¹⁹ And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.

⁸ But Elymas the ^(A)magician (for that is the meaning of his name) ^(B)opposed them, seeking to turn ^(C)the proconsul away from the faith.

²⁵ The carved images of their gods ^(A)you shall burn with fire. You ^(B)shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them or take it for yourselves, lest you be ^(C)ensnared by it, for it is an abomination to the Lord your God. ²⁶ And you shall not bring an abominable thing into your house and become devoted to destruction^[a] like it. You shall utterly detest and abhor it, ^(D)for it is devoted to destruction.

²⁰ He took the calf that they had made and burned it with fire and ground it to powder and scattered it on the water and made the people of Israel drink it.

⁴ So they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that they had, and the rings that were in their ears. Jacob hid them under ^(A)the terebinth tree that was near Shechem.

⁶ When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain ^(A)magician, ^(B)a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.

Simon the Magician Believes

⁹ But there was a man named Simon, ^(A)who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, ^(B)saying that he himself was somebody great. ¹⁰ They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, ^(C)“This man is the power of God that is called ^(D)Great.” ¹¹ And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had ^(E)amazed them with his magic.

² Then the king commanded that ^(A)the magicians, ^(B)the enchanters, the ^(C)sorcerers, and ^(D)the Chaldeans be summoned to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and ^(E)stood before the king.
