The Coming of the Holy Spirit

When (A)the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like (B)a mighty rushing wind, and (C)it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues (D)as of fire appeared to them and rested[a] on each one of them. And they were all (E)filled with the Holy Spirit and began (F)to speak in other tongues (G)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And (H)at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And (I)they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking (J)Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and (K)Medes and (L)Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and (M)proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”

24 O Lord, how manifold are your works!
    In (A)wisdom have you made them all;
    the earth is full of your creatures.
25 Here is the sea, great and wide,
    (B)which teems with creatures innumerable,
    living things both small and great.
26 There go the ships,
    and (C)Leviathan, which you formed to (D)play in it.[a]

27 These (E)all look to you,
    to (F)give them their food in due season.
28 When you give it to them, they gather it up;
    when you (G)open your hand, they are filled with good things.
29 When you (H)hide your face, they are (I)dismayed;
    when you (J)take away their breath, they die
    and (K)return to their dust.
30 When you (L)send forth your Spirit,[b] they are created,
    and you (M)renew the face of the ground.

31 May the glory of the Lord (N)endure forever;
    may the Lord (O)rejoice in his works,
32 who looks on the earth and it (P)trembles,
    who (Q)touches the mountains and they smoke!
33 I will sing to the Lord (R)as long as I live;
    I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
34 May my (S)meditation be pleasing to him,
    for I rejoice in the Lord.
35 Let (T)sinners be consumed from the earth,
    and let the wicked be no more!
(U)Bless the Lord, O my soul!
(V)Praise the Lord!

Now (A)there are varieties of gifts, but (B)the same Spirit; and (C)there are varieties of service, but (D)the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is (E)the same God who empowers them all in everyone. (F)To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of (G)wisdom, and to another the utterance of (H)knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another (I)faith by the same Spirit, to another (J)gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another (K)the working of miracles, to another (L)prophecy, to another (M)the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another (N)various kinds of tongues, to another (O)the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, (P)who apportions to each one individually (Q)as he wills.

One Body with Many Members

12 For just as (R)the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, (S)so it is with Christ. 13 For (T)in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—(U)Jews or Greeks, slaves[a] or free—and (V)all were made to drink of one Spirit.

  1. 1 Corinthians 12:13 For the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface

(A)Philip said to him, “Lord, (B)show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? (C)Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that (D)I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you (E)I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that (F)I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else (G)believe on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, (H)whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I (I)am going to the Father. 13 (J)Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that (K)the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 (L)If you ask me[a] anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 (M)“If you love me, you will (N)keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another (O)Helper,[b] to be with you forever, 17 even (P)the Spirit of truth, (Q)whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and (R)will be[c] in you.
