² He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

³⁹ Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive, for as yet there was no Spirit^[a] because Jesus was not yet glorified.^(A)

⁵ Well then, does God^[a] supply you with the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law or by your believing what you heard?

Spiritual Gifts

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts,^[a] brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be ignorant.^{(A) 2} You know that when you were gentiles you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak.^{(B) 3} Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Let Jesus be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.^(C)

⁴ Now there are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit,^{(D) 5} and there are varieties of services but the same Lord,^{(E) 6} and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. ⁷ To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.^{(F) 8} To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,^{(G) 9} to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,^{(H) 10} to another the working of powerful deeds, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.^{(I) 11} All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.^(J)

¹⁹ Or do you not know that your body is a temple^[a] of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?^(A)

¹¹ For I long to see you so that I may share with you some spiritual gift so that you may be strengthened—

⁵ On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

¹⁵ And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning.^{(A) 16} And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’^{(B) 17} If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?”^(C)

Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit

⁴⁴ While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word.^(A)

¹⁵ The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit^{(A) 16} (for as yet the Spirit had not come^[a] upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus).^{(B) 17} Then Peter and John^[b] laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.^(C)
