^32 (A)Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.

^34 (A)Some in the crowd were shouting one thing, some another. And as he could not learn the facts because of the uproar, he ordered him to be brought into ^(B)the barracks.

⁴⁰ For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.”

²⁹ So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and ^(A)Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's ^(B)companions in travel.

²⁴ When John's messengers had gone, Jesus^[a] began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out ^(A)into the wilderness to see? ^(B)A reed shaken by the wind? ²⁵ What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings' courts. ²⁶ What then did you go out to see? ^(C)A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

⁷ As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out ^(A)into the wilderness to see? ^(B)A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸ What then did you go out to see? A man^[a] dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. ⁹ What then did you go out to see? ^(C)A prophet?^[b] Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
