apostles’ feet.^(D)

²² When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money^[a] to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”^(A)

⁹ As it is written,

²⁹ The disciples determined that, according to their ability, each would send relief to the brothers and sisters living in Judea;^(A)

³³ Sell your possessions and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.^{(A) 34} For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.^(B)
